Jimmy actually said during this show his mom passed away. He was reminiscing about how he used to squeeze his mom's hand three times to tell her he loved her. I believe she played this song because she has the line about squeezing someones hand three times, she played it for him. The hug at the end just makes me sad, she was comforting him.

It was actually a coincidence. He asked her to play anything she wanted and she chose this song. She didn’t have any way of knowing that story about his mom before she chose it because she would have had to chosen it in advance so that the band could rehearse it. Jimmy and his crew actually thought maybe she had changed the lyrics to add that in after she heard his story.

for me this song is giving vibes like it's not really about who you are kissing at midnight, it's about with whom you are picking up bottles and cleaning after party on new years day. It's not really about people with whom you just have fun, it's about the people who stay I think i read this interpretation somewhere and it really struck a chord with me, its a really really beautiful song❤

Some people are saying Taylor sang this specifically because Jimmy used to squeeze his mom's hand 3 times, but she didn't. She had no idea about it and he had no idea about her lyrics. It was a beautiful coincidence which made Jimmy and everyone in the studio cry when they heard Taylor's line. ❤️

You need to Go back and watch the episode leading up to this performance. Jimmy is not happy in this video, he’s crying. He had been talking about his mom who passed away, talked about squeezing his hand 3 times when he was a kid, and when she died he squeezed her hand 3x. Taylor was a surprise guest, I believe she was in town for SNL and his team asked her to stop by and she did, without question or hesitation, completely unplanned. The song she coincidentally sings about squeezing her hand 3x, Jimmy loses it. He has broken down at this point off camera. At the end, he is crying while hugging Taylor. That is why she chose that song, hold on to the memories, that’s why she is somber. She didn’t go on the show to promote REP or this song, it was completely unplanned event and a surprise for Jimmy.

This was Jimmy's first show back after his mums passed. Nick Jonas was meant to be on that night but then Taylor was asked to perform & it's so crazy how she did that song & at the start of the show Jimmy talked before about his mum grabbing his hand to make sure he was okay You say at the start that Jimmy is always happy well at the start of the show he's crying. Was such an amazing story & talk about his mum.

Nice choice and Happy New Year Taylor was there to perform on SNL. Jimmy was just restarting after taking a break cos his mum died. Asked Taylor to step in and perform. Earlier in the show jimmy was talking about his mum and how she squeezed his hand 3 times to say she loved him. Then Taylor sang that lyric and about memories being kept. Jimmy in tears....

Jimmy's mom just died and he told a story that her mom would squeeze his hand at the back of the taxi. Taylor was in town that time so Jimmy invited her as a surprise guest. No one knew what New Year's Day was all about, and when she sang the "squeeze my hand 3 times at the back of the taxi" part, they thought she changed the lyrics for Jimmy. The producer tweeted the whole room was balling. Seemed like Jimmy's mom was sending him comfort through Taylor.

Unscripted though was how in the same show, moments before, Jimmy told a story of him and his mom and how to say I Love You, they would squeeze each other's hands 3 times and how on her deathbed, he squeezed her hand three times to show her he loved her. So when Taylor sang, "Squeeze my hand three times in the back of the taxi" everyone broke down. Staff said Jimmy was wiping his eyes at his desk.

The first was Taylor's Daylight because that's how I want to view this year after being hurt last year. The second was this song.
