It doesn't just happen on property taxes. I've had errors and clients have had errors on federal tax returns where IRS demand a higher tax claiming (fill in the blank). Some people will just pay it because they are afraid of the IRS but the bill should never be automatically paid. Sometimes a small error is made on a return that might cause this but if that is not the case (and it should not be assumed that it is) the notice should be fought with the proper documentation proving you are correct. Surprisingly, the IRS is more flexible than this tax collector ended up being. If you can prove your point with the IRS will find in your favor without getting the press involved.

I was going to disagree. I think you are correct. The camere in his face that day didnt scare him... he said multiple ridiculous statements that the town would have to back up. I think the town watched the story on tv and forced the incompetent assessor to act properly. A lawyer, town manager, or small claims court could easily stop the action. Wonder why he didnt fight back using one of those avenues? I guess he got his vindication by using the reporter after sending the money. Personally I would take this as a personal assault. And I am a quiet man.
@nickeldime67134 жыл бұрын
@@rogerwhiting9310 sadly fighting the city is no easy task even if you hire a lawyer, not to mention the fact that taking it to court could take years before it is resolved, mean while despite saying they were going to stop they proceeded to put a lean on the guy's house and threaten to take it away. They did mention something about legal action so he may have been using a lawyer, but it wasn't changing anything and going far to slow. He likely didn't care to be out of the street once the court date finally came about. Personally I might still go to court, I feel like the city owes him a lot more than a simple oops we won't take your money now. Threatening letters and feeling like your house is going to be taken away is not an easy thing to deal with, and it was all due to mistakes entirely on the city. Could almost argue extortion because they pressured him to pay money that he didn't actually owe what so ever. It would have been a complete nightmare for the guy.
@Alexlfm4 жыл бұрын
Roger Whiting Well the title insurance that comes with his loan would of insured against just such a situation so why should he have to put up his own money for a lawyer when the tax office is the one that screwed up. When we built our house, we had the water bill changed to our name after taking possession of it. The water company didn’t send anyone out to read the meter, so they billed us for the entire month even though we had only been here for 4 days. I called them to correct it and was told I had to pay for the whole month and I was responsible to collect the excess money from the builder. I did the math and told them I would only pay for 4 days and THEY can collect the difference from the builder since they were at fault for not reading the meter as soon as I claimed the property with them. She refused saying they would shut off our water if I didn’t pay. So I asked her where should I send MY bill to. If I have to do YOUR job for you, I expect to be paid $25 an hour with a minimum of 8 hours per day. She paused, then said she would send me a new bill for the 4 days of usage. Medicare has high patient satisfaction because patients are insulated from the costs and the system (tax payers) soaks up the waste and inflation. Private insurance does the same thing primarily because it has to operate under the same regulations as Medicare and they have rigged the game to have oligopolistic control. That is why costs are so high in the US, not because insurance companies are predatory. In a free market insurance system, both providers and insurers would have to compete on price and thus be incentivized to reduce costs. its that logic that costs tax payers millions in lawsuits when its the officials that were guilty. Lawsuit culture is a huge part of tax expenditures, taking money out of our schools to reward someone who was slighted in some way. @swskitso4 жыл бұрын
@ my solution is the officials should be the ones doing the compensating not the tax payers. Besides that most often those seeking compensation often seek unreasonable amounts for what in the long run was an inconvenience. These lawsuits often take millions of tax payer dollars away from schools when its the actions of officials that are the cause while the tax payers have absolutely no involvement other than to pay for the compensation. An honest man would see compensation as repayment of any costs and the firing of those involved rather than seek thousands or millions of tax payer dollars he is in no way entitled to.

That's ridiculous. Once, when I moved into a new place the local Cable Company wouldn't initially establish service because the last resident owed them money. Fortunately, they were semi-reasonable and told me I had to bring my lease down to the office to show I was a new resident and not the person who owed them money which I did and they established service after that. Demanding that the new resident get the money owed by the last is absurd and should be illegal.

@@lq7777 It probably is an unenforceable request, but most people don't know their rights, so they end up paying just to make the problem go away.

Property tax is immoral in the first place, it shouldn't even be a thing. Abolish property tax and this would not be an issue. We out number them....How about everyone that has purchased a home just refuse to pay the property tax all at the same time? If they send men with guns (police) to evict us....we fight back with deadly force....Shelter is a necessity! The Government has no right to put a forever lien on our homes.

mark marchiafava Reagan is interesting, because while he said that... he also paved the way to remove the second amendment, and wanted to take guns away, and did!

Good old Ronnie RAYGUN, the 'trickle down' President who hated Medicare and unions and who said he "couldn't remember" 88 times when questioned about Iran-Contra. Yeah, he was a real freakin gem, he was.

"Stay the course. Stay well-documented." Excellent advice. Hold onto all of these types of important documents and keep them well-organized. Most of the time it can get you out of a bad situation like this...unless of course, you're dealing with corrupt/lazy/greedy/stupid (pick any or all) people.
