I feel like I'm learning a bunch of tips and tricks watching your searches (plus it makes me feel better that it takes a bit to hone down the search to really find what you're looking for- that checks with my experience). I like your Ravelry videos. I always learn a search feature I’d never considered before. Sometimes, the free pattern isn’t a pdf, but just text and photos on a website. I hate that. I often copy, paste and edit (and edit and edit) in Word. I use Google Translate on foreign-language patterns. It is often literal, but with a little imagination, I can figure out what was intended.

Your wool looks very much like Lion Brand Homespun yarn, so searching for projects with that specific yarn would probably yield some good results as well. 19:58 i'd actually say that this is caused by picking up too few stitches at the neckline. when you pick up a small number of sts around a collar, it causes the purl stitches to stretch out like crazy as you see in this pattern, creating significant gaps between the columns of knits. look how tight the knit columns are! those knits were definitely not worked loosely. they may be twisted sts, or they may be standard knits worked at a fairly tight gauge. regardless, i believe pretty confidently that gaping is created by a small number of sts being stretched across a large-circumference neckline. however, if you wanted to change this look, it could very easily be changed by picking up a larger number of stitches!
@cloknits2 ай бұрын
Just looking at it and listening to how you talked about it, it sounds like a coiled yarn. Bouclé does have actual loops that stick out of the core strand if that makes sense. Anyway it's gorgeous and it would be amazing for a lot of the patterns that are going to be in the new 52 Weeks of Chunky Knits by Laine.

Wondering if the texture of the yarn might obscure a minimalist knit/purl type textured pattern... Swatching will tell! But if that's the case, perhaps something like Braided Embers (several reddish versions in the projects) or Yeti Pull (maybe doing a larger size if you want more ease) would work. Maybe not what you were looking for specifically, but I think the Bi-Color Snuggle Sweater would look great using two colors of your new yarn.

Hi Taylor, I actually have a ton of patterns available in only Norwegian after living in Norway for a year, and I will say as an American that Norwegian patterns can actually be hard to translate as they don't use the same terminology and the patterns are often a little less detailed. I struggle to work through them as someone who speaks the language, and discovered the google translate really struggles to translate the norwegian knitting abreviations. It sucks because the Rauma Garn sweater was super cute! Anyway, that's been my experience, and I figured it was pretty applicable to your question! 36:24 36:26 36:28

I recently translated from Dutch into English a vest pattern that only came in Dutch. I used Google translate. It took a few minutes, but it was not hard. There were a couple of places where having some knitting experience helped me figure out some phrases that were different, but I’ve almost completed the vest, and I’m very happy with it. I would recommend trying the translation if that’s the pattern you love.

Hi, Missus Earl. I knitted an infinity scarf with curly yarn, with a diagonal striped texture. A word of warning, the curliness IS your texture. My scarf is gorgeous, but you cannot see the diagonal pattern I labored over for a year and a half. It became even less noticeable after washing. Mine was acrylic and it got a fuzzy halo, which obscured the rest of the pattern. You can only see it if you are looking for it at an angle. As for hats, I really enjoyed making the Urchin beret with bulky yarn. One version of the hat even uses irregularly weighted yarn and looks so classy.

The Franky genser/sweater is a pattern by Sandnes Design in their pattern book Mykt Til Dame Sandnes 2202 - this was released in 2022 and is a very popular pattern book so tends to be out of stock.. I love their patterns and you're able to get about 10 good patterns per book. You can get them from a stockists like Knitt(UK), Mother knitter, Garntopia, etc - be sure to pick the English/German version. Sandnes Garn normally requires you buy a quantity of the yarn for the book, but you can get a sock quantity or some vendors don't enforce this. If you can get a copy, it's so worth it. They also released that pattern in various sizes in Sandnes Garn 2209 FRANKY ALL SIZE SWEATER book.

I loved the look of All Star Kitty Cat by Hollie Soave in the photo, but do not like the bulky fabric. I don't swatch often so I started and frogget it, because it looks odd to me, will be difficult to carry at laundry, and the finished sweater will be voluminous. Winter requires multiple layers, so I can't carry a massive sweater on my back in addition to a heavy jacket. With some recalculation now I'm making it with way thinner yarn, I just can't stand sensorily this trend.

Sandnes Garn is my local yarn mill. At least in Norway we can only buy their patterns/booklets/cataloges if you buy at least 4 skeins of yarn, and the yarn must be one that is used in one of the patterns, or one of their specificly suggested alternatives (if you want superwash merino instead of rustic norwegian wool for instance). That's the rule at their mill, at retailers, and in their online store... it sucks, since their yarn is pretty expensive...🤷♀️

What if you knit the patterns you like, but without using mohair? I would also set the “yarn held together” filter to single strand only, and that might help!

Probably because the mohair is seen as optional for a lot of designers, so they'll say that it's not necessarily part of the pattern.
@jdubbs5282 ай бұрын
@@katiecaparco one problem with that is it can really change the gauge you reach by essentially working with a smaller yarn. I’ve tried “doing the math” but I don’t want to have to rework an entire pattern of cables or recalculate the stitch amounts just to make a design without mohair.

Warning…dumb question alert! First I know WHAT Swatch is, but when a pattern says make a swatch as you said what do you do? How many stitches? How many rows? Give me all the info. Thanks!
@heathers88262 ай бұрын
Most swatches are measured in 4x4-inch squares. I have been told to make a 5x5 inch square so it's easier to measure your swatch with a ruler. You'll want to count how many stitches are in that 4x4 section to see if you meet gauge according to the pattern. If gauge isn't met you can move up or down a needle size to get close. Not everyone meets gauge, but you're doing fine if you can get close.

@@heathers8826 thank you. I see it on patterns which says how many stitches your swatch should be but I never understand how big the swatch should be to begin with

I have translated patterns to English before. If you search for knitting terms translations and you will find lists of terms in different languages.

Pretty certain that yarn is a spiral ply, not bouclé!
@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS2 ай бұрын
It certainly seems more like that! I’ve never heard of a spiral ply before. Very cool!

Bouclé is going to hide stitch definition. Textured stitch patterns will be lost in it. Frogging that yarn would also be a nightmare. Your best bet is to find a yarn with a very similar texture and weight. Then look at the projects made with that yarn on ravelry.

I have a book knitting languages by Margaret Heathman it helps you translate patterns in many different languages might help.

I looked through the comments for the Franky sweater, and apparently, you have to purchase both a pattern book and a sweater's quantity of yarn to get this pattern. 😕

That's what I'm realizing. 😕

I wouldnt knit a textured stitch sweater with boucle yarn, just because those two tectures might clash and you dont get the full potential of boucle yarn.

I think you’re absolutely right. One would diminish the other. Thank you!

Hi Tayler, I have an English version of the Franky Genser pattern from the Sandnes Garn booklet that I’d be happy to email you photos of! I know the booklets are super hard to get in the US 🥲
