Western NC is one of the few places, or maybe the only place, that rivals NH in terms of the height and extent of the mountains. They do go on forever. Beyond the Smokies, the Black Mountains include Mt. Mitchell, the tallest mountain east of the Rockies. It's so beautiful in that part of the country, for sure.

@djg59503 жыл бұрын
@@barbararall5498 It was a very bad time to be hiking through the Smokies for sure. A lot of snow and very cold. That is why he stayed in the bathroom but he got a ride part way (road was closed due to snow and ice) to G'burg when he decided to get out. Said he walked about 5 miles before a plow guy picked him up (town 15 mile walk). I know that area well. I've camped there a few times. Because he didn't get an accurate weather report and it was too expensive (beyond his allotted budget) he decided to go back up and try again. The snow was too deep so he ended up spending 2 more nights in the bathroom before he could get a ride out. Better to stay in the bathroom than a shelter because it's heated ! Many a hiker has spent a night or two in that bathroom (Check the Crawfords 2019 hike). They turn off the water in the sinks in winter though. I'm guessing he quit (he never said the real reason) because of the cost of hotels and hostels. He just couldn't afford to stay in them when the weather was bad.

When you take side trips to see the views you drop your pack. Is the trail safe enough where you don't worry about someone messing with your pack? Is it true for the entire AT (towns and all)? And also how great is it to hike .4 miles without a pack. It must feel great.
@TaylortheNahamshaHiker3 жыл бұрын
I'm anyways super cautious where I drop my pack. In this case I speed it a little bit into the trail and in some tall grass. When I go inside buildings I always try to leave it with other hikers or around the back where the public is less likely to see it. It's always a little scary leaving it because I depend on it. And it feels great to hike the .4 with no weight lol!
