Nice information. We have lived between the Dawoodi Bohras for a long time. As a Muslim we find them memorizing Quran and practicing Islam like you said praying in mosque. Mourning on the Prophets grandson Husain is one thing they do very regularly. As a social person we see them helping us in society hygiene & plantation. They also run a community kitchen which delivers food to every bohra 6 days a week ..

Excellent video! As a Dawoodi Bohra I never expected to see my faith explored on your channel! Just a couple notes though about our community: While you are right we render 5 prayers a day, standard practice is to do them at 3 times: the fajr prayer stands alone, and we pray the asr immediately after zuhr, and Isha almost immediately after Maghrib. If one wanted to they could pray 5x a day, but the standard practice is more convenient and encouraged! It’s a small nuance but an important one, I think. Another note is that the Dawoodi Bohra presence stretches well beyond India/Pakistan. While the majority of our 500k-1m adherents live in the Subcontinent, we have communities in East Africa, North America, UK, EU, Australia and more numbering in the thousands to 10s of thousands each. I’m personally an American, and we have populations scattered across the country, with our largest mosques being in TX and CA. In any case, keep up the great work!

@@Giantcrabz most of the publicly-facing preaching really deals with more grounded concepts about history, fiqh, the importance of the Imams and Da’is, remembrance of Hussain, etc. while the more esoteric aspects of philosophy are covered in higher learning and rarely fleshed out in preaching. It’s not wholly inaccessible, but to get to the guided study of those texts one must go through the guided study of more basic texts first (like Nauman’s Daim al Islam), which means that a full understanding of Bohra esotericism requires a whole lot of time and effort.

I've seen a Dawoodi Bohra pray next to me. It's interesting, as I'm a Shi'a (Twelver). He wore a bandana, then stands and does a left/right glance (like tasleem but standing up), while dangling his hands. I mean it looked weird, but I'm sure there is a reason behind their practice.

That is indeed what is done in Azaan and Iqamah. The word Hayya-al-as-Salaat and Hayya-al-al-Falaah are said twice when looking towards the right and left respectively. The dangling hands is more like taking the niyyat for namaaz and then raising hands parallel to ears and recite Allahu-Akbar and begin the namaaz.

We also have a huge presence in the Middle East and North America. But most of us Speak Lisan- Ul - Dawat which Filipe had mentioned originated from various Indian languages, so I believe that we have migrated to these parts of the world very recently from India.

We have achieved much, but have been separated from the world because of the lack of trust we have in outsiders, as we have always been on edge, subject to violence and genocide. @@corsaircaruso471 Tolkien was himself largely interested in theology and he actually wrote theological treateses/mystical stories about Middle Earth that can be found for example in the Silmarilion. Of course it is a question to what extent this reflects for example his personal beliefs but in principle it looks like this: In the begining there was one god, the Eru which means "the one" that creates beings of light called Ainur for him to sing and glorify him. Those beings then sing heavenly music that becomes the source of all creation. One of the Ainur stands in confrontation to the others as a solo voice and that is the greatest of them, Melkor. Melkor's individualism makes the music more beautiful but it also makes Melkor believe that he is better than the others which later corrupts him. When the music is finished Eru sends out the Ainur to create the world for his children, the Elves and the Men and the Ainur gain physical bodies from their creation which reflects their nature becoming Valar. Because the nature of Melkor is now evil he becomes a being of fire and ice, the great enemy, Morgoth. Thus the history of the world is the struggle between the Valar (there are also less powerful beings called Maiar) and the Morgoth that ends in great judgement where the song and the creation become one again and beings such as Balrogs, Sauron or Gandalf are actually light-created angels that gained bodies that reflected their nature. I hope this has told you something more about Tolkienology.

I've been binging your videos. This is such a great resource. I'd be really interested in an analysis of how these schisms have been changed by increased communication and intra-region migration today. I grew up in a church denomination in the rural southeast that traditionally had highly polemical views towards basically all other Christian denominations, but movement of people around the states and telecommunications today in some ways brings that denomination a lot closer to broader American evangelical thought. I'd imagine theres a ton of similarly interesting dynamics happening throughout the whole of humanity right now.

There are other groups as well which have split off from the mainstream Dawoodi Bohras, such as the Hebtiahs Bohras, Atba-i-Malak, and the Qutbi Bohras. Additionally, the Alavi Bohras have opened their library to scholars recently. As for for the intricacies of theology, it is indeed not discussed, with focus being on morals, teachings of past Dais, and the martyrdoms of Ali and Hussein, the latter of which has taken the position of a metaphorical gate of heaven.

P.S. just for the sake of historical accuracy, not disputing that Hinduism is a generally peaceful religion, BUT, Humans are humans and as such, we mustn't forget all the anti-Buddhist violence that the plethora of Indian beliefs ( we now combine and call Hinduism) inflicted on Buddhists and Jains during their initial years and further on down the line.
