Hey yah 👋🏽👋🏽 So I just wanted to further clarify my interpretation as it pertains to the "alcoholism" part of my reaction. There were many lines in the song that were included to give this song (in my belief and POV) a double meaning. I truly believe that music is up for interpretation just like any art form. Specific words were chosen in the lyrics to bring up different thoughts. No one is right or wrong. Here are the lyrics below: "Champagne Problems" "Your sister splashed out on the bottle" "Dom Pérignon, you brought it" Couple that with the events taking place in the song. The way that the town, family, friends, etc. were reacting to her ("fucked in the head)" ,as well as the way she described herself "mad house", etc. That all lend me to interpret the song the way I did. Anyways, Thank u for watching and supporting my video. I really appreciate all of the love and support 💕🙏🏽

"Alcoholism" was the first thing I thought when i first heard the song, mainly because of the "what a shame she's fucked in the head" line. Then i learned about the expression's other meaning. I guess both apply. And, when you think about it, it's actually more heart breaking that he was willing to marry someone with alcohol problems and was turned down...

That’s actually how I interpreted this song. This poor woman has issues and she realizes it and can’t be the person he needs. It screams mental health issue and paints her as having “champagne problems”. She admits that someone else will make him happy and she will only be remembered to him as that woman with drinking problems. It’s self realization and that honest self reflection is beautiful. It’s about this poor heart broken man, but I can’t help but feel sympathy for her. I LOVE this song.

"𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐬" is about a man proposing to a woman who has problems with herself and thinks that she isn't the one meant for him because she sees herself as "damaged" by her mind. It talks about that she denied the proposal with the thought that he deserves more, and that he deserves someone that won't damage him like she would if she accepted that proposal. There is literally a line that says that "she's fucked in the head", which clearly says that the woman in the song has some sort of mental problem and they label it champagne problems as sometimes signs of a mental problem can be observed in people that have alcholism. Anyways, I love your reaction but I will always think that the girl in the song wasn't at fault, she just saved him from the pain that he might feel if she accepts the proposal.

ALSO "she'll patch up the tapestry that I shred" means that she (girl in the song) 100% knows that there's someone *better* FOR HIM out there. I completely agree that she was saving him from future pain

I would compare this a bit like Jenny and Forrest Gump beacuse she had the same reason to not marry him until the end because she thought that she didn't deserve him and that he was to good for her just like in this song she sings about her picture in his wallet and his "mothers" ring. It is all examples of the perfect guy.

She's been writing her own songs since she was 11 or 12 :) hasn't stopped ever since. The melodies are also by her. And her vision of whatever production she wants sje lets her producers know. She also directed some of her music videos. Including willow. She researches and reaches out to producers, music film producers she wants. I dont know how she does it. Shes THE goat.

Taylor is Lady Shakespeare, a modern-day poet with the sharpest sword of a pen. Her music cuts deep and it has carried me through so much over the last 14 years. At this point, those who are still hating on Taylor need to check their internalized misogyny and acquire some damn taste for the written word. Thank you for this reaction, loved it and subscribed! ❤️

i love how she says "midas touch on a chevey door" to say that their touch turned things to gold in a way or saying it turned something so simple into something so grand. the one about the mad house is a reference to her song, mad woman, in folklore. Also the line "she'll patch up the tapestry that i shred" is that the person will find another girl who will "patch up" their heart in a way. The girl in the song didn't want to break his heart but has well wishes for the guy and hopes he'll find someone else

Actually, she is the primary writer on ALL her songs. She co-wrote this one with her bf Joe Alwyn (she confirmed that "William Bowery" was a pseudonym). He also wrote 2 songs on folklore and 2 other songs on evermore along with playing piano on the title track (evermore).

1) you should react to "Taylor Swift being songwriting genius for 13 minutes straight". It's a compilation of clips of Taylor coming up with some of her songs. She wrote most of her songs; when she first started, she got accused of not actually writing her songs and relying on her co-writers, so she went ahead and wrote a whole album by herself without any cowriter (Speak Now album). 2) The most popular interpretation of Champagne Problems is that she doesn't have any reason to reject the proposal, the guy is too perfect, yet she doesn't feel right. She might even feel inadequate for him, considering how everyone around her was mocking her. She doesn't have a solid reason to reject him, so she blames it on "champagne problems" which could refer to a first-world problem, things you'd usually think it's not a real problem, or it's the rich people's problem. It could be interpreted as alcoholism as well, but it's not really the first thing came to our heads because Taylor has a history of using references and metaphors of drugs and alcohol to love and emotional addiction (songs like "Don't Blame Me" and "Clean" are some of those songs), so we never really think of "champagne problems" as a literal thing. 3) Fun Fact! She wrote this with the cowriter William Bowery, which was confirmed that was a pseudonym to her boyfriend, Joe Alwyn. Taylor said she and her boyfriend love sad songs. "William Bowery" also wrote some other songs on both 'evermore' and her previous album 'folklore'.

I think this long is linked to Dorthea and 'tis the damn season. She described Champagne Problems as about " longtime college sweethearts had very different plans for the same night, one to end it and one who brought a ring." And Dorthea/ ' 'tis the damn season as about " A girl who left her small town to chase down her dreams- and what happens when she comes back for the holidays and rediscovers a old flame." The song gives off old time vintage vibes. Champange used to be a beverage that only rich and famous people could afford. So I see champagne problems as about a girl who said no to a marriage proposal because she wanted to move to LA to chase her dream and didn't want to be tied down by marriage. People think she is "fucked in the head" because they see her as vain/ naive because she wants to become rich and famous/ would choose that over being married to a man she loves. I could be wrong but I think it works. (but as you said, It’s up for interpretation) If people prefer to see it another way because it fits the story they want it to convey that is also valid.
@CommonCommenter

I love your interpretation. I do get the impression that she is consoling him that he find someone better rather than her realizing that he moved on from her. Like, she hoped he would cause she knew they weren't right for each other in the long run. She understood herself, and knew she wasn't in the right place to get married. As if, it would be doing him a disservice.

Your reaction was by far most reasonable and true of this song. She does has a problem with alcoholism and the town people are also skeptic about her. So she being under the pressure of her problem and the thoughts of other people, breaks off the relationship with that man before he even proposes her and thinks that he deserves better than her.

I also see the narrator of the song as choosing to ultimately reject her lover in order to do the altruistic, and kind thing to save them from all of the pain and problems that she thinks her mental illness or "champagne problems" will end up causing. She is doing the hard but right thing by being the bad guy and saying "No" so that he will be free to find happiness and love with someone better that he deserves. Right or wrong, she is trying to do good. So Many people with health problems of all kinds, choose to push people and loved ones away in order to try and protect them from pain.

I’m never concerned about the mans feelings lol I’m a black feminist. I did however address the fragile ego of men and how they expect a “Yes” when being proposed to. My reaction was just me being funny. I did conclude that portion saying that as women we have to do what’s best for us regardless and as men, they should be expected either a yes or a no.

Not a native eng speaker but i never relate Champagne Problems as alcoholism.. for me its more like a celebratory problem or a problem that shud be celebrated bcos eventho the guy got his heart broken by the narrator he's still lucky, he'll find a better woman who'd never do what the narrator (taylor) did to him.. like she'll never drop his hand, nor leave him standing, and that she'll patch the tapestry that "taylor" shred.

Great reaction! Yeah, I think it's definitely the best song on the album. The production is beautiful. The lyrics and story are brilliant. What's funny is that the co - writer you mentioned is actually her boyfriend, Joe. He's co - written a few songs with her on her past two albums, under a pseudonym. They've been together for 4 years, and she explained that they both just love sad songs! She writes all her own lyrics. Often she'll have one or two other writers credited in addition to herself, but about 40% of her music she's written solo. She's one of the best songwriters out there today.

Love your interpretation. What I understood from the phrase "Champagne Problem" is like "Rich people problems" because I couldn't get the phrase "Champagne taste with a beer budget" out of my head.

champagne problems in this case has two meanings. firstly the one you mentioned and secondly alcohol problems .. thats why people call her fucked in the head and thats why at the end she says “you wont remember my champagne problems” which makes more sense as in my alcohol problems than my rich ppl problems but the other parts of the song are indeed about rich people problems

I love when you talked about how sometimes someone will say yes when being proposed to when they don’t really want to... that actually happened to my best friend, he proposed to her in a place she said she NEVER wanted to be proposed to after she tried talking to him about how he hasn’t been treating her equally and he brushed off her concerns. She said yes because he proposed in public and didn’t want to embarrass him but this song makes me think of that moment. Lol I always see people say what a sad song but this song makes me fucking angry thinking about my friend lmao

I actually agree with you that the girl could possibly alcoholic resulting for her to tag this dilemma as champagne problems. Aside from it being "top of the line" problems. Like when you are single and you have single person issues, you call it "single problems". Anyways more subscribers for you. I did enjoyed the reaction. 😌👌💯

i highly recommend checking out a cover of this song, champagne problems 1989 version. while it’s obviously the same lyrics, the way the song is brought out almost brings another meaning, or at least helps you understand it differently. edit: this article actually helped break it down pretty good. www.distractify.com/p/champagne-problems-meaning

100% Taylor is underrated, and it is sad that people over look her as some teen age girl pop star lacking depth. Anyone who honestly listens to Taylors muse, it instantly is clear she ahs a unique and brilliant voice, it isn't just her talent in singing, or her looks, it really is that she can paint such amazing stories with so few words, she is one in a billion...
