I remember being devastated when one of my cheap model rockets that took a few hours to build crashed or got damaged... can't imagine what its like to crash one of these that you spent hundreds or thousands of dollars on, spent days or weeks putting it together, and may be fully at fault for the crash as opposed to a model rocket crash where shit out of your control usually leads to the failure rather then you crashing it yourself trying to land!

I built and flew back in the mid 80's 1st. was a sig kadet senior, a cap 40 and another 40 series top wing. I had 2 gold series Futaba 6 channel radios and that was about the time Nextel and cellular started hitting. The plane would sometimes start wagging rudder and elevator with no input from me on field. after a few years of un-responsive flights and crashes I gave up. 30yrs later getting the urge again. Are radio failures/brown outs still common or did they get that worked out.

I had a few dings with my gear. Then I started to think, hmm, grass grows, so cut it before the crew fly, then changed out the wheels for bigger and in cases lighter ones. More radius less friction and likelyhood of finding the micropothole Nose end cockover, fuel out of plane, engine heavier afteer flight, longer landing gear legs.

25 yrs ago maybe models lost signal on the old 35mhz systems but extremely rare today on the modern 2.4 ghz radios, modern radios have a fail safe that closes the throttle in the rare case that the signal is lost so that the model will fall to the ground close by with the engine / motor closed (a legal requirement that the pilot / owner must adhere to or face legal prosecution if theres a serious accident) in 10 yrs of using the modern radios i have had one model go into fail safe (lost signal and the throttle closed) and it fell safely into a farmers field, we do not fly near built up areas with houses etc so we are as safe as we can be blake !

I mostly race my biggies now but back when I had planes boats trucks cars a few home made ones but I wanted to tell this story.. about 15 years ago I built this beautiful A10 warthog it was awesome I spent about 900 on it took me about a month on weekends putting it together.. the day came to go fly it I took off and it was flying great.. it was up about 5 minutes or so when this big falcon started trying to attack my plain so I was coming around to land it and that fckn bird actually grabbed my plain out of the air and flew off towards the highway.. oh shit we jumped in the car and took off trying to find that bird and nope.. he was gone.. so we turned around headed back to the park to get my stuff when this guy was on the side of the road putting my plane in his car.. I stopped and told him what was going on and that's my plane he said bull shit and took off.. we got his plate I filed a complaint.. so about a week later I get a call from the police department saying come pick up your plane.. it seems the guy was an off duty cop and was in a lot of trouble for his actions.. I got my plane back but I was so scared to fly it again it just looked cool on the wall until I sold it!!
