I remember some interview she did where she talked about how after her scandal she fell into a deep depression and she would write all these letters and think pieces that she knew she would never send. And it was meeting Joe (aka william bowery) that helped her to really begin to heal again. So thats what I get from this song. And you're 100% right, I already cried to this in the dark lmao. I love how you take the time to really listen to the lyrics! You should really check out Exile from her Folklore album which is also a duet she did with Bon Iver. He usually sings in falsetto like he does in this song, but in Exile he uses a much lower rich baritone register which really gives you the feels

Hadn't seen your channel before. 💝💝 "Catching my death" is an older expression for catching a cold. It is "grey November" (raining) and she is staring out an "open window". . . . .long enough to remember? iow, her misery is leading to her being physically sick. November rains are COLD af, and the damp cuts through everything, you are literally freezing regardless of the temp. Justin Vernon is such a treasure. If you like this song, I’d suggest listening to some of his older stuff from the album For Emma, Forever Ago. Skinny Love is a great place to start if not the song For Emma. I really do like these last two albums from Swift. I think she is much better using her lower register. This pocket she has found herself in on this back to back release has played so well to her strength. And one small thing, Bon Iver is pronounced like bone evaire. Misspelling of a French phrase meaning “have a nice winter.” Love the review!

She recently did an interview (the apple one) and said that she wrote the lyrics before the presidential election... so it's all a metaphore for the hopelessness we were all feeling at the thought of Trump winning the election. How tired we felt, the disconnect. Thinking where we went wrong as a society, and thinking that this pain (politics, racial injustice, corona) would be for evermore. The image of standing on a balcony during a blizzard, ready to die. But then there's hope. She then tied it in with her personal struggle with depression following the Kanye drama and all the hate she got. Then Bon Iver added his verse. AND ONLY THEN she added a few lines to tie it all in and make it a love story of sorts. WOW, only WOW

This song was one of my fave from this album as well as ivy, gold rush, and happiness. I actually enjoyed folklore the previous album more. The 1, seven, august, invisible string, peace, and hoax were standouts for me. I think this song was about the whole Kim Kanye drama and how she was able to find solace with her boyfriend Joe as she got through her reputation being killed and people hating her. The lyrics says “she’s been down since July”, which is when Kim released the snippet of the leaked video of that phone call of her being illegally recorded on the phone, hence the lyrics “motion captured put me in a bad light.” Throughout the drama with Kanye, she earnestly tried to be on good terms with him and in the end it costed her everything (“sending signals to be double crossed”) and she thought her career was over from the hate. Her hiding out with her new boyfriend and disappearing from the spotlight for two years made her feel like there was someone who cared for her even when everyone hated her. So he was in the relationship for her and not her status. And in the end she was able to get out of the darkness and find a shred of light to be happy about with him and put behind the drama that felt like it had taken over her life.

I like your reactions. I think you are from LA. I grew up in a winter climate and my mom had a saying when I would go out unprepared for the the cold, “ you will catch your death” . In other words put on your coat and mittens and scarf, don’t go out unprepared. It is up to us as listeners to decide how to interpret the lyrics but I saw it as her letting the cold air in metaphorically. Keep up the good work.

Wondering if you are going to do a Fearless Taylor's Version reaction. I don't like Country Music in general, and I had only listened to the album once before and hated it. In fact, its been my least favorite of all her albums. But, I gave this new Fearless a good listen and now I love it. I think these new mature vocals did it for me, plus the idea of a 31 yr old singing to her 18 yr old self all these things she wrote about, thinking about, hoping for, but now she has lived and achieved, and succeeded, and persevered. Some of the lyrics, although written as a teenager, take on a bigger meaning now knowing what we know now, and what she knows now. I love the album now. I don't like Country music. But, I really liked this Taylor's version. Think you should take a listen. Also a comparison of how far she has come as an artist in her career, ever evolving and growing.
