As a kid and teenager and young adult I was super into space, and I found it really cool and I wanted to go to space. Five years of studying a master's degree in satellite engineering later, I can confidently say that space is really difficult to get to, really difficult to survive in, highly dangerous, and actually pretty boring on a human level, whereas the planet we live on is frigging amazing and in dire need of saving, or else our species won't even be around long enough to try to seriously colonise Mars or anywhere else. Yeah, travelling the galaxy in hyperdrive ships sounds sweet and all, but so does being a wizard or a superhero. None of those things are actually plausible in our lifetimes, if ever. It sucks that reality is so unsympathetic to childhood fantasy, but any fully grown man still wanting to go to space is pretty much no different from a fully grown man still wanting to be a wizard or wanting to be the Flash.

@@myplatinumlife I mean if there was a spare ticket on a space tourism flight to see the earth from orbit then that would be cool, but beyond that if I want to be confined inside a metal capsule with limited air and nothing much to look at then submarines exist, are much cheaper, and at least you might get to see a fish. I'm all in favour of astronomy and scientific exploration of our solar system but there is way more unexplored life on Earth than could ever be found in space in our lifetimes, and a lot of that unexplored terrestrial and aquatic life will be extinct in the next couple of decades so I think that should probaby be a higher priority than spamming earth's orbit with hundreds of Musks satellites just to slightly improve internet coverage so that he can cosplay at going to Mars some day.

I get it: a woman like Olivia Rodrigo PROBABLY needs a guy who is willing to spend his entire life devoted only to her. He can't have aspirations that exclude her. For people who are not as self-centered, the question might not be quite as applicable. I'm not just talking about Olivia who seems like a relatively nice person. I'm talking about celebrities in general who thrive on external validation. They can't be with a person with their own goals and aspirations. They need someone who has nothing and is 100% devoted to them. That is why celebrities, despite their charisma and wealth and opportunities get divorced more than average.

@Barrel4336Ай бұрын
@@eastvandb I occasionally do in other scenarios, but not in this one. The endless expanse of space is pure wonder. The question of life being unique to Earth, the various unknown environments of other planets, the thought of going there and learning of a vastly different place to share with the rest of humanity. These are important drivers for many of the decisions I have made in life. This driving curiosity is the same reason that I will go to deserts, mountains, sail the ocean, and find beauty in an unknown iridescent beetle walking across my path. Why I love to consider the long extreme age of the Redwood Forests and the unfathomable terror of the deep ocean in the same way. These are things to stand for and be proud of, these are things I truly believe makes us as humans more "Us". It is as binding to the human experience as the hum of a drumbeat and the emotional flavor of a nostalgic dish.

Yes space. But like real space. Not the SpaceX Virgin Galactic "almost space" bullshit.
@donjones4719Ай бұрын
Are you trying to make me bang my head against the wall? Virgin Galactic has the "almost space" spaceplane. Blue Origin has the "moment in space" capsule. SpaceX has the Dragon spacecraft, the one that's taken ~40 people to orbit, including people from Europe, Russia, the Middle East, and Japan. And those are the ones sent by their nations to the international Space Station to work for 6 months, not a brief joyride. Differences are important. Am I an Elon Musk fanboy? No. Am I enthusiastic about space exploration? Yes.
@omerpockard7212Ай бұрын
Elon Musk also went on an almost/barely space flight. Just because SpaceX does true flights doesn't mean they don't do stupid stunts. Meanwhile, not enough people know about millionaire Dennis Tito, who paid his way into a 6 day trip on the ISS in 2002 (plus another day traveling back and forth).
