Favorite is the first line "Is it romantic how all my elegies eulogize me?" because an Elegy and a Eulogy are two different things. An Elegy looks back at a situation from the perspective of the writer in a sad way, wheras a Eulogy looks back at something with happiness from an outsider's perspective. So she's saying all the sad poems she writes about herself are remembered by her fans with praise.

This song is definitely about her semi-retirement with Joe to Lake District of UK, where all the poets of the Romantic era used to go, hence she mentions William Wordsworth. She dreams of this utopia where no one follows her and she can take in and feel alive with her lover. This was around the time of her cancelation period and that's why she's happy being able to escape to some place calm. She really just reminisces of living in the moment in this songs. Idk why but the second I heard this song it was my favorite and its definitely up there with All Too Well as the contenders for her best song.
@edensylvester134 жыл бұрын
It wasn't around her cancellation, it was their "three-year trip" as she says in invisible string so last September, which is why she's upset about her masters in the second verse

Okay so the lakes is a reference to the lake district in the UK. She talks about the Windermere peaks which is a town in the lake district. When she uses Wordsworth its a double meaning as wordsworth is a English poet. The reference to the red rose with no one around to tweet it is a take on "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?. Also the lakes is referenced in invisible string when she had lunch down by the lake.

The lakes is a masterpiece and Taylor Swift's ode to the Romantic poets (read some of William Wordsworth's poems, such as Daffodills, and I think they have a very similar tone to the lakes lyrically!) I visited the Lake District last year and it is honestly the most stunning place I have ever been. It feels so remote and far away from the rest of the world. The mountains are so tall they made me feel small and humbled me so much. I can totally understand why Taylor wants to just stay there forever, away from all the crap she's dealt with, and just enjoy being there. I think the way she links herself with Wordsworth is really interesting - Wordsworth lived in the Lake District in later life and eventually died there. He experienced the loss of several children, and you could say that Taylor losing her masters was like her losing her children, the things she'd created. It's also worth looking up William's sister, Dororthy Wordsworth, who was a poet and diarist but had no interest in becoming famous or well-known. She never married, but lived with her brother in the Lake District. I think you can make an interesting comparison between the two, in Taylor's eyes - maybe she sometimes wishes she was more like Dororthy (still made art but was less ambitious) Either way, I think this song has so much to unpack, I have listened to it so many times and love it even more every time! It also makes so much sense after hoax!!
@queenfreddie8614 жыл бұрын
i think the lyric “i don’t belong here and my beloved neither do you” is signifying taylor realising she doesn’t want to be as famous as she was, and she doesn’t want to force joe into that world. i think she wants protects him, and break up with. but he’s all in, so she wants to hide and get away from it all
@edensylvester134 жыл бұрын
yeah :( the same fears from DWOHT, The Archer, etc. but it seems like this time she knows they're both committed to each other, she just wants to get away from everything else. I wish she could, it seems impossible at this point

Honestly I cannot get through the Folklore album without absolutely falling apart. This album is sad, beautiful, tragic. I feel like Folklore is The grand finale in a fireworks show. The coolest show had been happening for a while. The best moment is saved for last, right before it’s all over and it’s time to stop and go home. I think this was Taylor‘s way of telling us that she’s been through way too much to continue the life that she was living, that now all she wants to do is settle down and make children with the love she had been waiting for. If you look back all the way to her RED album there’s a song called The Lucky One. It describes the toll that fame can take on a person. That in the end the true lucky one is the person who knew when it was time to take your money and dignity and get the hell out. Having her masters sold from underneath her was the last straw. If people notice this album was a surprise. She saved The Lakes for last. Also she has been dropping a whole lot of merch lately. This completely feels like a goodbye hug. I’m so proud of her words can’t express. This album may not be completely autobiographical but even in the stories that she weaves throughout have something closely tied to her. Sadly I would not be surprised if this is her last album for a while. The next time she comes out with something she could be married and raising children In England.
@edensylvester134 жыл бұрын
Especially since she'll be rerecording soon, I don't expect more new music for a long time. This might be a good time for her to settle down and have a kid since like she said in Miss Americana her life is too planned ahead for her to feel ready for that, but with everything on pause right now it might be good for her, although she'd still have to find a balance between raising a kid and her work
@vivianl.89004 жыл бұрын
omg, no new Taylor music. I might die. But I'll just keep replaying all the other 8 albums, I'll be fine. Honestly, I really hope she's happy, and she knows that we'll be waiting for when she drops new music, no matter how long it takes.

The Lakes seems to me to be a kind of sequel to Hoax (this has frozen my ground/a red rose grew up out of ice frozen ground) and My Tears Ricochet, even a slight callback to Rep. There's the reference to the masters issue/Scooter with "I've come too far to watch some name-dropping sleaze/Tell me what are my words worth" but also the intense scrutiny of her life and her fears that would disrupt any relationship she'll have ("I'm not cut out for all these cynical clones/These hunters with cellphones). Her and Joe went to the Lake District in the UK for their 3 year anniversary (mentioned in Invisible String), which is where the Windermere Peaks are, so this song feels almost like Call it What You Want in that it's an ode to the good of their relationship that came in a very difficult time, but this time a bit sadder.

@hallie19894 жыл бұрын
Oooh yes! I didn’t even think about how hoax says “this has frozen my ground” that works perfectly. I was just thinking it symbolized joe and Taylor’s relationship blooming out of the time when Taylor’s heart had basically frozen over from what had been done to her from Scott, scooter and kimye and the whole cancel culture. Which I guess is right😂- but I’m glad you pointed that lyric out!! It makes even more sense now👏🏼

The Lakes is the reference to the Lake District in the UK. There are beautiful lakes - Windermere ( that is name checked in the song ) ‘where the poets went to die’ is a reference to the place where the romantic British poets lived ( in the Lake District area ). Some of these poets were : William Wordsworth - who is also namechecked in the lyric video spellt in capital letter ( ‘ tell me what are my Wordsworth ‘ - this could also mean the worth of words ). My favorite lyric is : ‘ A red rose grew up out of ice frozen ground with no one around to tweet it...’ In my opinion a red rose 🌹 symbolizes Taylor’s love for Joe and this beautiful thing grew up out of hard times Taylor had to fo through in 2016 ( i e frozen ground ). And this love is a private one ( with no one around to tweet it ). And there are many many more symbols in this gorgeous song. Thank you for sharing your reaction to it. 🌹

This song is so different from anything Taylor has ever done before. From the 1940s Disney classic musical arrangement, to the picture painting poetic lyrics. Not to forget how this song literally sounds like a one take because her vocals are so goddamn pure and upfront, literally the low notes she hits almost break. I seriously don't understand how some people still call her mainstream and overrated.

When she says she’s not cut out for all the cynical clones and hunters w cell phones, take me to the lake, but not without my muse- I think she is saying that she wants to get away from the media and just live her life alone and be happy, with joe. Ok I’m not from England, but what I’ve heard is that the Windermere peaks reference is part of The Lake District which is a location in England where a group of poets lived at one point. Also the lakes is referenced in invisible string- talking about visiting there on a three year trip. What is still burrowed under her skin is how Scott B backstabbed her. I think she is really hurt bc she trusted him and had a close relationship w him (this is just me theorizing tho😂) But when she says she’s come too far to watch some name dropping sleaze tell her what are her words worth is def talking about scooter. Bc of his post bragging about how he bought Taylor for $300M. (It’s also a play on word referencing the 19th century poet William Wordsworth). I def think the red rose growing out of ice frozen ground is Taylor and Joes relationship. Bc at the time Taylor was dealing w so much drama and somehow she found love in all of that. And they kept their relationship hidden from everyone. I.E. no one was around to tweet it. I’m so sorry that was so long🥵

This song hits me hard today. She moved to the UK to be with her Lover and so did I. We were supposed to go the the lakes, the exact same. We were planning it before Folklore dropped, cause it's not that far from home. Yesterday we had a huge argument, and we didn't event want to look at each other. I left the house, went on a walk to the place that reminds me of the lakes, flowers and trees all the way around, rabbits and sometimes even people on horses. Total silence and rain. I was crying deeply there. The beauty of nature, it's so strong and peaceful. We all have our own private storms and earthquakes. We find happiness depending on 'how the wind blows'. And the lakes stay still in silence. They can't be hurt easily.
