I Spent a Day in The Dominican Republic’s Most Dangerous Slum is sponsored by GroundNews. For local perspectives on global issues, go to ground.news/ta.... My link gets you 40% off the Ground News unlimited access Vantage plan.
In this video, I visit The Dominican Republic's Most Dangerous hood, LA 42 de CAPOTILLO. Many locals warned me not to see this area in Santo Domingo due to safety issues, but I wanted to experience both sides of this country. I explore and meet with the community to discover what happens here.

I live in Santo `Domingo and after seeing your first video, which I loved, my first thought was that this video was unnecessary. all cities have low income areas where security is an issue. but after watching this video, I have to say this was the most thoughtful portrayal of a low income neighborhood I've ever seen anywhere, portraying in equal measure the challenges, the beauty of the culture where it's allowed to shine, and the power of hope and change.

These are the neighborhoods that teach you the truth about a country. Visited them in places like Brazil (where I lived about 5 years), South Africa (where I spent several months in Joburg and elsewhere), Ghana (Accra seemed quite safe to me, even in vey humble neighborhoods), Cameroon, and also when I spent time in the Dominican Republic many decades ago.

Majority of African countries are quite safe. Only problem is pickpocketing or petty theft which is common on the continent. With the exception of S. Africa where gun violence is an issue.

We speak spanish, no french or english. No everyones use drugs. If they don't have to buy food, less will have to buy drugs! Do not exagerate your comments, it is a poor neighborhood only. Being poor does not mean they are the worst of Dominicans, from there, good people come out from barrios.

As a Dominican I have to say that it is a good video although many of the information given is not entirely true, starting with the fact that there are not 100k people living in Capotillo but around 40k according to the last census, and although sexual tourism and prostitution are problems real in Rd it is not true that it is the one that has the highest rate of this in the Caribbean you have Cuba, even all the small islands in the Caribbean have this same problem, the same thing about teenage pregnancy is very recurrent throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, Capotillo in terms of crime is Disney Land compared to the dangerous neighborhoods of Puerto Rico, Jamaica, even Tirnidad and Tobago, which surpass the DR in homicides and by many
@Aric_1
@Aric_1 3 ай бұрын
I don’t understand why you have the need to bring other islands into this documentary . The documentary is based on the tiny island of Santo Domingo and the problems that the island is facing today with prostitution, poverty and violence. There is no need for you to mention the island of Cuba and any other islands since this documentary is based on the island of Santo Domingo. This documentary is not based on the islands that you are mentioning or any other countries, we don’t have nothing to do with this documentary. Seems like the truth hurts and you want to put all the other islands and countries in the same boat.

@@Aric_1 I didn't bring the other islands into the conversation to throw hate, what happens is that the same video makes a comparison between the DR and the other Caribbean islands, an example of this when he says that it is a Caribbean country, with prostitution he is indirectly making a comparison. and nowhere in the video did it hint that any of the problems discussed in the video are not real

a little fun fact from someone that was born in Dominican Republic, the government doesn't care about its people now here me out he doesn't care about the people of Santiago that live in the countryside and Ama give you some examples.fisrt of all the food quality for school are ABSOLUTE GARBAGE my friend one time when he ate at the cafeteria got food poisoning from some scrambled eggs and rice and he quoted(the eggs taste artificial)another thing is that the food derived from a dinner that infamous for having a rat infestation and not approved by the fad or the law bc they simply don't care, the second part is the power outages and the power company scamming the population and not keeping there promise now you may ask what is this promise well to put it short the promise is when pay to have electricity in your home its seposed to be 24h7 now from this you should assume that its like that but no there are constant power outages to a extend where it comeback after 3 days even and according to the United States law( this can count as breech of contract)the worse part of this is that they don't compensate people for this and I know some people that had there electronics damaged from this heck my grandpas fridge stoped working and he had to by a new one.and the last part is the police and the hospitals, the police here are absolute garbage they are simply not equipped for a job like this especially in the country side where I have seen multiple people getting mugged or even shot and the criminals GET AWAY WITH IT BC THEY DONT BOTHER INVESTIGATING.Not only this but the police even beg people to give them money bc they sometimes don't even get payed from the higher ups and the hospitals ohhh boy, some of the hospitals are know to false diagnose patients to export money out of them or there are cases where the hospitals are not placed in every city so some people who get sick which the majority of the time is old people they either get there in time or they actually end up dying which I have seen in happen in sanjuan be honest the majority of the country money goes to corrupt politicians and the republica Dominicana instead of the other parts of the countryside almost like there trying to hide the poor part of the country by making a illusion this is honestly disgusting and the reason why I hate my own country🙁
