I love that you drew a parallel between the red scarf and her girlhood in 'WCS'. Two separate relationships, but Jake and John BOTH took advantage of her youth at the time and essentially robbed her of her innocence as a young woman. I think this is the song that makes everyone go "I'm a swiftie" officially hahahahah It's about Jake Gyllenhaal- and yes, he really didn't show up to her 21st birthday lol. The whole Red album is about their relationship, the good and bad, chronologically, except for the last couple tracks- which are 8 months later, about the beginning of the next relationship after this which wasn't honestly too serious but helped her heal from this one a lot lol. WELCOME TO THE FAMILY. I'm sure plenty of people have told you it was about Jake Gyllenhaal lol but in contrast to John Mayer, the other famously bad relationship she's had, I get the vibe that Jake wasn't like, actively abusive or predatory to her, just that they were mismatched. The age gap didn't HELP the mismatch but didn't necessarily cause it, either. I'm not out for Jake's fucking blood like I am John's after Dear John and Would've Could've Should've. Also, kind of an adorable fact: the main song widely believed to be about Taylor Lautner (who she was with when they were both quite young and it kinda seemed like a puppy love thing) is Back To December which is basically just "I'm sorry, I screwed up, I wish I could take back the way I hurt you" and she's now good friends with him and his wife, so men who don't do anything actively shitty to her seem to come out okay. There's a quote from her somewhere like "I sing about how people have made me feel and how they've treated me, so if someone is not happy about the way I sing about them, maybe that says something about how they treated me."
