A couple of tips are to check basic functions: turn signals and hazards (make sure both front and rear work), windshield wipers, power steering, power windows, etc. Look for other VIN numbers around the car (doors, panels) make sure they all match Carry an OBDII device to look at any codes (also make sure to check for codes before test driving and *after* to make sure no codes came up after driving it. Check for panel gaps and fitment (if there's a noticeable gap, the vehicle could've been in an accident and had a panel replaced), if something doesn't quite fit right, it could've been replaced from an accident or could be aftermarket Also make sure all doors, hood and trunk/tailgate/hatch close properly and don't require excessive force or don't stay open Listen for a good start, idle, and changing of gears. On the topic of gears, make sure all work and that it can go in reverse (My dad's truck suddenly couldn't go in reverse but could go in any other)

I always bring a small low strength magnet to check for body filler. if the magnet doesn't stick to a part of the car you know should be steel, chances are there's bondo or some other body filler there. Gives you an idea of whether it was in an accident or not and if it was repaired properly following an accident or not.
@Suburbanhotrods7 жыл бұрын
Mitchell McGarvey that's good for a new car but when I go look at a car that's made before like 75 it's pretty common to see bondo. So not necessarily all cars but good call.
@criticallycanadian7 жыл бұрын
ww2nutandgunnut I've used that trick to check out a Datsun 240z and I may have bought it had I not used the trick. My buddy came along with me and taught me that trick. there was way more rust in the car than we could visually see.
@Suburbanhotrods7 жыл бұрын
Mitchell McGarvey well yea it's 240z and I understand a lot times I just check frame rails floors and rear and front quarters for rust and just knock the fenders for bondo. On most cars I've looked at bondo on a car made before 75ish usually isn't a bad sign for me. It's all about the amount. I once looked at 69 corona that had a hole in the frame and so I asked the owner and she goes "oh I never seen that or heard about that" and then like 5 mins later she said that her husband had put like spray filler in that and half the rear end was shitty bondo. That car was only $500 tho. So did you get a z?

I made pretty much all the mistakes possible when buying my car. I even had a plan before hand and really thought about what to look for and how to go about it but I got too caught up in wanting the car that I acted like the problems were nothing. Long story short, I regret it because I can't even drive the car and might have to just part it out. I've been learning though and even made a really detailed write up on how to buy a car so now I'm very conscious about it. Hopefully the next time I go look at a car it will go better. It really is a skill and is harder than you'd think, especially when buying cheaper cars.

Congrats on the G man!! they're amazing vehicles, I've owned a few of these cars just an fyi/tips for ya if you don't already know: 1. check your oil weekly (not one de i've owned hasn't leaked oil its just a thing with the VQ) 2. generally generally your gas gauge will say 1/4 of a tank until empty but its actually on e/low fuel, it'll start to sputter say when your uphill/flooring it the cause of this is a faulty sensor by the fuel pump (unsure what sensor it was forgot the name) fairly easy to do. 3. theres also a built in shift light on the sedan 6mt if you would like to set it (mines was an 05 sedan so I'm not sure marcos has it). 4. the backseat armrest on the passenger side theres a little pouch thats where your first aid kit should be located if the previous owner didn't throw it away lol. 5. a lot of sedan are prone/known to have this weird creaking noise from the front end of the vehicle almost sounds like a bad balljoint kinda creak/pop, i would highly suggest to look at the compression rods their bushings oem anyway are notorious to go bad even as low as 15,000 miles. 6. burn some rubber and have some fun :)

-The Craigslist app is 10x better for searching CL. It lets you search in a range or surrounding cities as well as other options at the same time. - Have dude make some ramps out of 2x6 or 2x8 etc and leave them in the back of the van. When you're gonna load a car just drive the back wheels of the van up on the ramps and it'll tilt the trailer. If it's not high enough having the jack will add even more. - Make a list before going to check out the car so you don't space stuff if you get all amped.

Great vids for sure! Here all the way in West Texas, I get paid to check out vehicles before people buy and surprisingly yes I get quite a bit of calls for it, dealerships or even through Craigslist and the first this i check is for any signs of damage, hubs check by shaking the wheels, the frame or sub-frame, suspension if any needs work or torn, engine noises, of course more I check based on the make and model as i research common things that might be wrong or need repairs, keep the videos now!🖒

check suspension. lifted, dropped, CV axles can get stressed and fail. uneven tire wear. I also do hard, I mean hard, brake test, that'll really show if the car needs brakes, abs systems aren't working properly, or if pulls left or right. also check all electrics, specially on "luxury" cars/trucks. if you can, Jack the car up to check bearings, control arms, ball joints, bushings. also if you care about cruise control, check for that, some people don't care for it, but hey knocks cash off. making sure all lights work, making sure all day lights are present!!! also getting a cheap obii scanner works wonders! try the 4*4 if needed. so much to check it's stressful! haha

I live near Orlando and am stressing like crazy trying not to get ripped off on a used car. My budget is 8k firm and I want the best I can get with that money. What car would you think would be the most reliable and fun to drive in your opinion?
