While NordVPN is generally considered one of the top VPN providers, it does have some potential drawbacks to be aware of: Performance Issues Some users have reported occasional performance problems: Intermittent disconnections, requiring manual reconnection even with auto-connect enabled Slow speeds on certain servers, necessitating trying multiple servers to find a good connection IP Address Concerns Some NordVPN IP addresses may be blocked by various online services due to abuse by malicious users There have been reports of NordVPN IPs being targeted by attacks that can potentially affect a user's real IP address Pricing and Billing Renewal prices can be significantly higher than initial promotional rates Some users have found the cancellation process to be unnecessarily complicated There are complaints about difficulties disputing bills due to third-party payment processing Past Security Incident In 2018, one of NordVPN's servers was compromised, though no user data was accessed Feature Limitations Lack of port forwarding capability No native manual WireGuard configuration options (workarounds exist for Linux) User Experience The apps' settings are designed to keep auto-renewal on by default, which some users find frustrating

As usual John Cadogan is spot on. We engineers have been pointing out this basic flaw for over a decade. It is not just a case of upgrading local powerlines, transformers and sub-stations. Once you get a few fuel stations installing EV fast chargers you then need to upgrade the high tension lines and high power transformers that feed those sub-stations - and then of course the generators themselves. Oh, and all those high capacity lines are much heavier than the current ones so you have to re-build all the transmission towers themselves. Oh, and then there's the small issue of the high-power transformers - there is currently a global shortage and a waiting list of up to 5 years to get them. Oh, and the high-power transformers come from China because Western countries stopped making them in order to look green. The EVangelists keep talking about EVs becoming more viable because battery technology is improving. Battery technology is secondary to the underlying engineering structural problem of EVs. A 100kWhr battery takes over an hour to charge using a 100kW charger. To charge the same battery in 30 minutes requires a 200kW charger. To charge in 15 minutes requires a 400kW charger. To charge in 7.5 minutes takes an 800kW charger. And to match the refuelling time of a standard Toyota Camry (i.e., 3 minutes) would require a 1.6MW charger. Scale that up to a national vehicle fleet and the entire EV model collapses into a heap without a complete rebuild of the entire generation and distribution network. Not millions of dollars, not billions of dollars but trillions of dollars and decades to achieve - if it ever happens.

@@emmett3067 Emmett - No shortage of engineers. Big shortage of money, resources and trades people. A decades long project that would sink most Western economies. In the US, the US$7.5B federal funds allocated to building thousands of EV chargers have delivered under a dozen in 3 years. Same problem as Ampol in Australia - no local power capacity; no broader grid capacity and nobody willing to invest in providing that infrastructure because consumers will not pay for it on their power bills.

This is just a soaking by corporations to get the gov't to pay all the start up fees so they can just cash in day one.
@paulhamilton8991
@paulhamilton8991 18 күн бұрын
They are not feasible 100M for 200 chargers @ 500000 each without factoring in head work costs for the electrical distribution network. Let’s say it takes 45 min to charge an EV allowing for change overs times between disconnect and reconnect that means you can charge 32 cars in 24 hrs if it is used continuously so for a 60kW charge that’s 1920kW. Imaging the charge is buying electric from the grid at 30c per kWh and marking it up 33% to 40c per kWh the charger marked 1920 x 0.1 = 192 per day so the 500000 initial construction cost takes 2604 days to pay off before turning a profit. That’s 7 years 6 weeks. That’s without any breakdowns/ supply interruptions and constant 24hr usage for over 7 years. Given charging after midnight and 6am is not really likely that actual usage would be more like 75% making the payback time before profit 9.5 years. Not feasible! Now scale up the number of required chargers. Our area has over 20 fuel stations each with an average of 15 pumps (300 pumps) and we can fill and ICE vehicle in 5min. The same EV takes 45min so for the same filling capacity we need 9x300 =2700 chargers at 500000 = 1.35billion dollars for one area population of 110000. I can 100% guarantee that network can’t handle 2700 x 150kW (405MW) of an additional load in one area. Now you can do that match’s anc scale that up for the rest of Australia! “Tell him he’s dreaming”

@@paulhamilton8991 Feasibility is tough ... at THAT price. But that price is way too high as are some estimates I've seen for some in the U.S. For a proper price ... some companies can do them for closer to $45k (US dollars). Much more plausible. Govs seem to like to pay way too much for things.

Mark Latham asked a question in the New South Wales parliament that if we waived a magic wand and stopped burning all fossil fuels today - petrol diesel coal gas - how much will that reduce the global temperature by the year 2050? The answer came back 0.0055°C And to do that on the basis of renewables we need to upgrade the entire power grid at a starting cost of about 1.5 trillion which is more than what our total GDP is worth for one year And we all know that a starting cost of 1.5 will turn into an actual cost of 3 trillion And all of that to save the planet 0.0055° C Fabulous .

Here in the UK the chargers are small, no massive transformers, but they all have the tiny problem, slow charging! But it works. The annoying thing here is they are activated by a phone app, and people have to have up to 20 different apps.😂 What happened to simplicity, park, plug in, and pay with the bank card.🙄

I used to work in Television centre for the BBC and all around the building were huge flywheel type standby PSU type systems, 7 of them as I vaguely remember but would I want one in my back yard? And at what point is the thing going to grind to a halt with such a serious start up power requirement that most grid connections would be hard pushed to spin them. The BBC had diesel standby generators as well as a gas turbine one so there was plenty of reliable pollution available on demand before the BBC moved out and became green fantasists

Why not hook each one of the chargers up to a big fuck off generator like the one in dingo piss (not sure if this is hyphenated or not) creek, paint is green I'm sure no one will notice. That fulfils the diesel part of the ANUS-power equation. So a twofer for Ampol diesel & electric I'm sure they could hit up the government for another 100 mill for the generators. Extra bonus no worries about browning out the power grid.

John, some sense at last, that scalability is the issue. The distribution network can barely cope with peak demand in summer without adding the hundreds of thousands of say 150kW chargers that would be required to replace ICE fuel stations to achieve the required throughput refuelling to keep the country moving. Keep up the good work.

Not just Electrical engineers would have seen this coming. I'm a Civil engineer and also knew something like this would happen. It was obvious as about 20 years ago, I was working in IT and a government decided to pump heaps of money into computers in schools. The only problem was that the schools just didn't have the power capacity to have all these new computers running - in other words another debacle.

Flywheel storage is actually a viable alternative for fixed energy storage. They are fairly cheap, made from basic materials (mostly steel, concrete, copper), almost fully recyclable after their 20-30 year service life. Basically unlimited cycles, from 100% to about 5% and back again, rapidly if needed. Modular, easily expanded. For safety they are best installed in concrete-lined pits in case they decide to come apart - which is only an economic problem, not a Human Safety issue. They also have the BIG advantage that they NEVER burst into toxic flames.
