The Taylor 814ce has been one of the most popular high-end acoustic guitars in the world. Prized for its fantastic playability, articulate tone and all-purpose characteristics, the 814ce has found a home with finderstyle players, flat pickers and more. Taylor Guitar's commitment to quality is well documented and the flagship 800 series is a great testament to this excellence. Enter, the competitor from across the pond. Built in Eastern Europe in the Czech Republic, Furch Guitars has quickly been gaining attention as a guitar brand worthy of consideration. The Red Master's Choice utilizes Furch's own take on the Grand Auditorium body shape and has the same tone woods as the 814ce, utilizing Sitka Spruce for the top and East Indian Rosewood for the back and sides. Other features are decidedly high end and speak to the value found in the Furch Guitar line. Koa wood binding, abalone bordered top and intricate inlay along with Gotoh tuners are truly icing on the cake. While there are similarities between the 814ce and Furch Red Master's Choice, include the price, the tone is unique to each builder. Let's take a closer look at these two stellar guitars.

Chris...I’ve been watching a lot of music store and former music store employee produced videos. I just had the epiphany that yours are head and shoulders above the others. Why? You are honest, straight forward, intelligent and not pushing a sales agenda over straight shooting. In a word, you are trustworthy. You put yourself in the minds of the viewers and give advice for beginners as well as seasoned players and that advice is always offered with honesty, humility, intelligence, and with the best interests of your viewers at heart. Long may you run.

I recently purchased the Furch Red Master’s Choice and have since fallen in love with it. As a Taylor (214ce Koa’s, and 514ce and 814ce V-Bracing models) and PRS (too many to note) owner, I must say the Furch has a certain je ne said quoi that is difficult to quantify. The reason I say this is because much of the Furch experience is delightfully subjective - but even more is not. The sound of the Furch is simply the best I’ve heard - unabashedly subjective, I know. I’m a bit of a sound snob and often find something to complain about the sonic quality of most guitars. Owning a studio that focuses on hyper realistic 3D cinema audio technology does that to you. Clear. Clean. Defined. Delightful. This has been my Furch Red experience so far - even on the entry Red. The Sitka Spruce sings effortlessly - so much so that I prefer the tone of Sitka over its European counterpart after sampling each on other models. The construction is second to none. Look closely - it’s flawless. The materials are first class, joinery perfect, abalone sparkles and is beautifully set, inlays are perfect and the interiors are clean and finished well. The overall design tells a story of no detail bring overlooked. Even the case is indestructible it seems! My one niggle was the strings. Mine had 11’s (Ernie Ball?) on it. I simply didn’t care for them. I swapped them out for Elixir Phosphorous Bronze nanoweb 12’s. For me, it was a significant sound and playability improvement - yet another subjective measure of delight. The only real negative, if there are any is to be expected - the Furch experience comes at a price. They’re not inexpensive but I believe provide a worthwhile investment for those wanting a guitar to call their own for a lifetime. As always, Alamo did a great review. It got me to our Furch dealer and whipping out my card. I want to thank all of you for opening my eyes to the experience of this wonderful instrument.

I ended up going with Elixir Strings 16545 Acoustic Phosphor Bronze Guitar Strings with NANOWEB Coating. Sound brilliant. One small complaint. I cannot seem to find the built-in gin and tonic dispenser on this instrument. Still not quite perfect - but pretty close nonetheless!😋

Well, let's speed R&D up a bit, shall we? I have noticed that I'm starting to get too much blood in my alcohol system. I cannot dance as well, am not nearly as funny or philosophical, and certainly am not as handsome - and my dog doesn't like me as well. I believe we can all see the dangers of such catastrophic design failures. It's simply not pretty. Keep up the good work. 🤪

I’m 35 now and I bought a Taylor GS8 when I was 20. For the last 15 years I’ve played every brand of acoustic for one I liked more than my Taylor. I never found one until today when I played and then purchased a Furch Yellow D CR. It’s the nicest guitar I’ve ever played or heard by a large margin. I’m addicted to playing it and will have it my whole life. Thank you so much to this wonderful company. Thanks to all the men and women who work at Furch. Greatly appreciate it with all my heart 🙏❤️

Furch Yellow D CR? Those are kind of rare to come by. I happen to buy that one too. I changed the strings to Martin medium retros and gained much more power and projection. I lost a little of the rich tone though. But, it still retains plenty of the rich tone. It might be the cedar top. I think. I liked it so much that I gave up on a Martin D 35. Yes. I am with you. You can’t help it, but fall in love with the guitar.

I played 2 Furch at Winter NAMM this year. It felt great but due to the noise level in the auditorium I couldn’t pick up the nuance or tonal distinction. It felt very good to my hand however. A very nice neck carve. The comparison here confirmed my suspicion that the Furch is a worthy competitor to Taylor in the GA size. The aesthetics are beautiful as well. I have an issue with the LR Baggs Pro however as I can’t get past the huge preamp panel inlaid into the upper bout. It reminds me of acoustic electrics from 15 years ago. I have an Anthem dual source in my 814 and love it, but it’s the sound hole unit which I greatly prefer. Thanks Chris!

One thing I find incredibly frustrating with MANY guitar reviews online is how the reviewers often avoid expressing their own opinions. I watch until the end expecting some kind of summary or evaluation but then the video just stops! The reviewer here is obviously an expert (and a great player) so it would be interesting to hear his view on the pros and cons of the compared guitars and what the main differences are.

I’ve followed your channel for so long, not sure how I missed this video. Everything is subjective to one’s tastes. I’ve owned several Taylors over the years. Truly liked them but never loved them. Over the last year I got to try two Furch OM guitars, side by side with some 14 series Taylor guitars. A very high end shop, no background distractions. For me, and this is for ME, the Furch is more pleasing for my style. So much so in fact, I have listed a Martin for sale with the intent of buying a Furch. Thank you for all your great videos

Hi Chris, thanks for the comparison here between these two guitars which are my favourites as I would like to play for my life . Still so far , I only got to listen to Furch guitar playing on youtube but not yet played myself on it. After listening to both of them played by you here, I just feel both are equal but Furch with LR Bags Anthem, I would grab it , provided its Fretboard made with pure dark ebony with brilliant dot inlays of mother of pearls on it as it makes playing guitar when being watched on by viewers. With regard to Taylor, I have a choice with the one with Deluxe model with armrest.

I’ve enjoyed your videos for quite a while now; thank you, Chris! I prefer the Furch - but I am biased. Bought my first Furch, a Yellow GC SC (dealer special) earlier today after testing about a dozen guitars from four manufacturers, Furch, Lakewood, Martin, and Taylor. The closest competitor to the Yellow were another Furch (Orange OM SR, also in a dealer special edition) and a Lakewood M-32 CP. The Lakewood sounded excellent, except the bass was slightly less defined. The Orange was excellently balanced and surprisingly loud for an OM, but ultimately the wider dynamic range of the Yellow and the clarity of the bass, maybe due to the Cocobolo, tipped it for the Yellow. Your comparison with a Red and your testing a Yellow in another video appears to confirm my impression that there is not much difference in sound and quality between the top lines of Furch. They are just great guitars.

As this video is edited, there is never a chance to hear the two guitars immediately back to back from the same input source. The only way to hear direct A-B comparisons is to click around the timeline to try to find the same thing being played through the mic or the line input. Thanks.

Quite a long review but it certainly worthwhile. I've been listening to the Furch on a few reviews and am very impressed. But both outstanding guitars and I would be happy with either.

To me (listening on cell phone), the Furch is a little warmer with more throaty mids. I like the more full tonal spectrum the LR Baggs Pickup provides too but it seems to compress the low end more on the line input. BUT, those overtones and harmonics on the v-class were beautiful and rang forever.

Great vid as usual! Could you post a demo video of the Furch Vintage2 DSR with an LR Baggs anthem or stagepro plugged in so we can hear the sound of the pickup in comparison to a Martin HD-28e or HD28 with an LR Baggs anthem in it? I think performers would like to to hear how they sound plugged in since we can't really use a mic onstage for most shows. These guitars are phenominal acoustically into a mic, but need to hear them amplified. Thanks!

Yes, as was pointed out, they are Gotoh tuners. Also, the video is slightly misleading in saying that they use tap tuning. Traditional tap tuning is not employed. It is a high tech “equivalent” if you will. More info is on Furch’s website.

Both seem to loose the bottom end when on the pickups. That really just tells me that each needs some EQ to optimize their pickup input, depending on what they are going into. As far the mic'd or "true' sound, I thought the Furch was a little muddy compared to the Taylor. YMMV

One thing about all of the Furchs I own and have played is that they open up faster than any other guitar brand out there. I'm convinced that even after 2 weeks of consistent play, you will have a more open guitar. Also, the CNR neck is as stable as it gets. Flawless, beautiful fretwork, and excellent tone and playability. Yes, I'm biased, but for good reason. :-)

Another video on the controversial topic Taylor vs Furch :o) It's all about personal preference. To me the Furch tones are more mellow and warm while the Taylor's have more volume, definition, and sustain. I can see how the mellowness and warmth of the Furch appeal to most people, hence, I totally understand the consensus choice. BTW I have both Taylor and Furch guitars; I have the more expensive versions Taylor 814ce Builder's Edition and Furch Red Deluxe. I like both guitars but IMO the Talor just edges out the Furch by a hair. And Mr. Cooper Greenberg of Alamo Music can vouch for me since he sold me my Taylor 814ce BE guitar :o)

I owned a Taylor K20CE and a Furch G23CR-C Yellow Series. Although they are not similar guitars but the feel and playability goes to Furch. It is so comfortable to play. The sensitivity is great. Light finger touch is so melodic. In short I am not struggling to squeeze every bit of its juice. The Taylor is too bright and twangy for my taste. I also notice that the neck setup and relief system of the Taylor is not that stable and rigid compared to Furch. And so it produces this inconsistent sound and feel to it. I think it has something to do with the neck design and how it is made. Furch have a very stable and super rigid CNR system with carbon casing in it. So the neck stays the same whatever tunings, temperatures or humidity you find yourself in. Whereas the Taylor 3 piece bolt on neck system with shims is not really that stable to be honest. In the winter it flex a bit while in summer it extends. This is just my honest opinion. My deciding factor. So I stayed with the Furch and boy it didn't disappoint me. Consistent full, rich and melodic sound all the time. Plus the overtones are WoW!

I recently got this guitar - in no small part through this video, without trying it! Risky I know. I went to my local store (andertons in Guildford UK) and played quite a few top end acoustics. I have a guild D55 which to me is still the best acoustic I’ve ever had or heard, but was looking for something electro to replace my old Takamene. Was also looking for the shimmer of a Taylor. I played a D2 Collings, an 815, a d28, a 512, a d18 1935, and a hummingbird. They were all amazing, but not terribly inspiring, although the hummingbird was special, but just a bit close to my guild. If I didn’t have the guild I’d have got a hummingbird. The Collings was flawless but somehow dull. So I got the Furch. It’s pretty special. Has way more character than the Taylor as well as being both more punchy with a more rounded bottom end. It’s at least as well made, probably better, than the Taylor. And it’s playability is stunning, possibly even better than the 814. Plugged in it’s streets ahead, I’m a solo singer player so can use the mic from the baggs with no piezo it’s very very natural sounding. So it’s a heartfelt recommendation from me. It’s a hard guitar to put down.

Maybe it's just me, but I genuinely think there's something more eastern sounding in the Furch, and something distinctly American and steely in the Taylor. Love the sound of both, but I'd pick the Furch in this video over the Taylor. I'm willing to bet the Taylor has slightly easier playability.

I am staying away from Taylor’s now. I ordered a 314ce with V bracing online and hated it so much I drove it back to the shop that was 2 hours away. It was so thin sounding and the top didn’t resonate at all. I tried the 324CE in store and it was a bit better, but neither were as good as the Furch Blue GW SW that I eventually settled on. I don’t think Taylor can keep up on quality with the amount of guitars they push out! 10 years ago, my 314ce was amazing though! Shame they changed their bracing.

I'd love to get my hands on a couple of the Furch offereings. Perhaps next time I'm in Nashville. Personally I don't like what Taylor did to the 814 *with v bracing*. It didn't need janglier highs and LESS bass projection. What it needed was a more ARICULATE sound from what it was. It's fairly easy to accomplish with a 814ce-X. 12-56 hybrid (or 13-56) string gauge (Elixir), quality even density bone saddle and choice of bridge pins, Buffalo horn or Martin liquid metal. Better balance, more projection more articulation without sacrificing warmth without the muddy sound. I think a better comparison to all the Furch guitars in the Taylor lineup is the Taylor 914.

The Furch is beautiful, but when does it become too much bling? Subjective question. I can't play as pretty as that guitar looks lol. The plugged in sound is better in my opinion too. Actually better sounding than it's acoustic sound. Another question. Do we tend to equate the muddier sound of guitars "better" than the brighter Taylors on these comparisons because of the Taylor bias already baked in? I have a basic Taylor, but to me, when playing on it own, I never think of it as "bright", but it is my only acoustic and it will stay that way until I get more used to acoustic guitars. How is the neck feel on them? The playability? I heard the Furch is like the Taylor that way in that is is an easy player. Lastly, being left handed, I can always count on getting a left hand model of the Taylor. What is the wait time for the Furch? I "custom built" one on their site and the PDF says it would go for $ 4,575 with a base price of $ 3,627. They have my interest. The funny thins about Taylors is; my 214ce-K looks almost identical to the 814. I've heard the sweet spot on Taylors are the cheaper models as they bring more bang for the buck.

I am presently looking to Purchase one these two guitars. I've played plenty of high end Taylor's so I already know how they feel and how they sound, but good luck finding a Furch dealer. Fortunately most reputable guitar stores allow returns with buyer paid return shipping. To my ear the Taylor sounded much fuller and had more clarity mic'd.The Furch sounded better plugged in. I'm leaning toward the Furch because he Indicated the it has a very player friendly fretboard,of course playability is a Subjective term. The 2nd reason is because I play plugged in by plugged in 95% of the time when I gig. Finally...man just look at the beauty of that furch.

Okay, I’m a Martin guy. The last Taylor I owned was a 615, and it was a very good instrument. Comparing the Taylor to the Furch... they seemed to be a better set of rivals than comparing a Furch to - let’s say, a Martin M36. All that being said, I felt that the Furch sounds a bit “muddy” compared acoustically, but with the L.R. Baggs system it really becomes a special instrument. I will admit, that particular Furch model is eye catching and spectacular!

I don't like how you went from mic to line on the same guitar before the switch. Do mic first for both, then line for both. It threw me off bigtime. When I skip ahead myself past the plug in parts, which can be changed via EQ, the Furch definitely sounds more clear, brighter, rounder, and better overall tone.

Reluctantly, as an owner of 4 Taylors, I would have to give first place to the Furch. It has a more open/aged sound. And the preamp was on point and sounded better than the ES2. Was considering recently going the route of the Furch, but instead purchased a Taylor 324e. Furch just didn’t have to top wood options I was looking for. They did have one, but would have had to go the custom route and spend about $5k. No thank you. Maybe in the future I will revisit a Furch. Would love to own one one day. I predict they will be the next big guitar company. They could eventually surpass Taylor, Martin, and Gibson.

I feel the same about your comment where Furch is going to advance far beyond where they are currently. Surpassing Taylor and Martin anytime soon in terms of sales sounds like a bit of a pipe dream. Furch apparently averages about 7000 guitars a year at this time. With this said they have a ways to go. With scaling will inevitably come quality problems. I like where they are right now to be honest. I have never played a bad Furch and I have played a few. Very consistently good. Their build quality exceeds that of Martin and Gibson and at least rivals that of Taylor. Value proposition is very high. Love the high quality case that ships with them too!

This is a difficult one to call. Without the technical knowledge that others here use to explain the various harmonics, compression, etc. etc., I found myself just listening to see which had the richer sound, longer sustain, and tonal qualities. On some of your pieces, I thought, wow, the Taylor has it nailed, only to change my mind on the next piece. I did notice, that you seem to be more comfortable and accurate with the Furch, maybe it's easier to play? due to narrower neck, better action, not really sure. Because they are close in the sound department, I would choose the Furth for it's playability. In fact, when I am ready to buy my Red Masters Choice, I will be contacting Alamo.

From my personal experience I took a 1 1/2 hour drive to try out both of these guitars at 2 different locations with my mind set that I was seriously going to purchase one of these guitars. I was also going to trade my Taylor 414 CE shaded edge burst acoustic guitar. But was disappointed with both of these guitars in comparison to my Taylor 414 CE. Especially disappointed with the Furch. The Furch does have a great pickup system though. I did learn a very valuable lesson, that just because a guitar's more expensive, doesn't necessarily mean I'm actually getting a better guitar than I already have. It also helped that I played my guitar back to back with the other 2 guitars to compare them.

What I noticed for sure is the minimal difference in Furch tone between external mic and line. The Taylor is very noticeable. It's hard to compare a Taylor V-Class with an X-Bracing guitar of the same size and shape. Between these two I probably prefer the Furch, but instead I would buy a Taylor 814 with X-bracing or a Taylor 810 with X-bracing. You'd have to buy used, 2015 or older?. I'm not sure when they started changing the bracing. I have a 1995 Taylor 810, and it has the same bass without the muddy highs, with the classic Taylor voice. To me, the Furch sounds more like my Taylor 2021 818e V class, but with the huge square cut out of the side of the guitar, and the X-bracing bass over-tones. But the 818 is much larger, thicker, and heavier than the 814ce V-Class or the Furch, nor does it have the bevels. I also love the Furch's pick guard. In my opinion, and it's just that, NO pick-up comes close to a guitar that you can get the real guitar sound without boominess or feedback (V-Class is a great example). That said, I really liked the Furch, and I would consider the red series in my next purchase if I could get it without the pick-up and without the cut-away. I never play up that high on the fretboard, and I'd rather have the additional cavity volume, and again I can't stand that huge square pick-up.

I really enjoyed this demo. Nothing sounds like a Taylor and the comparison is great, but I believe Furch vs. Martin would be more apples to apples. I really like the Furch sound (heck Adrian Bellue can't be wrong) but the Furch sounds more muddy than the 814. You just don't hear the notes as clearly. Regardless, I would like to own both just for the versatility.

Yes, you are so right. Nothing sounds like a Taylor. Even If it was just an audio demo, i could tell which one was the Taylor. The Furch is a very good sounding Acoustic Guitar. But in my opinion, the sound is not distinctive. So i would have to compare it with any other very good Guitars out there. Taylor Guitars fits well in a Band setting, because it has a bright and sparkly sound that can cut through the mix. But it would be good to have the Furch as well, because it has a warm and mellow sound. But a Taylor is a Taylor. Love it or leave it.

Still like the 814 natural tone better, slightly more balanced with chimey highs for finger style. That being said their Piezo pickup is outdated so they need to come up with a better option for their high end models. I wouldn’t pay for an 814 purely on that basis alone

Taylor sits well in a mix because it has a more cutting and focused tone. Furch on the other hand is fuller, which is great for solo playing. I prefer Furch, because for that price range, an acoustic guitar should sound like a cathedral, full and can stand on its own and highlights the quality of wood and craftsmanship. Don’t get me wrong, that 814ce can stand on its own for sure, but the Furch stands firmer than it in this context.
