Hi Ladies! I'm a former wig stylist for many years in south florida. I've worked primarily on jon renau wigs which I love by the way. To remove frizz, ALWAYS moisturize with their product for heat friendly wigs or with a leave in conditioner and water in a spray bottle. Use a curling iron at the lowest setting 250 to 300 depending on how bad the frizz is... be quick no more than 5 to 15sec. Use a pin clip or a roller to keep in place while it cools. Using hot rollers will work too, but it doesn't get as smooth and it takes longer. This works for all synthetic fibers. I've had clients who were able to keep their wigs much longer. I miss my clients so much❤I did alterations, color, highlights, cutting, styling and so many other things with wigs and hair pieces. I transformed many lives including my own. I'm grateful for the experience💖 Love your channel by the way😍 I'm sorry this long🤣but when this fiber first came out jon renau didn't have a steamer for it. But I've used wig steamers and I still stand by the way I did it😁

When you use hot rollers do you spritz any water on the fibers? Also, I saw a video once using rollers and then putting heavy plastic over the entire head and spraying add up inside the bag with steam then tying the bag with a string and let it đry. I haven't tried it because I was afraid it might melt the fibers. Have you ever tried this?

Taz you are amazing, as always!!! You and Marlene are my go to gals!!! I am a Retired hairdresser who grew up with falls & wiglets, and even worked in a wig store when I was 18! Here's what I have found: If you are going to steam synthetic hair of any kind, you need to secure it around a smooth roller and clip that roller in place and let it dry completely, otherwise, the hair will rebound, like by your part line in the video. I even take it a step further and use a fabric steamer, with a wide flat head and run that head on top of each section , over the roller--the roller almost acts like your ironing board. Giant rollers let you smooth further down the hair shaft for a smooth look, but then sometimes I will switch it to a smaller one for a tighter curl, right after. Sometimes I use end papers to hold it down, but the steam slightly melts the hair so it holds and a day later is as smooth as silk. By the time your wig needs defuzzing, its already in bad shape, but you can extend its life for another couple of months or more! HD fibers, not as long, but still extends the life. A curling iron on both types, with the hair wet, works really well, too. BUT nothing is as good as a brand new wig!!! I have the new Lange flat iron, which is round and wow can you do some fancy curls & waves with that, but realllllly hard to get the technique down. I am from the roller set era at 72 and the youngins can turn those flat irons on a dime but can't and don't want to do a roller set! Old school and hard for a non-hairdresser, but it works every time! For the money we spend on wigs, both are skill worth learning....or not!!! Basically, steam, wrap, hold securely and dry completely and it'll work! Beachy waves are so hard to duplicate and I think its easier to burn the hair with an iron than steam...........but the science is right on. Back in the day, we would wet set the synthetic wigs, then stand the canvas block in the lowest shelf of the over at 200 degrees, for 30 minutes, turn off the oven and leave it overnight to dry inside. Look of Love taught me that technique...made everlasting curls!!!!! Oh my, this is long winded!!!

@@judycrisenbery2982 Yes I did!!! Great for curly do's. It permanently sets the curl, like all heat methods. Needs to be wet first, creates its own steam. Never tried with huge rollers....they "bake" wigs professionally!!!

I use steam all the time. There's nothing better than a new wig, but after about a month of wear I can't stand it any longer and out comes the steamer. You know what I'm talking about....it takes about a half hour for the nape to be a snarled mess, it's clumpy, frizzy and tangly. When a wig gets to that point I usually steam the whole thing straight and then will put a style back into it using a round brush for waves like in JR Miranda or Minka, or the barrel of a curling iron (unplugged) to form a curl like in JR Julianne or Scarlet, hit it with some steam and wait a few seconds til cooled. I've used steam with curlformers and waveformers and that works excellent as long as you pay attention to the root area and don't get any weird kinks in there. Learning this skill has extended the life of my wigs from a month or two to up to a year or more, and I get a lot more wear out of my favorite wigs!

Thank you talking about not using a steamer. I never dug my steamer out of my craft room and it will be a very long time before I do since Ida did damage to my house. I do have the velvet hot rollers from the 80's or 90's, the hot sticks, and a hair dryer. I have the regular sponge rollers and some vidal sassoon sure grip rollers with clips also. Curling irons in different sizes, a flat iron, that you can change the plates to a crimper, a small flat iron, a 3 barrel waver and a couple of the hot air styling brushes. Thinning shears and hair scissors. I started doing my hair and my mother's as a teenager, mom passed in 2006. I am now going on 61 and wear wigs because of health problems and medications. Never went through cosmetology school, but we always got compliments on our hair and asked what salon we used. As a teenager and in my 20's, I would use hair clippers to cut the neighborhood kids and the pet clippers on my dogs. Over the years, the soft bonnet and the hard bonnet dryers have worn out. I have collected these items over the years. So I do have a lot that can be used. All these have been used on bio hair, but so glad to be able to use on my wigs.

Thanks so very much for this video. The steamer as a styling tool or aid has always been something that I never felt 100% on board with. As for frizzies, that's a different story for me. As far as styling and wig care in general, I'm a minimalist, meaning avoiding styling productsand if I decide to use it, it's in a very specific area with as little as possible. Overall, I'm a spray bottle of water, scrunched, hang upside down, clips, etc. Using the heat of my hands and, if need, be a shot of air from the blow dryer to accomplish what I'm wanting. I'm extremely focused on the care and maintenance of my wigs than anything else, which are tips I learned from YOU, LOL! But they all still have the same soft, silky, healthy hair look and feel, and that makes me a happy girl! Thanks SO SO much for this crucial video!

Hi Taz, very informative. I have quite a few non HF units, but two in particular are over 10 yrs old. Both are discontinued styles and I'm quite attached to them. Both are long so of course develops infamous frizzies at the back nape. I don't have a wig steamer, but I've owned a small travel-sized hand held steamer that has a brush attachment. This attachment is a lifesaver! That steamer has kept me going with these two discontinued styles, which are not heat friendly. One of these units got singed by an oven blast. I thought I'd have to throw it out, but I got out my trusty steamer and fixed the frizzies area; it was just like new again. As you mentioned, the steam will straighten the fibers, so I use velcro rollers and a few bursts of steam to restore any curl or bounce the steamer originally flattened. Steamers do have their place and have saved my two discontinued units. For the most part, I only develop frizzies at the back nape area so I section off all other fibres and only steam the fibers with the friz. This way, the outside of the unit looks as it did from the manufacturer. I have not used hair dryers on any of my units. Well wishes to you, as always~Rae 🌹🥰

The steam heats up the frizzies and as I brush with pressure straight from the base to the tips of the hair, the hair gets restored to it's silky smooth texture. I am so thankful I held on to this steamer as I initially bought it to steam out wrinkles in my clothes. I never worry about frizzies anymore because the brush attachment fixed them instantly. I hope yours works for you too.Also, if you find the brush steaming straightening out any waves or curls, I use velcro rollers and just give the rolled up hair some good bursts of steam. Let the rolled up hair dry completely before you remove the rollers. Long live our hair! 🌹

I’ve had good luck using my Conair hot air brush on high to defrizz and dry my Jon Renau HD toppers. I used your tip about adding the Simply Stylin’ silicone spray to the ends a few minutes before washing. I then wash with Woolite, rinse and soak for a few minutes in water with fabric softener before rinsing again. I roll the topper in a towel, shake off any excess water, and pin to a wig head. I dry in small sections, pulling the ends fairly tight to the hot brush until dry, about 8-10 seconds before releasing. It makes the topper feel almost like new for several wears! I love my steamer but I only use it to get rid of frizz at the nape and ends. On both my HF and non HF wigs, I usually go for the hot air brush because it just doesn't get hot at all. I will spray down the sections of hair that I want to style with some water and use a straight iron set to like 10. Mine goes to 25 so again, it's warm enough to work but it's not hot at all.

I find that steam doesn't work well at all on a permatease wig, especially at the root area. However it can work great on long styles. It's great to smooth out the nape area, and the ends. It's also good to reset a monotop wig with rollers and steam. Hot rollers are also a great way to restyle a synthetic wig. I have used them on both heat friendly and non heat friendly. The rollers that are lined in felt or a velvet-like fabric are the best. They don't snag the hair and it's more of an indirect heat. You just leave them in until they fully cool like real hair. Great for adding a curl or wave back to a wig

I use steam carefully on almost all of my non-heat friendly pieces by Jon Renau with great success, I use a cheap multi-purpose steamer that does not have a targeted nozzle, so maybe that is why I have never fried the fibers. I love curls, but Julianne and January come with very uniform curl placement, which looks a bit unnatural. So I will leave some curls as they come, and use a similar size of barrel curling iron to make curls the opposite direction with steam (curling iron is off), or sometimes the same direction as the original curls, but a different angle. Sometimes I end up redoing most of the piece from how it came. I have petite features, and medium to large curls don't look quite right on me, so a smaller barrel looks more natural to me. The only thing that doesn't work well is curling completely straight pieces, such as Kristi. They don't tend to take the curl the same way as curly pieces.

I’ve now been wearing wigs for about three years and still haven’t had the courage to use my Jon Reneau steamer🤦🏻‍♀️ 😂 I also have had a Muse wig which I purchased from Lisa a few year ago after she reviewed it and there’s just one spot on the side oh the lace front that’s is a smidge frayed so I want to trim the lace and I’m petrified that I’ll ruin the whole thing. Actually , I also purchased two other Muse wigs from wig sisters and the lace seems very wide in front and I’m so worried that trimming them will ruin them. We understand the feeling! I was very timid in the beginning as well. If you think the lace needs trimmed, use some pinking shears and take off little "micro" increments until you reach the desired result. It shouldn't take much.. go forth with courage..lol!! Thank you for sharing! 💪🏻🙏🏻😍

This is what I did to help start to overcome my fear of ruining my wigs…I bought cheap wigs off wish for $8 give or take a few $. I also went to my local thrift stores and bought cheap used wigs and practiced on those, still do, trying different things, seeing what works for me and learning the fibers etc. I like the expensive wigs and it is scary not knowing if I’m gonna possibly ruin it, especially because I can’t afford to ruin them. Just an idea it’s helped me tremendously with learning wigs.

Thank you, Taz. I'm on the fence about steaming my wigs. I have a small clothing steamer that I use. On the one hand, I managed to ruin a Finn and a Jon Renau wig that were curly. BUT I also managed to re-curl the Finn using the steamer and an unplugged curling iron. She doesn't look like brand new but she's back to curly now. I have not damaged any of the lace fronts but I know I steamed too close to the permatease on the Jon Renau wig - so not only is it stick straight , it's flat and looks like roadkill.

I ise a wet/dry flat iron wand from Quo for only those areas as you said; i just wet the ends that I am working on as this morning at work before my shift...and on my Well Played...with the dial only on second setting, I clamp down just for a couple of seconds..put more water on my hand and do it again until it feels good again.....😊❤I also used this method with my Ignites from Jon Reneau.

I've used steam frequently on synthetic fibers. I don't over do it--- just enough steam to warm the hair, then set it in roller(s) overnight. I've never had a problem. I wear my hair away from my face and this is how I direct the fibers to flow back away from my face.

I remain in the learning phase but I can attest to the errors of steam. No matter how careful I have tried to be I have caused some amount of damage to my synthetics EVERY single time I have applied steam. Some barely noticeable, some repairable and some ruined. Hair dryer is the only heat I will use. Much more predictable for a beginner like me. Thank you for the great information!

I agree completely! Start out slow and use the least effective dose of heat.. you can always add more passes with the heat if needed. No need to be afraid, just take it slow a little at a time until effect is acheived. I prefer the dry heat vs the steam.. I always get better results even though I am fairly skilled at both. These are all great points. I've never used steamer. I tend to not do a lot with my wigs other than hair accessories, like I don't use products much and I don't wash them unless they really need it. The only thing I will do is cut my wigs. And that usually works out. It's good to know all this so thank you for this video

I started wearing wigs Aug 2021. I use to have a full head of curly, crazy hair (but no more). I am very use to working with my bio & styling tools, always fighting with curls, etc. So I am comfortable with the streamer, hot air brush and blow dryer for synthetic & HH wigs. To train back “forward leaning” hair (top of the wig toward the front) to keep it from lopping in my face, I used both/either JR’s streamer &/or blow dryer. Whether the streamer or blow dryer, the results are so so. :( With fringe (or front pieces) I like it to be up off my face with some lift (like you have with lots of your wigs). I’ve tried all 3 tools; to date, no perfect solution. I combine product too for lift at the front hairline & fringe. I find it quiet difficult to keep wig hair from flopping in my face and/or front lift … it is frustrating since I’ve worked with my own unruly hair all my life; I am 60. I cant seem to get wigs from not flopping in my face! I have 14 wigs: EW, RW, JR, HM, Noriko, and Eny. I have maybe 4 styles that don’t constantly want to flop in my face. I am really taken back by how difficult it is to train hair flopping issues & maintaining front hairline lift. FYI - I haven’t ruin any wigs to date. 🤞🏻 I am beginning to wonder if No Wig Face Flopping is a realistic goal.

UGH! I am very frustrated with the "forward leaning" hair of wigs as well. I just don't understand why they make them that way. To me, that's a dead giveaway that it is a wig. That's just not what hair does, does it? MY hair never did that. I ruined a wig trying to steam the direction of the hair in a more down the sides or backward direction. It totally exposed that white line that separates the lace front and the mono top - another wig feature that I hate that seems they could eliminate.

@@elaine9396 with the steamer I watched tons of videos on how to steam a wig, both HF and synthetic. You must be very careful - you cant get too close and always continually move the steamer, ie, dont hold the steamer in one place. Less is always best whether it’s a steamer, blow dryer or hot air brush with synthetics. I move the steamer in a waving, slow motion, I dont hold it in one place. I do find it helps with flopping, but it’s not 100%. I dont know if anything is 100%. Disclaimer, I am not a wig expert, just very experienced with my own bio hair & styling tools. It use to take me an 1 hr+ a day to fix my hair, sometimes longer. Please note again I am not a wig expert.

It is a realistic goal! Try holding the hair in place with clips, steam lightly, but leave the clips for an hour. Until completely cool and dry. This works for me.

When my wig got frizzy, I took it to the wig shop and they used heat curlers to style it for me. The style lasted a while, but, I had to keep taking it back for that fix, repeatedly. Soon, I just chose another wig and threw that damaged one out. I think the curlers help. But, the hot rollers are heavy and also heat the cap, likely loosening it, and screws up the permatease by melting it 11:25 down in unexpected random places that can show.

I totally agree. I've noticed a funky feeling to my heat friendly wigs when I've used steam - my RW Unfiltered especially. And, dang it, I ruined my Ellen Wille Turn (non heat friendly) when I attempted to loosen the curls! She's stick straight now and only fit to wear with a baseball cap. Lol! Sheri, I had a synth wig I thought I ruined for good by using too high heat & it sat for months. Then I pulled It back out (what the heck, wasn't good for anything anyway, might as well experiment on it or throw it out). I washed it, let it air dry, & then used a curling iron (setting 5 of 25), for 5-10 seconds on the dry hair, pinning curl with a tiny or small claw clip until completely cooled & I was very happy with the result! I have even felt confident enough to wear it out a few times so far & still very happy with it! By the way, I don't use many products bc I can't afford them, but I usually use leave in conditioner or heat protectant oil when curling dry hair. Not much, a small spray on the part I am getting ready to curl (about 1-2" wide) comb to spread it thru, then curl.

I have never used a steamer I have always been afraid. I do think that it will help on that dry hair that happens on the nape of the wig, just my thought. I use simply styling so far so good. The wig I wear that day I take off and use this simply styling ( very little) on my hand and wipe over the nape and comb that area if needed daily. That's been working so far. This is a relief. I'm a new wig wearer/collector and so overwhelmed by all the wig how-to's. From hair wax to lotions to shampoos that I see. I have a blonde and pink wig so far. My blonde one definitely needs some work to calm the poof going on and make the top look blended. I was going to get a steamer but this method definitely looks like a safer bet.

Thanks for the comments! It IS confusing! We all have our own preferences.. I think its best practice to try using your hands to style it first.. if that doesn't help, move on to gentle heat and products. Products like styling creme's tend to gum up the hair and make us have to wash more often which can add wear and tear to the wig. XOXO

I don’t use steam either! Are use a blow dryer brush on low with water or with a heat protectant and I try to use as little heat on my wigs as possible. The ones I seem to use the most heat on or my bobs or one length straighter styles and I use as little as possible!

When I saw the part of your wig I was like 😳. “There’s something wrong with my wig guru”.😁 I don’t own a steamer, I use the heated brush once in a while. I have eight wigs, none lace front. My problem is that I get my wigs expecting them to look like yours😂. My disappointment with Jones in Smokyrose is mayor, mine is longer than my previous Silversun8 (which I love), the curl-wave pattern is very different and it looks wiggy. What about using steam to restore wigs? I know some people even boil wigs to restore them. I use steam on old/second hand wigs to revive them. I don't know what else I could do ?

I just spent 2 hours steaming 2 heat friendly and 2 non-heat friendly. One of the non-heat friendly I burned when I opened the oven, it will never be quite the same but is works well enough for around the house. I like steam or the hair dryer which I use right after I wash it, it works to do some repair in the back, but only on straight styles or slight up or down turn. I use the steamer to put in curl and take out frizz, I have had good luck so far, but mindful anytime heat is applied to a wig it can do damage. I tried a straight iron on my Voltage and it completely destroyed it and there was not fixing it no mater what method I tried. Thank you so much for all you do to teach and share your experiences.

I only use a hair dryer in certain cases when I need a bit of lift at the front, and only small pulses of warm air from about 6-8 inches away. I do this on both heat friendly and not heat friendly and ONLY on DRY fiber, not wet:-) XOXO

What has worked for me is wetting the non-heat friendly wigs is using good old fashioned rollers. I always cut bangs in my wigs and sometimes I want the bangs to have a different "bent". So I'll wet the areas I want changed and then set them with rollers and leave them for a day or two. I've done that with my Renau toppers and a couple of wigs. It stays for a few wearings before I need to "re-set" it. And doesn't ruin the fibers.

I’ve noticed that too! I use a hairdryer to revamp my non HD and HD I just always makes sure it’s damp and on very low heat and use a roller brush. They turn out amazing! It’s what works for me and I use simply stylin silicone spray beforehand. If I want it to be curlier than what I’m able to get it with the dryer and roller brush, I will use steam but this is the only time I will… I use curlers with metal and I put a sack over the curlers and let steam rise up in the bag but never direct the steam right on the wig. Like when you’re at the salon and you’re sitting under the dryer. But I will use a Walmart sack just don’t let the ink touch the fibers! And I only have the steam going for about 30-45 seconds and about a minute or two later remove the sack, which I never fully close, and let it dry and cool down. Makes beautiful curls. Sometimes though I will just wrap the wet hair up with those curlers and blow dry it that way since the metal in the rollers get hot it shapes the wig that way, just let it cool. . Thanks, Taz! I just for the first time used heat on 2 of my wigs and I'm very happy with the result. they are heat friendly wigs and before that once I washed a synthetic wig it was basically over, I never could get then to look even close to what I bought originally so Im hsppy in my steam bubble

In my opinion the JR steamer is too strong and concentrate too much heat in one point. I do understand that a diffuse steam stream could ruin the style, but I use with caution a cheap wide steamer on not HD fibers and have very nice results. I also take in consideration the different tipes of fibers I am working with, not all the regular synthetics are the same.

I need something to get the hair from falling over my eyes in many of my wigs. What ive been doing is combing the wig on a canvas head. I pin the hair that keeps falling into my face in the direction of my choice. Then i spray it with water and let it dry and keep it on the canvas head for a while. When i put the wig on, the hair is out of my eyes as i pinned it. Easy peasy. Only difference i think is that im not steaming...just watering!!!❤

For my long styles that are clumpy, I prefer to dip them in hot boiled water with Downy in it, then immediately comb with a fine toothed comb. Of course, it makes them completely straight, though. They feel silky soft afterward, but after wearing for a few hours, they feel clumpy again, so I find I have to dip them again after wearing each day.

Hi Taz! So, I watched and learned a lot from this video, thanks! In it I believe you said you prefer using a hot air brush or blow dryer first for reshaping the wig. But I can't find any video with a title like that, other than the one showing hot air brush on a heat friendly wig to smooth the front fibers. Well, I'd like to see how it's done on a synthetic non heat friendly wig, to get some of the fibers off of the face, and how to lift/curl the bangs a little for the same reason. I think I've watched some of your videos that show this, but haven't found them now. 😭, 😄 Specifically, I have a few Gabor Carte Blanche wigs. I've trimmed the bangs and it changes some of the beauty of the style. But some of the bangs are longer and really bother me after while. I have a blow dryer and would like to watch how you do it. Can you find a video that shows this? You have so many,! 🙂

I used steam to remove flips in longer straight pieces. I knew I was too close to the fibers as I could see them kinky-curly or just misshapen about half way down to the ends. I’d then spend an hour cutting these off.

Hello! No, I do not wash a new wig unless in the rare occasion it has too much factory silicon on the fibers:-) I limit washing to absolute minimum to help the wig longevity XOXO

Wow - thanks - just in time! I would like to understand more clearly how you use a hair dryer on your wig. I would like to add lift at the base behind the bang area on a "Sassy". The fibers are sewn onto the wefts directionally down toward the eyes. I need to lift away from the cap starting about 2" from the front hairline, as I've had to cut bangs into her in order to wear her... Suggestions are welcome! Please help?
