It's nice to see someone my age that I feel like I can relate to more talk about these things :) For cash, I usually carry around a bit (mostly to exchange it into laundry quarters haha), and yeps I keep around 6 months of expenses in my emergency fund, but have more liquid assets (like SPY and stocks) available should I need it

1. I carry cash ALWAYS, especially because I'm a reseller like you. I have two different spots in my wallet for business cash purchases and personal cash purchases. 2. Emergency Fund - always 3-6 months in somewhat liquid assets - as in I can take out within a week. I used to keep much more in just savings and checking, but realized that in this day and age, you can get to most of your other funds within a week.
@TaylorBell3 жыл бұрын
Very smart to keep your business and personal cash separated! I feel like compartmentalizing the two is super important, and not just for tax reasons 😂 And very nice for your emergency fund. Money talk! Love it. I think you have a great strategy set up for your money and really like the idea of setting money in a high yield savings account for specific purposes, like travel. I personally don't keep cash on hand very often, sometimes I wish I did for that rare occurrence its needed. I'm just too lazy to go to the bank and get some out and too cheap to pay ATM fees lol. The only time I have cash on hand is when my Grandma sends me some in a card for my birthday. Yes, I have an emergency fund. Especially for right before my transition from tax accountant to reseller. I'm pretty good at making my money stretch for as long as I need to (aka holding back on spending for anything but necessities). I don't look at my emergency fund in terms of months of expenses but rather, how much do I want to have readily available to feel comfortable should any situation occur.
@TaylorBell3 жыл бұрын
Thaaank you Macy!! Always love an accountant's stamp of approval ;) And yep same here with cash-- I want to start carrying $20 or so for gas or other emergencies, but I always forget lol. And very smart with your emergency fund, I think that's a great way to look at it. Great plan to save up before you made the career switch, I'm sure that was a scary jump to go from having a steady income stream to an unpredictable one (even though you enjoy reselling so much, ofc)!!

Very solid video on personal finance. I will sometimes carry cash around, but not at all times. I also have a lot of my money invested into multiple accounts such as two brokerages, one active mutual fund, and a Roth IRA and 401K. I have a little ways to go though since I have been working hard to pay off my credit card debt and student loans. I know that I can pay off my credit card debt 100% this year and I don't have much of an emergency fund yet, so I am trying to build that up as well this year.

Hi. First , your advice was spot on. Since we've touched on your move to NYC, thought I'd use that as a real world example as to why you should always have some cash on hand. One word "blackout". Lived through the blackout in NYC and guess what 2 things were basically useless; debit and credit cards. So on that day the only folks who could buy anything were those folks with cash. Also agree that you should have some local currency when travelling. In part due to the example above plus as you correctly noted some countries ( especially in Europe) are still cash driven. Just like you I would go out for dinner or drinks and several businesses only wanted cash. Plus occasionally if you use smaller banks, ATM's abroad could be hit or miss. Had this problem in Tokyo. Everything is sound advise. Let us what high yield accounts you find. Currently use them but none are near 1%.
@TaylorBell3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Lou!! Glad to hear you agree with these points, and SO true that the cash situation definitely varies a lot in other countries. Woah, yep that blackout was probably a big wake up call to a LOT of people to keep some cash on hand... sounds scary. Especially if it were to go on for many days on end. I'll definitely give an update on the high yield account, I know Graham Stephan put out a great video outlining some that pay 1%+ APY (though some of them come with stipulations, most of them seem pretty good). This is the video I'm referencing, kzbin.info/www/bejne/mX-5XmCIbbKcfKc , but will still come out with my own when I open an account 😊

Cash doesn't exist in my mind for some reason. If I don't see a number drop in my bank account or a number rise on my credit card, it's like the transaction didn't happen. So, I usually recklessly spend cash, which is why I never carry it. I also SPY as well because most can't consistently beat it as you said. Have some crypto too, was a small % of my portfolio until it grew much larger. Good vid!

Anyway, I dont keep any cash on hand, I just have no use for cash these days. We live on our credit card, get the miles, and take trips around the world! We have an emergency fund of about 6 months of expenses. We both throw a lot of money towards retirement and we have a taxable investment account with individual stocks. The stocks are pretty boring, blue chips with solid dividends, and I dont chase flashy investments. I have nothing in crypto and most likely never will. I like being a boring investor 😉

I rarely use cash and only keep two cards on me at all times. Both are credit cards. I'm only budgeted a month ahead currently, but eventually I will make my M1 brokerage account as my "emergency fund". I was leaning towards keeping a 12 month EF, so that's why it will end up in my brokerage account. But it all depends on your risk tolerance. Write down every possible thing (within reason) that will take a dollar out of your wallet this year, and create a sinking fund for it. That way your "emergency fund" will only be needed for true emergencies.

I carry some cash on me cause I'll never know if I misplace cards, lose them to theft, or any other scenarios. I just graduated college, and the thing I liked about cash in college was that it was a limiter for me at times to be wise with direct spending. I could be wise with a card, but that is easy to just swipe and it helped me to make better decisions. Depending on the job I get in the future, I will definitely have an emergency fund for sure, but I may also keep a good amount of cold cash on me for various scenarios.

Good show! Thought to help investors: What about a U-turn bank investment. User wins 4% annually, they win 3.7%, bank takes cut. Opposite: User loses 2% in financial year. Insurance is deducted from account and account is restored to previous years cash level. We've all this digital coin and craziness but no stable guarantee that wins for all. (Better explained: the bank uses its 10 or 11% fixed assets to print 2% extra (from above example) and restoration of bank account occurs) Plus: If the bank account cannot be restored for some avalanche financial reason, the gov gives tax back to a business as gratitude for having stable money that isn't offshore

Great Video! 🥳 Following my long answer to your questions and how it's like in Germany. lI've like 30 to 40€ cash. So just some cash, but sometimes there are places where you (still) can't pay with card. I don't have a credit card. In Germany credit cards are not the standard but everybody, at least age 16 or older, has a debit card. I've got a pass book with money like from my confirmation. It grows very very slooow, but nothing can happen to that money so it's kinda like an emergency fund, but not quiet. I don't have to pay rent or anything like that due to still living with my parents. I'm paying in an investment fond every month. That's saving for when I'm older and wanna buy an apartment or anthing like that. I want to have another debit account when I've got a job with an higher income for travel and also functioning as an emergency fund. At the moment I'm just a student at University. Also want to learn more about and try stocks.

Here's a couple of thoughts on overall investing in general. When you look at the future value formula, the experts always stress time because it is the exponent. However, one of the most underrated inputs of the future value formula is the rate of return. For example, is someone maxed out their 401(k) and IRA (for a total of ~$24k) for 50 years, the difference between averaging 8% vs 9% per year would result in a $6MM difference. Finding something that gives the best rate of return over the long haul (time and pressure) creates the biggest impact.
@TheCollegeChris2 жыл бұрын
so you're not adjusting for the risk free rate or inflation or expenses so I would cut that in half and 8 or 9 percent annual returns is crazy high over 50 years. also you aren't considering taxes on your gains or income in the case of retirement accounts. With your strategy and 25k it would be more realistically to say a mill maybe 1.5 to 2 with a Roth IRA as it would be tax free.

Very nice!! love the diversified portfolio. And same here, really started thinking about building up my emergency fund once I graduated. Sounds like you're on a great track 😊

I find laddering EE bonds is a great way to build an emergency fund. If I don't use the money after 20 years the money doubles automatically.

What do you think about buying Gusd stable coin and earning 6-8% annually instead of a "High Yield" savings account?
@TaylorBell3 жыл бұрын
Not sure that's for me! But I'll look into it 😊

Hey Taylor great video. Gave the video a quick thumbs up 👍🏻. As for your questions 1) I try to carry around a little bit of cash at all times and if I’m going somewhere that I know I might run into a situation I’ll withdraw some additional cash for a just in case scenario. 2) Currently since I’m living at home I do not have many expenses but I do have an “emergency fund” built up to estimate future expenses just to have it so when I get those expenses I have it built up already. Hard to say how many months though. I’m also planning to buy a house within a few years so I’m saving up for that situation with a separate savings account. And I do have a Roth as well as an individual investment account. My Roth is just in a target date retirement fund and my individual account has more individual stocks including Tesla which I bought cheap lol. Trying to diversify more into an S&P 500 type fund. You may have made a decision on your savings account but I have both Ally and Discover both have advantages but personally I like Discover so that’s would recommend for you but both are good options.

Wow Taylor! How much money have you accumulated before even starting work? You say I have sooo much money in my checking account! Wow! Then how have you NOt invested it so far? You sound so smart about investing. I don’t think normal people who don’t have family’s support can accumulate that much money

"Sinking funds" can be a great tool for savings goals. If you can keep a 50%+ savings rate even after moving to New York, you will be set. 🙂

Can you lose money in an SPY ETF? How would I go about investing in that?
@biggestbullsfan85693 жыл бұрын
You should get VOO instead of SPY. Same index and less fees
@TaylorBell3 жыл бұрын
Yess several people have commented this now, I didn't realize there were fewer fees! Thanks for the tip :)

Quick question-with your investments, do you have a percentage you put into SPY each month, and a percentage you put into the blue-chip stocks? Ex. If you had a $100, do you put X % into SPY and Y% into the blue chips? Thanks!
@TaylorBell3 жыл бұрын
No set percentages at the moment, but when I have my steady paychecks starting to come in this month, I'll probably create a more dialed-in strategy!

Question- So why invest in SPY ETF instead of the S&P 500? I have never heard of it before. & who do you go through to invest in SPY ETF? I am invested in S&P 500 with vanguard.

Barely ever carry cash on hand. Back when the world was normal i would keep about 20-40 dollars if i was going to go eat and stuff. Emergency fund aka savings is around 3 years of expenses. (Saving for a house)
@TaylorBell3 жыл бұрын
Yep same here with cash.. almost never carry it but want to start carrying $20 or so for gas emergencies. And good for you, 3 years is a lot to save up! Hoping you find a great future home :)
@TritonTv694203 жыл бұрын
@@TaylorBell thanks. The cash was for tips. I honestly feel dumb having that much in a low yeild savings account. But with the volatility of the market this last year im cautious to put a bunch in there. I might buy this year. Who knows. Good vids taylor. Cya in the next one. Ps love the whoosh transitions.

I don't usually carry a lot of cash around although I think it is helpful as it is harder to spend frivolously unlike swiping a card. My wife and I just started giving ourselves a cash "allowance" that we can spend on whatever we want outside of our budget. We did recently start building back up our emergency fund after having to use it last year. We had 6 months saved up last time, but due to increased expenses due to buying a house we now have saved up about 3 months of expenses. I have always tried any new high interest savings account I could find but they always ended up cutting the interest to almost nothing or going out of business. Recently I have been putting my money into Worthy Bonds which gives me 5% annually. Not a lot of people talk about them but I have been using them for 2 years now with no issues.
@TaylorBell3 жыл бұрын
Same here with the cash, and so true it's tough to spend it frivolously! There's something about handing over a bill that hurts a little extra lol. That's a fun cash budget idea, I think it's always great to treat ourselves here and there if we can afford to. Good for you for having that emergency fund going into the pandemic... I'm sure that helped out a lot. And super good to know about your experience with the high yield savings and Worthy Bonds. I'll definitely be looking into both before I choose which way to go! Thanks so much for the input!! 😊

I was very irresponsible with my money until I discovered the minutiae of personal finance and investing and in turn began my path to becoming a financial advisor. I tend to carry about anywhere from $20 to $100 in cash at any given time. I have a question, why not a regular S/P index fund? I'm guessing ease of liquidation...

you’re SO refreshing! I don’t like your content, I really LOVE them! regardless of generations, and economic trends, I think you highlighted 3 main (timeless) pillars of money: saving, investing & emergency. you’re the new Buffet. BETTER than him! (You should also maybe partner with Ellevest!) go girl! 👏👏👏 re: your question on carrying cash-> I’ve not carried cash since (well forever) but since 2006. I was sometimes using even debit card when I didn’t want to use CC, so I don’t have to use cash but then… I move to Berlin. And every single neuron in my brain tries to unlearn what I’ve been doing! It’s 60% cash region (I was told that most of that 40% happened literally because of Covid!)
