** This episode was recorded prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike**. Our guest this week is none other than Taylor Momsen (The Pretty Reckless, Gossip Girl). Taylor lets us in on her creative muses, how she's drawn inspiration from the darkest moments of her life, and how she's learned to pick herself up after facing heartbreaking losses. I knew Taylor from back in the day. We were both child actors and I saw her at auditions and a few acting classes. The teacher would often pair us for the mirror exercises. She was so sweet. I saw her a handful of times between 2002-2005. I wasn’t surprised she became a musician because she loved music. I remember when we chatted on AIM, she frequently gave me lists of songs she was listening to and was telling me to check them out. I didn’t see her much after 2006. In 2014, I went and saw her and her band perform at the House of Blues in Dallas. Before the show, I gave the stagehand a note and asked him to give it to Taylor. After the show I went back to the stage hand and he said “Taylor would like to see you”. So I went back stage and saw Taylor and she instantly recognized me. I was so overwhelmed with excitement, and she gave me a big hug. She was still as sweet as I remembered her from back in the day, only thing that was different was she seemed a bit more shy now. But she might have also been a little tired from having just performed or maybe she was overwhelmed by my enthusiasm. Regardless, it was great seeing her again. Nothing but nice things to say about her.

What I loved about this one is Penn and Taylor not seeing each other for 10 years and picking back up like it was yesterday. We all know that feeling I think. Also cool to hear how Taylor perceived her time on GG as a young kid and growing up in almost a different kind of world as all the others who were in their 20’s and kind of understanding the industry a tad more. Seems lonely in a way. But Taylor turned out to be this incredible human regardless of the struggles she’s had to overcome. Love this episode.

I think it’s absolute batshit crazy that a show would allow for a 12 year old kid actor to make out with a 20 year old costar. As an assault scene. What exactly were going through the show runners heads. That’s horrible.

I was dying to see more of Jenny's development, how she was going to rule the school with Blair gone and so on. Now I'm so happy she left and did what she wanted to do. as a taylor fan, this interview was so refreshing because usually she doesn’t get to do a long-form content type of interview, especially where she comes off very comfortable (which I have to thank the hosts!). watching her thrive after a lot of heartache just makes me so happy, because there were times where she was busy that it was hard to be coherent. I remember the s*xist and very s*xualized interviews she had to put up with when she was a teenager trying to find identity and not really getting any affirmations, OUTSIDE of other female-led bands like halestorm (and eventually her own idols). it’s truly been a long time coming, because trust me we were in the TRENCHES when that tampon photo came out & absolutely no one was willing to see how wrong it was because her character became the most hated at the time (like think when she slept with Chuck) and people wanted to discredit her musicality because they thought she was a poser entering the scene. it’s easy for her to be bitter esp with all the hate from all sides, but her still being sweet w/ the perspective that she’s carved out her own path is very cool.

She talks like she is memorizing a script half the time when she does interviews 😂 she repeats the same exact shit in every single interview. That is the actress in her. Memorizing her answers, instead of speaking, truthfully, She never sits down and answers questions from the heart. 99% of the time I can verbatim answer the questions how she is going to answer that because she says the same phrases over and over and over again. Even when she speaks about the death of her friend. She repeats the same exact phrase. “I was on a downward spiral of depression and substance abuse and everything that comes along with grief.” Never changes that exact phrasing. She is to put together and to rehearsed for my taste.

Do you have to comment on every video of hers? EVERY youtube video of her band you mention with negative comments, that's a sign of success and prestige that you feel for her. There's a fine line between hate and love, be careful. Taylor is the real thing, she's a person who has dedicated herself to music and the fact that you think she's rehearsed doesn't change the skills she has as a songwriter, musician and instrumentalist. She's one of the few artists worth paying to hear and still attending a concert in this mainstream shit, go treat yourself, you're a sick obsessive. @@purpledove7008

Taylor Momsen is a goddess of entertainment, she's an incredibly talented musician, a lyricist, my God, I'm glad she went into music... her voice is something phenomenal, one of those that rock music needed. Real music is dying out, she and her band are keeping the torch of old avant-garde music burning, they would have been huge if they had been part of the 60s/70s/80s/90s.

@@milka-eq5hn Elvis Presley had two octaves and that's why he wasn't great or revolutionary? It's not all about range, but representativeness, the rock music genre has been dying out for a few decades now and it's good to see musicians who are really committed to making good music.

Speaking as a vocalist & vocal coach, people don’t realize that multiple parts of the voice are important and usually when you see someone say that about a 2octave range, it’s because their tone is unmatched & something you can’t train to have. That’s sometimes worth more than a voice without texture that has 4-5 octaves 🤷🏼‍♀️ just my take.

I love her music but I do find it funny when people say “they’d do great in the 70s/80s/90s” about bands that are highly inspired/low key derivative of the bands in that time. Its like, “they’d fit in great in those times”.. and yeah! you’re not wrong, they are literally creating music in that style, as if to purposely carry their torch. It’s like saying Greta Van Fleet would do great in the 70s.. lolol yes! 😅 that’s a very reasonable, albeit obvious thing to say since they sound exactly like one of the most popular bands of those times. ~and I’m not laughing in a mean way, btw! it’s just a quirky thing people say without connecting those dots & it gives me a chuckle~

Literally some the most calming and down to earth energy I've felt from someone. I didn't want to trauma dump a death story on her but her newest album had came out on my birthday, I heard rock and roll heaven and immediately sobbed. He was still alive but it reminded me of the inevitable (he was a rockstar too). He passed away 4 months later after telling me since I was six that he wanted to be apart of the 27 club. Then meeting Taylor almost exactly a year later... It felt too divine not to share somewhere

Taylor was a wonderful guest! She seems so down to earth despite starting in the entertainment industry so early and having such a hectic early life. I really get her when she said music was her solace. I think if she didn't have that it would be so much harder for her to stay grounded when that industry makes it so easy for you to go off the rails. I'm really happy she got to do what she was always passionate about. I loved Gossip Girl but I was happy she left even though I really liked how Jenny was like a hurricane because I could tell as great as Taylor was, her heart wasn't in it, and I'd rather she do what she wanted. When i was a teenager watching Gossip Girl, Blair and Jenny, and also Leighton and Taylor were my ultimate style icons. I'd wear Blair inspired preppy outfits in the day and then at night I'd try to do the Taylor looks where I could, with the dark eye make up and leather jacket and fishnets and lingerie inspired dresses. I couldn't find vintage slips anywhere where I was living but Taylor Momsen and Dita von Teese were my inspiration to start collecting vintage.

I’ve been a fan of taylor from the pretty reckless, never really watched the show but always heard from her POV that was just a gig, not her main thing. Music is. It’s all has been. It was nice to see her talk about her childhood, cause she’s so reserved… She didn’t mention, but she was on tour when Cornell killed himself. It was rough for her to see one of her idols die. And then Cato, the one who got TPR together… She’s so strong. She didn’t had to be, but she is. I hope she reads this and I hope to see her show next time she tours in Brazil. I love your work Taylor, you’re awesome!

This was an incredible episode. You all did a wonderful job of welcoming and showcasing Taylor, and it opened up the floor for some really interesting deep discussion and reflection. Nostalgic and new all at once, and I really appreciate the input/flow of Nava and Sophie. Amazing hosts- and TAYLOR, I LOVE YOU! Thank you so much for opening up. I got so much out of this, because i see so much of you in myself, as a creative. Was really helpful as someone in their early 20's hearing from someone that I respect and admire. You're a real, grounded, INCREDIBLE person and somehow have the ability to calm with your presence AND rock the fuck out- THAT'S a WOMAN!

I'm a huge fan of Taylor's!!! I watched every movie and TV show she's been in. I grew up with The pretty reckless and it's still one of my favorite bands. Thank you Taylor for being so open and vulnerable, thank you for all the music you and your band produced!!! I never got a chance to see you yet, and I hope that maybe sometime you'll come to Norway. R.I.P Kato, you'll always be in our hearts!!!

I don't know anything about GG but I have VERY strong opinions about child actors and the way the industry/parents/media/etc treat them. I read a bit of her other interviews after watching this and all I can say is that I feel so much sympathy for her. She's definitely held back a lot of her feelings and thoughts about what she went through as a child actress. I'm really glad she was able to pull herself out of all that nastiness and continue on with her chosen path in life. I hope she's doing well ❤
