We have so much to see and know and most of us just skim the surface of everything without taking a deeper look or second thought. You can't have concrete knowledge or opinions without actually paying attention, and yes that might include research. Otherwise we would be "i think this is right but like i could be wrong ykno?" I hope this poem helps make people realize this.

I'm a sophomore in high school, and nobody at my school talks about anything worth talking about. People have no interest for anything important and would rather have pointless conversations. it seems to me that they like being ignorant, and they don't want to learn. i think this is because learning makes you think, and anyone who thinks differently or stands up for what they believe in are labeled as "weird". Nobody wants to be left out

@gymnistico I am not wrong. Human language by definition is capable of infinite expression. Whether or not a specific way of speaking is "correct" or not is purely based on social stigma. To say one way of speaking is more correct than another is LITERALLY the same argument as saying one race or skin color is more correct than another. It is not based on anything that can be supported with any kind of scientific evidence. Linguistics is a science; I doubt Mali has the foggiest idea about it.

This is one of the best collaborations I have ever been privileged to enjoy. Taylor Mali inspires imagination, and Ronnie Bruce applies that inspiration. I show this video in the beginning of the semester to every one of my classes.

I'm not certain about that. I already said this, so please read. Indeed, he is not saying to question, he is saying to not question. "You know?" and "right?" are questions. You can tell by the question marks. I'll rephrase so you might understand: He says we should not ask those questions at the end of our statements. I say it's actually smarter, albiet less practical, if we do. We can't meaningfully "declare things to be true" unless we know things. And we don't even know what "knowing" is.

This isn't about never questioning your own beliefs or re-examining them. This is speaking as if you're so open-minded, not one belief, fact, or conviction can stay in there. That rising question noise at the end of a declarative sentence is the equivalent of saying, "though everything I just said is negotiable depending on your reaction."

So glad my professor assigned this; I love it! Hadn't ever heard of Mali before, but I am now hooked :) Also- been stuck in terrible writers' block territory for a long time, and hearing Mali's poetry has struck exactly the right chord I needed to hear to guide me back to the land of creativity. I now have the urge to write again!!! Thanks, Mr. Mali! You, like, totally rock~

Many can learn from this. People these days never like to speak up about certain predicaments that occur in today's times, they rather be complacent with what ever happens or that they receive.

i strongly agree with gloomyoutlook. ignorance is the most violent element of society. so called false prophets turn into activist preaching complete lies. these people are the most dangerous aside from extremeist. this message is for real truthseekers, followers of jordan maxell, micheal tsarion, noah chomsky, etc. people who are trying to make a difference and actually do thier homework.

Are you certain about that? Anyway, he is not saying to question...he is saying that our society has become inarticulate that many people feel the need to end sentences with things like "you know?" or "right?", even when they are statements, not needing those questions at the end.

@c16sh1 Actually you have only gotten part of it right he is talking about his generation (generation X) who made the "valley girl" trend and then passed it on to the latest generation. Though you would fully know or understand this if you don't look him up and get some of his background information.

This is, like, brilliant. My head literally exploded, ya know? Seriously though, the coda I would add to Mr Mali's message is that the strength of your statement of opinion should be reinforced by the tempering process of being held up to serious and rigorous intellectual scrutiny. A fallacy asserted with conviction is still a crap statement.

@spyroninja I am sorry to point out that you are incorrect. There are indeed incorrect ways of speaking. Examples exist all around us and always will. That said, you could easily treat this not as a criticism of speech patterns but rather as a criticism of how so many people are so afraid to offend someone with their convictions that they allow themselves to not have any. Or at the very least they let themselves appear to always be unsure of what they believe.

Questions are useful tools, but only if there are quantifiable answers to them; there are many questions today that only bring a mind more deeply into the quagmire of uncertainty. Life is too short to be uncertain. People need to get to know Mr. Truth on a first Name basis, and His Name is JESUS, who is the CHRIST.

Maybe the reasons teenagers use these devices is because we're told by society that we aren't allowed to know what we are talking about until we have a college degree and a few years under our belt. Maybe all this pressure is too much. Maybe I want to voice my opinion but am not willing to. Not because I am stupid, but because I know there is always someone, someone like Mr. Mali, getting ready to cut us down. We will speak up when you learn to give us room to be heard.

+ctyoung16 The point is to continue to speak with conviction and believe you are right and fight for yourself instead of back down at the face of any opposition. Who cares if they know more than you and are pretentious about it? Fuck what they think if they look down upon you for your opinion. Speak it anyway. Anyone will respect you more if you speak with a purpose than if you are afraid of what someone else might say or think.
