"I fell from the pedestal, right down the rabbit hole, long story short it was a bad time" refers to her downfall in the media - something really clever she did here was reference a song from her 1989 album called Wonderland which has a lyric "fell down a rabbit hole" to orient us in the timeline of her career (and of course having a double meaning of falling down a rabbit hole of reading bad press or falling into depression depending on your interpretation) because that was the last album she released before she disappeared from the public eye (and then later returned and released Reputation). And "long story short it was the wrong guy" refers to Tom Hiddleston (not a bad guy, just not the right one for her) who she dated right before Joe as kind of a rebound/escape from her relationship with Calvin Harris. Definitely recommend listening to Wonderland just because it's excellent and also Getaway Car which is a song about Tom Hiddleston after you finish Evermore.

The wrong guy is Tom Hiddleston, but not a "bad" guy. There is a song about their brief relationship called Getaway Car. Essentially he was her rebound relationship when she was at her lowest time with being attacked by the media and accused of being a bad person, long story short, it was a bad time. I still feel bad for him though, he looked like he liked her quite a lot. But both have since moved on respectfully.

The lyrics are what makes her songs so special for me. There are so many meanings. She changes the bridges and the chorus nearly every time. You have to take your time with these songs. They aren't for a short consumption. I think that it's impossible to get everything by first even second and third listen. Like you said there is so much going on. Long Story Short is a (short) summery of her life from 2016 to now. I really like it. It sounds very self reflective and grown up to me. I was surprised how fast you noticed that this song is about her personal life. :)

She used another getaway car (which is she herself alone) to leave Tom as well. To relate it to this song, Tom Hiddleston was the "wrong guy" she mentioned in the chorus. I feel like this song is so wordy. I really like the melody but it doesn’t really fit with the lyrics. I’m a huge fan of her pop songs (reputation is my favourite album of hers) but her “pop” songs in these albums are a hit or miss. I didn’t like Gold Rush for one because it was too repetitive and the beat didn’t carry it enough.
