Oh boy, you think this is how real couples behave? Yikes. Most couples don't take years to say what they are feeling. Most people don't treat their significant other like crap when they are feeling guilty (Thanksgiving episode where Penny found out she was married to zach). Most couples don't break up a bunch because they are afraid of their feelings (penny admitted this). Most couples don't forget their anniversary (they did multiple times). Most couples know their husband's birthday. I know it's a TV show and that it's scripted etc but Leonard and penny's relationship is a Freudian nightmare. They both are using the other to deal with the terrible relationship they have with their parents. If either one of them grew up with good parents that didn't warp them (rememberthe stories Penny told Leonard's mom when they first met), they would've never dated the other

After all the shit and misunderstandings and bad timing these two have been through along with their own baggage and insecurities, this is a really beautiful moment and possibly for both of them it really hits that they are in love. For Penny it’s the big real punch that this isn’t a fake “I love you”. It’s not the kind that’s just nice to hear, sends a young immature girl’s heart racing, & ends up being a ticket to her bed/panties like what she’s too use to from her previous bad relationships - her hearing it or saying it to what ever guy she thought she was “in love with” at the time. This has got to be amazing and liberating and terrifying for her and it’s a moment of emotional truth - not her overthinking anything! For Leonard it’s the truth of the words and knowing that it’s real - that her feelings are real - that Penny loves him, and for a guy as emotionally and psychologically traumatized as Leonard who longs to love and be loved… it’s no wonder why his voice cracked like that. It’s a solid truth against all of his worries thanks to their history and his insecurities. Plus, while we all know that sometimes actions speak louder than words, there are cases where words hold so much more power than just actions alone, you know?

Pure TV and comedy history. I am a very cynical guy and life has bashed me about but I am fortunate to have had such a moment in my life as Leonard feels when he say's "She loves me". It is a lovely moment where teh TV screen disappears and you are totally in that moment and is so real and effects you so much. in that every time I watch it Penny says "You know I love you" I hold my breath and this old fart feels a tear coming on. Big bang was pure magic and such shows with mix of characters and actors who you could tell they all love each other and were true 'friends' I doubt will ever come along again.

Penny was a hair away from losing Leonard at this point. If she didn't let slip she loved him here, Leonard probably throws in the towel or Penny lets doubt creep back in shortly after. It was subtle and passed off as a clueless Leonard joke but the writers of the show were basically telling us that without Penny's admission of love- Alex was lying in wait and the possibility for that relationship was very real.
