Russell Mitchem Yes, it is a rare ability to be able to describe such deep subjects so poetically, and clearly enough to allow even lay people to catch a glimmer of what the experts understand - to grasp the basics at least. And to be able to do so with complete honesty, even when the subject treads on some people's cherished beliefs without sounding confrontational is a feat. It almost makes me think that, like "journalist", "science communicator" ought to be a college major somewhere. A major combining a broad understanding of science with philosophy, and creative literature. I have heard detractors ask about what major research Tyson has done, as if that is all that matters. One Tyson has the potential to create a dozen Hawkings, or Krauss's, in his career.

This is long overdue, but I want to take the time to thank everyone who has ever shared, watched, respectfully commented on, or liked this video. The overwhelming response I received from you all was far more than I had hoped for or could have even imagined. I made this video for fun because I am passionate about science & nature which naturally led me to Neil deGrasse Tyson. I am proud to have made Neil's most popular video on the web, and will continue promoting the wonder of life and our understanding of our place in the the cosmos. I have received more heartwarming messages in my inbox than I could ever read, which makes me incredibly happy but also sorry that I can't respond to all of you. I also want to extend my thanks to Sony Music Entertainment for deciding to unblock this video. I am truly happy to be able to continue sharing Neil's powerful answer with you. Again, thank you all for the support. Cheers!

Until classical physics is no longer sufficient to explain the world around us or the universe at large. Then you will have to question your faith in science. There is more, far more, than the explanations provided by contemporary scientists lauded as gods, such as Tyson. Most of astrophysics is speculation. No one can prove the Big Bang, no one can prove stars are being born anymore. We are just making guesses based on observations.
@doodelay
@doodelay 10 жыл бұрын
eternalnate Whenever you see a star that is a different color than another it is because they are in different stages of their respective life cycles. We've seen stars forming, stars in the middle, and stars that have died. Our star is in the middle of its life cycle, it is considered yellow now but as it loses it's mass it's outer gaseous layers will escape further into space making it appear larger. Eventually it will deplete its fuel reserves, blast out its gaseous layers and explode. I would like to point out that assumptions based on observation is much more reliable than assumptions based on anything else. All intelligent men and women realize that assumptions are not a dirty word as long as they can be falsified, verified, and subject to change. And star formation matches those criteria quite flawlessly.

Does anyone else think that maybe... just maybe science should and is becoming a part of our popular culture again? I honestly don't understand how it ever wasn't. Science not only searches for the answers to our deepest questions, but is our way of exploring, as scientists are our explorers. How can we not realize that science NEEDS to be a part of our culture, part of the framework of our society. Please do your bit and embrace science as a part of our culture, and like the atoms formed in the depths of ancient stars, is a part of us.

He's almost there, but he didn't quite make it. The most astounding fact in the universe beyond the fact that anything exists at all, is that it has arranged itself to become self aware. We observe the universe and its wonders; chances are there are billions of other creatures beyond earth that are able to appreciate the universe as well. That to me is the most astounding fact.
@jonathanbriand3446

If we could see the univers AND the energy moving in (from outside - far enough) it may look like brain cells connected to each others, and this pattern repeat in our own body and also the body we live on (Earth). I dont know if he is old enough but this universe may also be self-aware of himself. We say our possibility to think can act on things around us. So I can barely imagine what this universe can produce in term of reaction when he think or dreams like we do. Some may say the universe is god if you follow my perception, well I dont think so, it may be closer to be the reflection of god when we look at it with our own eyes and the way they works. (all this being a simple theory, I dont want to sound like I talk facts, its a feeling)

Michael Burkett Everyone has their own idea of what their 'most astounding fact' is. :) For me, it's hard to say what's the most astounding fact, because every single thing -- not even every living being, every single thing that exists (at least within our perception/observation) even the unknown -- the scale of things, the amount, wrath, and beauty of things, how far we think we've come with technology and as a race, but we truly and hardly know anything -- we don't even know what the Milky Way looks like because we're on the inside looking out. Man, I'm all over the place! Lol. I just want to know more! "The more you know, the more you realize you don't know." That quote holds such truth.
@unit-0-
@unit-0- 9 жыл бұрын
Ray Klish I understand that it is somewhat subjective, however in some ways it is measurable to the extent that tracing atoms to the beginnings is less impressive and more arithmetic versus the idea that anything even exists at all; or the fact that atoms have arranged themselves in a manner that have eventually evolved to our consciousness. Yes, there may be other great ideas, nonetheless I don't think his astounding fact is as impressive as so many others that could be mentioned.

@@gregl3949 The most astounding fact is the knowledge that the atoms that comprise life on Earth, the atoms that make up the human body, are traceable to the crucibles that cooked light elements into heavy elements in their core under extreme temperatures and pressures. These stars, the high mass ones among them, went unstable in their later years. They collapsed and then exploded, scattering their enriched guts across the galaxy. Guts made of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and all the fundamental ingredients of life itself. These ingredients become part of gas clouds that condense, collapse, form the next generation of solar systems, stars with orbiting planets. And those planets now have the ingredients for life itself. So that when I look up at the night sky and I know that yes, we are part of this universe, we are in this universe, but perhaps more important than both of those facts is that the universe is in us. When I reflect on that fact, I look up-many people feel small because they’re small and the universe is big-but I feel big, because my atoms came from those stars. There’s a level of connectivity. That’s really what you want in life, you want to feel connected, you want to feel relevant, you want to feel like you’re a participant in the goings-on of activities and events around you. That’s precisely what we are, just by being alive.

This Is The Most Touching Video I Have Ever Watched 2018 Edit: Hello. I am back. One year later exactly. Never expected this to blow up. This video inspired me and now I am more interested in the universe then anything else. I love science and I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who liked or replied to this. See you in a years time :) 2019 edit: Hey, I'm back. Still love science and still love this video. Always Remember you are something bigger than you think. If you think you are the best thing in the universe, You are better than that. If you thing you are the worst thing in the universe, you are not. You are the best thing. Never give up and remember that you are Amazing. You can do anything. You are the best thing that has ever happened in the history of the whole universe.

This video is a prime example as to why I will always appreciate the value and power of the internet. Without the World Wide Web, I would not have been able to experience such exquisite beauty and insight. Yes, there are bad aspects to the internet, I’m not naive enough to deny that. But I feel that the internet gives more than it takes. That level of connection Neil was talking about in the video can be felt by anyone with a mere WiFi signal or cellular connection. The internet will always be one of my favorite places to learn about our world and discover new ideas. I am given some sense of that connection because of the 1’s and 0’s that travel across oceans to reach me.

Them: "So you're an atheist." Me: "I am, yes." Them: "So you think when you die you're just going to rot? You don't think there's anything to look forward to after you die?" Me: "Let me tell you what's going to happen when I die, assuming my family follows the instructions I've left. What will happen is I will be cremated, and my ashes will be scattered into the waters off of Big Pine Key -- its one of the Florida Keys, one of my favorite places on Earth, in fact. My remains will thus become a part of the ocean. Some might be consumed by fish, or by worms, or by slugs. Other parts of it will dissolve and become part of the water itself. Some will drift down and join the sea-bottom muck. The point is, I'll basically become a part of the earth in a wider, greater way than I am right now." "And then, in about 5 billion years, the sun will expand. In so doing, it will cook the oceans into steam, and blast the atmosphere of the Earth into space. The Earth itself will follow shortly after that. Some of the Earth -- of which I am a part -- will be blasted into space, while the rest will become part of the mass of the now-expanded Sun. The parts of me that are sent into space will drift. Some will fall back into the Sun, or be captured by one of the planets on the edge of the solar system, but other parts will make it out." "My remains will become part of the universe in one of the most fundamental ways possible. And who knows. In billions of years, some atom that was once a part of me might end up being a part of some brand new life form that no human will ever know." "I don't know about you, but I think that's something to look forward to after I die."

It's strange, because there are certain parallels between what NDT said and many religions like Christianity, Buddhism and even ancient Norse (and I'm sure many others). For example, when he says that our atoms came from the stars, and the universe is in us, is that not so very different from the Bible saying that we came from God and that God is within us? Another is that when we die, our atoms become part of the Earth, if we get eaten by an animal or a tree feeds off our nutrients then our atoms become part of it (Reincarnation). And after that, once earth dies when our Sun expands then our atoms will return to the stars, like the Bible says that when we die we go to heaven (Except in this situation everyone is welcome to come), and we may become a part of stars anew. My favorite parallel however is that the proposed end of the universe is said to occur when a mass of black holes destroy all stars in the universe. Our atoms will be in these stars, and so it's kind of like the ancient Norse Ragnarok, where the dead heroes in Valhalla fight in a battle that brings about the end of the world (or in this case, universe). I am not supporting the plausibility of creationism, but I am merely voicing that maybe the two points of view are not too different as we think :)

***** Who's close minded here? OJVdB's point is a good one. It is possible that religious stories are mythologies created to explain the universe in a symbolic sense as opposed to one of a more literal fashion. He/She/It is not saying that "God is Great", rather that the stories put forth by the religious might in fact be telling the same tale as science, albiet in a more poetic manner that is easier for those not able or willing to acquire a complete scientific education. If a philosopher looks at the night sky and says, "I am small and yet I am part of this greater thing, this cosmos..." and that this thought in time is incorporated into some structure of faith based teachings, that sense of inter-connectivity and acknowledgement of the complexity of the universe is no less true [social commentary]even if it is used by a corrupt "religious" system to gain control over a population and restrict their thought and behavior in order to drive their productivity to pad the pockets of those who control production and supply.[/social commentary]

How could 1,000 people (*or any person at all*) dislike such a beautiful, thought-provoking video? If you're a deeply religious person but don't like having your beliefs challenged, why did you even watch this video in the first place? ***** How exactly am I being a "pretentious cock"? I simply asked why religious people who don't want to have their beliefs challenged bother to watch videos they know will challenge their beliefs and then proceed to dislike the video. Sometimes they'll also leave comments about how they're so special that they happened to be born into the *ONE* religion that got it correct, *out of approximately 4,000*. They also claim they're so special that they happen to believe in the *RIGHT* god(s). I'm what you call an agnostic atheist. This means that because there is simply no tangible, scientific evidence for any of the *approximately 2,500 recorded gods throughout history*, atheists and I have absolutely no reason to believe in your god or anyone else's; however, we're humble enough to admit that we can't be absolutely certain about whether or not a god exists (this is the "agnostic" part). If you show me or any other atheist tangible, scientific evidence for the existence of your god or any of the other gods, we'll drop what we're doing and believe until we die. If you're a monotheist, you're an atheist, with respect to approximately 2,499 gods in which you fearlessly don't believe because your parents didn't teach you about them. Why, then, is it such a big deal when we atheists simply go one god further than you guys? Tell me again, who's being a pretentious cock?

***** "You are not meant to understand." What the fuck does that even mean? Are you trying to say that you're better than me by telling me that you've achieved some "higher level of thinking" because your god decided that you were special enough to "understand"? If your god doesn't want me to go to hell, why doesn't he make the effort to help me "understand" scripture better so I'll believe in him again (I was raised Roman Catholic)? I guess your rebuttal is half-right: I will never try to "understand" by making up spooky, cryptic interpretations; for I am intellectually honest with myself and don't waste my life by basing it off a Bronze Age book written at a time when everyone thought Earth was flat, thought Earth was the center of the universe, and didn't know where the sun went at night. You're also right, in the sense that I may never understand why you guys don't see religion for the lie and scam that it is. Even individual Christians "understand" the Bible in different ways; for example, conservative Christians oftentimes cite Old Testament verses (and some New Testament verses) as justifications for their anti-gay stances and their view that women have nothing better to contribute to society other than pumping out several children and being stay-at-home mothers who basically live in the kitchen. On the other hand, liberal Christians cherry-pick the nice, happy verses from Psalms, Proverbs, the Gospel, and Jesus' message in the Sermon on the Mount (*Love everyone, no matter how different they may be from you*) as justifications for their acceptance of LGBT people and other oppressed minorities. If the Bible, Quran, and other holy books each claim to be the perfect, innerant word of God or whatever gods they claim to represent, why is it possible for two people of the *SAME RELIGION* to have *COMPLETELY DIFFERENT INTERPRETATIONS*???

Everyone should be able to have there own Ideas about our existence, being destructive and imposing on others really doesn't show that you even understand your belief, If you really toke some time to yourself you would understand and you would be able to accept the fact that we are really on this earth as one species, we should respect that and respect each other.

Well I think there are a lot of great things one can do. Science is great; but it also is very powerful, and if not done, executed and applied with wisdom, it can bring forth as much evil as it could also bring forth good. That is just how it is. Any real scientist should have that type of respect for it, terrible, quaking respect. This is because science is knowledge, or a means to knowledge, and knowledge of a very excellent kind; thus also of a kind imbued with great power, and from that comes great responsibility to use that knowledge well, and also to ensure that the knowledge is not gained before or without what is needed to handle it well being in place first, and gained only through ethical method. (And avoiding the Nazi camps is the barest _minimum_ ethical standard.)

Could you tell me what _exactly_ you consider to be "corruption and lies" from them, and furthermore, exactly what _evidence_ you have of this malfeasance on their part, ideally evidence that should be good enough to be accepted at a court of law, because in a way you are alleging a crime (whether it really is or not, the situation is analogous enough to reasonably warrant a similar standard.)?

The truth of what know (and gaining) of the natural world is beautiful and good, but why should all that truth and beauty exist at all? I believe Truth is One and all truth that we find is grounded in God (Who is the Sheer Act of Truth Itself).
@MrJoystickid
@MrJoystickid 9 жыл бұрын
David Viscuso The problem is that our concept of god is derived from our lack of understanding of the natural world 2000 years ago. This is why god has human qualities, we have anthropomorphized nature so that we could have a concept or a reason for things that have happened naturally. The gods of all religions ever created and then discarded by humans have been anthropomorphized. We know nothing of anything beyond the known universe and that is the only true fact when discussing this topic! To claim otherwise would be to lie to others and ourselves. What do we know of the starting point 13.5 billion years ago? Very little is the answer and should we be so arrogant as to presume or claim that this inconceivably large universe was created so we could live on this tiny bit of habitable land on a spec of dust suspended in a sunbeam?? Should we fuck, we should be humbled by the fact that we even exist with the ability to think and consider our place in this wondrous place. The god of religion is bullshit created by scared primitive humans...FACT!

No. The Monotheistic God in the Bible (I am who I am) was never believed to be a being on top of Mount Olympus or a god in the sky. (Jews were not Greeks). For the God I'm talking about is not a being or a deity but rather the Pure Act of Existence Itself. And by the way, I didn't mention the Big Bang. Big Bang has nothing to do with anything. There could be tons of universes for all I know. But it doesn't the change the fact that the world as we know it is contingent and that is a mystery. Why should the Laws of Physics exist at all? How can there be a novel without an Author? How can there be a painting without an Artist?

This is one of my favorite videos of all time. The remnants of dead stars is not only what make of the universe but it's also what makes up all life including human life. We don't live in the universe we are the universe, Just as much as a planet or a star. This most astounding fact is why I was able to find my spirituality after years of meaningless existence. I truly feel like we are the eternal universe. We are all one. If everyone knew and truly believed that we are all literally one organism, We could have peace on earth. "The only reality for man is a human reality. And the vision of humanity will become clear only when man looks into himself. He who looks outside, dreams. He who looks inside, awakens." -Carl Jung- By looking up and out into the Universe we are looking into our own souls. If that doesn't make you feel... Something unexplainable, Then I don't know what could.

This video has inspired me so much. I first saw this when I was 13 or 14 and it instantly hit me so hard. I watched it so many times after that, I had memorised the whole thing. I could revise the entire quote from memory without even actively having tried that. During this fase I watched Neil deGrasse Tyson's series and even read his book (that was quite difficult for a 14 year old with a different mother language) and wanted to become an astronomer. Sadly I had to give up on that because my math skills are far too poor, but I got into philosophy and fell in love. Now, at 18 I look back on this video and realise that what really got me from this video wasn't the science talk, but obviously the deeper meaning behind his words and the way he talks about life. In the end it was the philosophical message that inspired me so greatly. Thank you for this video! It actually had a big impact on my life I think :) I'll always have immense respect and admiration for those who pursue astronomy or astrophysics, you are heros.

If you dislike this video because of your religion then to me that makes no sense. As you must realize that being religious and having a cosmic perspective should go hand in hand, does it not? All Neil deGrasse Tyson did was broaden your view about the Universe and your connection to it and how we're all one in the same. If it is God you believe in then by all means believe, but don't take away from the important message in this video for it gives us answers about our Universe and how we are one with it. Stay curious my fellow JEDIS. :D

Being a christian myself, I see this video as further 'proof' of God. 'God made man from the dust of the Earth' (paraphrase) could be an indirect way of saying that man was created from stars, the origination of Earth would be from a star(s) and if man came from the Earth, his 'core' origination, if you will, would be from a star(s).

In the entire history of mankind, when people could not understand something they called upon their God to fill the void of knowledge in order to make sense of things. 20, even 10 years ago, mankind invoked God as an explanation to things they did not understand, yet now, through science's evolution we have answer to those questions. Not just hypotheses, we have answers with proof. Just because we still dont understand things 100% that doesnt mean God made them and it certainly doesnt constitute "proof of God" that is just pure nonsense and is actually ironic as to the very definition of the word "proof". It just means that we still have to further evolve our science to explain things. That is a process that will never stop, new questions will be raised, new answers will be found. If people did not try to explain how things happen, we would still believe that rain and thunder and storms happen because almighty godlike creatures are angry with us.... that was "proof of God" for mankind back then... and now we all know how ridiculous it is...

Science doesn't deal in proof, it deals in evidence. Proven meaning beyond question. Nothing in science is proven. Its supported by evidence. It is true, that there is a lot more we need to learn. Just because nothing is proven, doesn't mean we can't know with any level of certainty. We're pretty certain of evolution. Lots of evidence for it. We're more certain about evolution, then we are about anything else. Its just not beyond scientific question.

What astounds me though is that beyond these little combinations of atoms, are the complex things that can develop from them to do more than the atom can on its own, and have created us feeble beings, that have evolved the power to think abstract thoughts and to imagine concepts beyond the bounds of Reality itself.

The universe is amazing, not only because it is the place that holds us, humans, and possibly millions of other intelligent lifeforms beyond our planetary system, but because of the shear knowledge that we can obtain from the universe. I imagine, millions, maybe even billions of years from now, assuming we don't kill ourselves in the process, we would have put all things aside, (racism, war, crime, etc...) and devote ourselves to science, and exploration, and seeking for more knowledge of the universe we live in.

Neil deGrasse Tyson once said "The Earth holds less importance to the Universe than a grain of sand does to a beach, if you think we are significant, you are wrong". I will always remember this.

While a grain of sand may not hold importance to the short time frame that is our perception, over thousands of years it will have made its difference.

@@GramOzLb Uhh, i disagree. More like a grain of sand may hold importance for a fraction of time, but over thousands of years it will have made no difference. If a grain of sand were to cease to exist. The beach would go on as if it never did.

@@TryABaconSlice If a grain of sand were to cease to exist it would be a scientific miracle. Im pretty confident that matter can not be created nor destroyed for a reason, the grain of sand may change forms but its essence is contingent upon the universe in my opinion, idk how id go about empirically measuring that yet lol

But I agree the beach would look the same to us. and it would be very difficult to weed out the consequences of one single grain relative to those around it and the the friction it imposes on the waves passing over it.
