This would get more views if Tony posted it to his channel. Why not make a couple of sponsored videos over there? Criterion/Filmstruck deserves more attention and that channel would be the perfect place to advertise a streaming service for hardcore film addicts.

Curtiz is so underrated. A true virtuoso. And for my money the most diverse director in cinematic history. He could do it all; Westerns ("Dodge City"), gangster pics ("Angels with Dirty Faces"), musicals ("Yankee Doodle Dandy"), romance ("Casablanca"), character studies ("Mildred Pierce"), and swashbucklers ("The Sea Wolf"). If the documentary had been a more established medium during his lifetime, I'm sure he would have crushed that too.

Michael Curtiz! God, I wish Bogdanovich had been able to interview him like the other masters. Died too soon.

Wow! All these comments glorifying Tony WHO? Not a single comment about the film. Let alone the fact that this is a Hemingway adaptation. Plus this meretricious commentary. All it does is state the obvious stuff in a miss-en-scene 101 freeze frame(*you're probably wondering how i got here*) analysis. Everybody knows this, except my Grandma who doesn't need to know this. WTF is going on Criterion? Where are the real people? I'd settle for Michael Bay at this point. Please don't disrespect Michael Curtiz's legacy with desktop opinion generators. Get a professional. TL;DR- Please hire reputed filmmaking professionals for commentary. Show some respect.

@alexalexis78997 жыл бұрын
+Sahil Manhas It's always a relieve when you find someone else that shares your point of view. It's depressing, confusing and worrying to see hordes of people taking what they see on youtube as cannon, especially when they are celebrating and promoting content that is as basic as it gets - it's extensively covered in entry level filmmaking books. "Oh, but reading is such a last century activity; takes way too much time to learn something I can learn in under an hour watching youtube videos". Much like illusionism, I think filmmaking should have a code of ethics where knowledge is not readily available everywhere. Because it's so in fashion to be a "filmmaker" (and yes, I put that between inverted commas because 90% of the younger generation is simply pointing the camera at stuff and editing in cool ways), those that really, truly want to devote their lives to filmmaking and try to create cinema, should have to dig for their knowledge; dig for the right books, dig for all those instrumental movies and practice. For the record, I am in fact NOT throwing shade at Tony - out of the unbearable deluge of cinema essays that are floating around, I can only think of two channels that seemingly present valid content, and Tony is one of them. That's the other thing - you can immediately feel when the person knows what they're talking about or not. It is, however, troubling that hordes of people take what they see on these channels as cannon... I mean... I like astronomy; a lot. I could very well make an essay about a given aspect of astronomy, but people would be fools to take what I say as cannon, regardless of how sound my arguments are; I have no education on the subject matter and have no experience that validates my understanding of astronomy. I am but a dilettante in this field. Same goes for all these experts in cinema and filmmaking. 90% of their experience is watching movies and youtube. They have no relevant set experience to speak of, beside backyard filmmaking with they friends. That is not enough to get people to listen to what you have to say about a given film or filmmaker. What would be interesting - and absolutely valid information - is if they made essays ABOUT THEIR OWN WORKS. If they took a scene from one of their films and deconstructed it, applying not only the theoretical knowledge they proudly flaunt but also - and much more important when it comes to filmmaking - the practical knowledge as well. People musing about films they had nothing to do with can only go so far - reverse-engineering a movie or scene to find the exact thought process that generated it is impossible - but talking about the result of YOUR decisions and thought process... now that's interesting.
