From Deb in North Carolina…I’m an avid knitter and watercolor artist, who has taught color theory. From what you have there in yarn for your husband’s sweater, you should trust your instincts. On my iPad, your couch looks navy with mustardy pillows. You seem to already go for that combination. Lay your swatch on the couch and back way up, even leave the room for a bit. Looking again, you’ll get a better idea of the color ratios you’ve chosen for the sweater. Your accent colors will pop on the main color field. You said your main yarn is a bluey purple. On the color wheel, yellow is opposite purple. So this is why your main color so nicely pops the mustardy color, just as you have with your couch/ pillows. Also, painters love to lay in a warm color ( mustard) next to a cool color ( bluey/ purple) so that the colors punch. So your first instinct of color choice is technically what I consider the best when I paint or knit. Give yourself a pat on the back and get knitting.

Wòw Deb , great suggestion . I always have a hard time deciding colors , my choices are the same ones all the time . Going to pull out an old color wheel and start a new look at yarn colors. 👍 😊

This is such a great suggestion Walter! Thank you so much. I will do just what you said because I think I just need to remind myself that the complimentary nature of these colors will pay off nicely when there's more of the MC to compliment. Honestly, great advice. Thank you!

When it comes to my crafts my motto is to always do what makes me happy and brings me joy in the moment, so I think if working on the beautiful sweater Gladys is wearing brings you some joy and peace, go for it! Your Frankensweater will be there when you are ready to tackle it. I love watching your podcast and seeing what you are working on. I hope you have a great week!

I was a kid in the 70's & absolutely adored 2 things from the odd fashion of that era, the clogs and capes. I am now in my early 50s & still LOVE clogs & capes (now capes, capelets & swonchois), but living in a colder climate & age not being as appreciative of it, I am now selfishly knitting your mittens patter so I can enjoy wearing my newly finished swoncho and cape. Coziness, thy name is Fire Pit mittens! Thanks T!

Taylor those Kroy socks are gorgeous!!! I just went to Michaels and got 4 skeins on sale. What a win! I just watched a tutorial by Suzanne Bryan on KZbin, it's very good step by step how to do the Boomerang Heel. I think you're right to fix the Frankensweater, you know you don't like it as it is, it sucks to have to rip it back, but in the end you'll be really glad you did. I have a sweater that I keep having to take it out and do it again, but I want it to be right, it's too much time and money. I want to really like it.

I'm so glad you mentioned your newsletter, I had to confirm my email!! Loved this episode, really feels like we're just having coffee and a knit chat ❤️ I'm going to have to go back to NM in the early spring I think, as I have to sell my Mom's house. And there's a second skien of yarn I packed somewhere, that belongs in a sweater I'm making, and weirdly, I have to rent a moving truck and drive family heirlooms across the country back with me to NJ of all things... Quite a year it will be. It always surprises me how NM and the Southwest have become like a second home to me, in a way, since my folks are retired there some 17 years ago. ❤️ 🌶️ 🌵

The sweater colors are amazing, beautiful! It will look different when the accent colors are in the ratio of the design. And I agree with walter/Deb About the couch and pillows 😆 you are vibing those colors in your backdrop! Maybe it’s a bit more purple than expected but it matches the particular yellow nicely.

As a former boomerang heel knitter, I really encourage you to look into the Shadow Wrap Heel. IMHO it is far more comfortable and it's way easier to do. It also allows you to do a contrasting colour on the heel, if you wish, which the boomerang heel doesn't really allow for. (And Denise of Earth Tones Girl has the best tutorial. Who wouldn't want to listen to her soothing voice explaining something?)

Color selection can be so challenging. I agree that using the color wheel can help locate complementary colors. Depending on how much blue vs. purple, the compliment may be more orange or red vs yellow. But it is not an exact science, for sure, it is what you find appealing. I will often look for projects on Ravelry that have a similar number of colors and see what stands out well. Another good source are the old lopi pattern books as they often used color so well. Another idea is asking the yarn provider for some suggestions since it is so hard to tell on a monitor. Your colors are really beautiful and it is a wonderful yarn and pattern!

the timing of this is so funny, I just got to the point where I'm confident enough with socks to start exploring other heels and toes! I was also impatiently waiting for my circular needle set to arrive so I could get back to my sweater lol, so I distracted myself by teaching myself a new sock toe AND figuring out how to translate the circular pattern to DPNs (I'm really proud of that part!!)

When I take a break from a project, it is usually because I need to make a decision and I don't really like any of my choices. I need time and space to contemplate my options, see if I come up with any new solutions and eventually I'll circle back around and do the hard work, whatever it is. If you want to finish the project you will, don't stress about taking a break.

Another lovely catch up☺️. Good to hear that your family is well. Your partner has given you the “go” to knit the sweater with the chosen colours and the swatch which verified his satisfaction….👍he’s the one who will be wearing it😉… Cast On👍. Wise choice to give your frankensweater an itty bitty break and redoing the bottom will be the icing on the cake. I too have knit the versal and am very pleased with the fit…the shoulder construction is awesome. I’m a 2 at a time toe up sock knitter, and geesh, I’ve not heard about the boomerang heel. How interesting🤔. Sooo pleased that you enjoy and encourage engagement in the comments! If any other viewers read this, may I encourage them to “Like” and Subscribe to your channel !! I like the colours you've chosen for your hubby's sweater. As you pointed out, the swatch is mostly the 2 minor colours and the plum is just along the border. Try looking at the swatch with several of the plum skeins surrounding it to make the ratio more in line with the final piece. Those fingerless mitts are tempting. That may become 2023 Christmas presents. I love a good palate cleanser. Right now I'm crocheting an easy blanket which will take me less than a week to complete.

If you have an easier time learning from video tutorials Norman from Nimble Needles on KZbin has a fantastic video on this technique! I just showed your fire pit mits to my partner ( who is notorious for hating gloves, hats, scarves and sweaters lol) and he actually said he would like a pair so he can eat while outside on his breaks in the winter. Hi Tayler, glad your son and rest of family are all well! You have motivated me to go back and make modifications to my theoretically finished Love Note sweater I "finished" last year. I'm not loving the cropped length and am just going to tink back the ribbing and knit on a few more inches. It was my first adult sweater and I want to love it. Thank you for the motivation!! Also, I love the colors of the sweater you're knitting for your husband. That dark plum/navy is calling to me. I have the Cambridge Jacket by Ann Budd in my queue to knit for my son who is heading off to college in the fall and I think that color would be wonderful.

That heel sounded really familiar after you mentioned knitting all the way around in between the two halves of the heel. I believe that's the same heel that Norman (NimbleNeedles, or NimbleNeedlez?? Personally, I love the colour choices for the Atlas sweater. I think it will look really cool. Also love the Versal sweater colour choice. Definitely would work on that for a while before finishing the Frankensweater. Again, personally if something bugs me on a project I will redo it. Spending time and energy on any given project warrants the time spent to fix it, especially if it isn't a whole lot that needs to be frogged and redone. Always worth the time if you end up liking and wearing it.

I think your husband’s sweater will be stunning! Also, I can empathize with you about putting your Frankensweater aside for a bit. I’m making the Granny Apple cardi for my daughter, and it’s been in timeout for several months because when knitting the left and right front pieces at the same time and after several increases I had the number of stitches I should have cast on (!). A few days ago I took the yearn out, cast on, and now I’m forty rows into both pieces. Sometimes a timeout is the answer to a problem.

I think once you have the whole sweater in the blue/plum color, the grey and yellowish color will show up as great accents. They are pretty prominent in the swatch, but won't be as much in the sweater. I've only done heel flaps so far, but might have to try short rows. I am working on my first two-at-a-time socks, so since they are already an experiment.....

I think the swatch is great and the sweater will be beautiful. Maybe you are having second thoughts because the original sweater is what you fell in love with, but you chose to go a completely different way as far as color is concerned. I, my self, am in a knitting funk. I've knit a sweater with the same yarn twice and I am going to rip it out for the third time. I'm thinking I'll just ball it up, put it away and do something else, because I'm tired of knitting the yarn! In about 3 weeks we will be having a yarn show here in Tacoma Washington. The Red Alder fiber arts retreat. They have it in the Murano Hotel. I only go the opening day, first thing, for a chance to buy some great yarn. But they do have classes and all that also, over the whole weekend. I'm hoping new yarn will get my creative mind moving again. Watching your podcasts really do help with the creative process. I enjoy all of your podcasts. I also love your yarn.

Yes palette cleansers! I just made it half way through my second try at a sweater swatch and I grabbed cotton yarn and I am making a wash cloth. 😂 So this woolen spun yarn!?!I am very new to knitting my first 2 second clothing project I made a super bulky yarn oversized cardigan and I need to weight train before I can wear it 😂😂 it is so heavy! So I might make another cardigan out of this light weight yarn. I want it big enough to wear as a robe like thing in the winter, so you don’t have to try to hard to imagine me dropping to my knees when I tried it on. Btw I made it in panels or I would have never finished. Have a good day! Thanks for all the much needed info I always get when I watch your videos.

I have opted to undo something that could be easily redone. I find that there could be so much regret when not taking the opportunity. I designed a sweater and working on the prototype. I too got the the bottom ribbing and unraveled when it didn't meet my expectations (mine was sloppy looking because the needle size wasn't small enough). I will be picking up yarn I ordered from a local yarn shop, as to make my husband a cardigan he's thinking of having in his wardrobe. I'm going for solid colour with simple structure but a slightly wider collar that will blend into the button panel... My project is now to get the measurements, make a swatch, and design the garment with its construct.. I would love to join any knit along but currently working 6 days a week, and taking what time I can to catch up on other tasks.... Can't wait to see how your projects progress

I think once you block the sweater swatch for your husband it will be great and the finished sweater will be so awesome!

the frankensweater! I have been following your progress with it with great interest 😆 i love it. I think it will look great without the decreases before the bottom ribbing, and i also think a slit down the ribbing would look awesome. its my favorite when sweaters have the side slit on the bottom on both sides and the back ribbing is a bit longer than the front, it also drapes down quite nicely because there is no chance of bunching. my favourtie things knitwear sweater no. 14 uses this technique and I love it!

I didn’t know that you were from Henderson! We drove through there last summer on our way from the Hoover Dam to my aunty’s in Las Vegas. Such a great trip (we’re from England, with family in the States).

Your swatch is beautiful! Here in the UK we have a yarn Festival in March coming up and I’m tempted to find yarn similar to your fire pit mitts, your pattern has been to my list of things to make and I’m inspired to make them once I finished the sock I’m knitting

I would like a greater contrast between the gray and the chartreuse. One or the other could be over dyed to be more saturated. I think the values are BOTH medium light and the navy is a nice dark value. But, maybe some like a subtle design where it all blends together? Photo it and put the photo thru your black and white filter and see what I mean. In quilting, we say “Value does all the work and color gets all the credit”

Love the yarn for the KAL. If it too purple forward, what about maybe overdyeing it with a little navy?

Your Franken sweater: I agree with you on the rib. I prefer looser fit at the rib and a split hem; some years ago it seemed the bottom rib was always tighter; knit with smaller needles to pull it in. The Versal sweater, I was surprised to see an Aran weight knit with size 8 US, must be very dense.

I just discovered your channel and love it! It‘s so funny that the boomerang heel is new to you, for me (a German knitter) it’s the first heel I ever learned. My favourite is the Fish Lips Kiss heel, which you can get on ravelry :) Your sweaters are beautiful!

My new heel that I love is the shadow wrap heel by Purl Knit. With this one you don't do the knit row before you start the second half. I only do short row heels now.

Taylor how about substitute the isolated yellow motive for blue (I mean the motive that is in between the yellow/blue) it is just a suggestion. Having say that, I like the colors and I am sure you are going to make an awesome sweater

My latest Frankensweater is a squishy oversize drop shoulder bottom up seamed garter stitch pullover with bishop sleeves and a fold over rib neck in a worsted/Aran weight yarn. I can't fit my winter coat over its gargantuan sleeves! It is in the naughty corner while I contemplate frogging and a redesign. So I cast on purple socks with shades of green for the contrast colourwork (since I have so many green remnants) as my palate cleanser. If you can call 80sts on size zero needles TAAT colourwork a palate cleanser lol.

Re: Kal Atlas sweater... do you have a gray throw pillow? If you took the chocolatey nutmeg pillow off your couch and put a gray pillow there instead, you'd be seriously close to seeing what the overall effect of the sweater will be. Personally, I like the larger needle size more, It just looks more flowy to me. But I think, overall, when you get it done, you're going to really like it. Meanwhile, just in case you felt like you were in a vacuum, work continues on the monster sweater here, also. I'm 2/3 of the way finished with the back, then I need to decide if I'm adding a belt, but it will be finished! (4500 yds of yarn later! omg!!!)

Hi Tayler! I think your color choices will look nice. Since you have so much yarn, can you lay it out on the table with your swatch... with a skein of the main color above your swatch and many skeins below, to try to mimic the propotions of the sweater?
