So, assuming all goes well, this video is going to be coming out on my birthday. And you know, as I get older, I find myself reminiscing about the good old days as it were. I've heard the phrase youth is wasted on the young, which is a pretty humorous phrase generally, but it's also somewhat true. You don't really know what you have till it's gone in that respect. It seems like one day you're out partying all night and showing up to work still drunk and on 2 hours of sleep, and the next you're a 30 something with a wife, kids and bad knees. And when it comes to the spirit of youth, I don't think any game captures the good and the bad quite as well as the 2006 Rockstar classic, Bully.

I’d rather not… Unless you get a passionate group that isn’t stuck with inputting DEI into the game, you’d rather let this one go. It’s better to have something good with fun memories rather than have something bad tarnish all of those good memories. Think of Disney with Star Wars. Star Wars back in the day only had one or two bad things before Disney bought it. They Christmas special, and people’s like or dislike of Jar Jar. Now there is hardly anything positive. Not blaming DEI on this one, Rockstar still had some of their original staff when they went to make Red Dead Redemption 2, which is why it feels familiar story-wise. By the time The Last of Us 2 was made, we had someone who wanted to do something different and thus without some of the same people, they made a game that would try to do something different. Only the story sucked. I (with others) watched with an open mind, but the game felt hollow and was just depressing to watch. With others games following suit after this one, we just saw game after game become less and less interesting.

My favorite character from Bully is Parker Ogilvie because if you listen to his dialogue he is actually a very kind person who reluctantly commits mischief in order to feel included among his friends. He gave money to a homeless person and still thinks about this random act of kindness, he will humbly accept defeat if you beat him at dodgeball, he is worrying about a younger sibling he sometimes has to care for, he tried to stop Gord from launching an attack after falling into a trap set by the greasers and finally my favorite quote from this game « I’m gonna feel bad about this tomorrow » when he turns hostile. My compliments to the writer and the voice actor

My favourite character is Beatrice. She's the only girl not immediately hostile to Jimmy from the game's beginning (though it's partly due to her having a crush on Jimmy) and despite her own obsessive career ambitions, she's kind enough to run a homework help club for everyone except Mandy. She also has one of the most savage retorts towards bullies: "If you wanna scare me, learn to multiply double digits." 😂

I firmly believe that San Andreas, Bully and Red Dead Redemption were the peak of Rockstar’s powers and they never returned to that. The balance between sincerity and irreverence was so perfect, everything they’ve done since has either been overwrought or crassly cynical. Bully especially had absurd and over the top plot lines but acted out by surprisingly nuanced and deep characters. It was big and absurd but also had genuine heart and never felt flippant about these kids. There was a strong theme of anti-authoritarianism that was bolstered by the way that every kid was a full person who was being deeply wronged by the way the system refused to acknowledge their depth and humanity. But even within that, the teachers themselves were complex and had backstories to tease out, because what are teachers if not kids that grew up to reflect the ways their teachers failed them? It was such a shame it got so misrepresented, mostly through dishonest implication by insisting it was GTA with school kids and implying it was similarly violent and a school shooting sim

The Bully franchise will always be the biggest piece of Missed potential in gaming history. This game was so much more endearing than you would expect and Its insane to me that after decades of The Sims being a proven success and Rockstars own critical and commercial success with the RDR franchise, that no one sees the potential in a School/College simulator game. My biggest dream sequel would be an 80s inspired series set in a huge College campus. Its almost insulting when games like manhunt get a sequel but Bully cant get a true next gen sequel idea. You can see the influence this game had on future titles with the Glass Breaking technology for Max payne 3 being originally created for Bully 2 and the Antagonize/Greet mechanic in RDR2 is literally from the original Bully.

I only spent two weeks at a shitty local boarding school and even just that was surprisingly similar to Bully. Teachers would tell you shit like "if you're really bad you'll get sent up to the house." which was like some punishment, and there were stories from kids about others who'd been sent there and never came back. The principle himself came into detention and said "if you're gonna bring drugs, don't get caught." Detention was from the ending of your last school period all the way to 11pm, Lights Out. then you had to walk to your room in the dark. I saw a guy almost get jumped by a group of girls over a pack of cigarettes, had my room broken into, a ton of stuff. it was ridiculous.

That implies that people never really grow up doesn't it? The best you can do is like the people who genuinely like you and avoid people who use you. Responsibly abuse the ones that want to be abused. And learn from it quickly. Alot of times you can notice patterns that very few people will notice. Learn law and medicine the most. Pick up MMA and dancing/music as a hobby if anything. Sports are great but in the end they become distractions. You do have to learn how to fight and when not to as well as dancing is good for the soul. I wished I'd dance more with girls. Not to be confused with clubbing. Although a little clubbing ain't bad. Good luck. You'll feel it in your bones at exactly 30. If it gets easier past 40 I haven't figured it out. We get old from knowing too much. And it's never enough. I'm a little surprised you didn't mention the unique thing that put Bully in my awareness in the first place--having a cannonically queer protagonist. Commander Shepard and the Sims were the only games at the time to tackle something similar and neither of them were about a specific person who wasn't meant to nessessarily be a direct avatar for the player. To be precise, the kissing mechanic lets you kiss some of the boys in the game (five--one per clique) in addition to the girls, which is pretty neat and it is also lowkey hilarious that for some reason that was never an element of the controversey that surrounded Bully! People are funny like that I guess There's also a quirk to the way the kissing mechanic works that doesn't show up if you only kiss girls through the whole game, but I find it amusing so bear with me: in order to be able to kiss a character, you need to have a good enough relationship with their faction to initiate a flirty interaction. But if you've kissed a character, they will always have a positive relationship with you regardless of your relationship to their faction. It's not noticable with the girls because the game never uses them for combat (plus it would instantly max out your trouble meter anyway). But since I went out of my way to kiss the boys during my playthrough, it made the twist at the end of the game where Gary turned all the cliques on me a lot funnier. I'd be surrounded by a swarm of hostile Jocks, only to have Kirby casually walk up and be like "hey... wanna make out", which would instantly grant me 200% health functionally for free. After which Kirby of course would threaten to beat me up if I tell his team he's gay. In front of all of them, while in a climatic showdown for the school's soul. Good job staying in the closet Kirb. Kissing really is kinda OP for health boosts--I never even felt the need to pay the piddling amount of money for a soda, I'd just constantly top up my health boost each day

Sequel to Bully: Heel. Story of a young adult Jimmy getting & progressing in odd jobs as he tries to pay for college. Underlying plots of him determining if he maintains a connection to his mother, the possibilities of marriage (and/or just living with someone), maintaining a house, all while trying to deal with corrupt law enforcement (and people in general), as well as the return of a more unhinged Gary (vengeful & a lot more malicious than before).

i think its safe to say its a very evident double standard… yes, it doesnt happen for a reason, but its still downplayed exactly the way it is in real life. too many grown men today still talk about getting with older women as a good thing-bc its seen as masculine and impressive to bag an adult woman instead of horribly sad that they were taken advantage of and abused. the game takes sa against girls pretty seriously whereas men and boys its the butt of a joke-seems about right especially for the time it came out. we can like a game and still point out its flaws.

By far the best game ive played in my late teens. The fact that every character in the game is important and the map isnt that big makes you pay attention to any interaction and routine. The music was made by Shawn Lee with a great emphasis on the bass and its a joy that its dynamic and changes depending on what you do or who you fight ( my fave is carnival date, which i use as ringtone). As a final note, Gary Rosenthal (Jimny Hopkins, the protagonists voice) has some vids on his channel playing bully and even jammin to the tune with his band. Great video, you made me remember so many great moments.

29:00 so the funny thing is, doing all tiers of punishments is required for 100% and unlocks an extra outfit. Unfortunately, Winter has unique punishments in the form of shoveling snow, and since the game never goes back to winter after you beat the story you can't do those punishments after that part of the story is over. AND those punishments count as a separate thing from the normal punishments for completion. TL;DR I did EVERYTHING in the game **except** those winter punishments and got locked out of 100%. And if I wanted to have a 100% save/the 100% achievement I'd have to do EVERYTHING over again including that. Truly the **worst** case of being locked out of completion I've ever faced in a game.

You don't even need a budget like GTA; Just a couple 100,000 to fund the team and just keep it contained like bully. I never get bored exploring Bullworth and it's surrounding areas because they made each area unique and interesting. There's so much bloat in modern day open worlds and Bully just did it right. Plus it felt cool to have the map unveil itself as the school year went on. It made it feel alive and I wish more games took a note out of Bully's book for how to achieve a fun open world. Instead of allowing the player to just go from one end to the other end of the map at the very beginning, drip feed areas to them so they can enjoy what's Infront of them instead of being overwhelmed with the entire map at once. You totally break GTA V's story by being able to go up to sandy shores as Michael and just start messing around his front yard, "Hello anybody home?" Why even have it. Then they made RDR2 where you can only access the entire other half of the map in the epilogue which is just too long to wait on showing content. there's a balance and I feel Bully achieved it wonderfully.

Sorry to break to y'all but with Dan Houser and the other OG creatives gone, there's not a chance in hell any of the new Rockstar games will even have anything close to heart and soul of the games pre RDR2. Current Rockstar doesn't have the balls to make a new Bully game or anything close to it.

A great game, still worth a playthrough. I used to speedrun this, and to speedrun a game the vibe has to be really good. I appreciate your opening. I used to tell people when starting the run "don't think of Jimmy as a bully, think of him as an antihero". Calling him a true bully is akin to reading the title to an article and then citing content in it. Whether or not Jimmy is a by-the-book bully is based on how you control him.

My favorite thing is how alive the world feels for such an old game. I've been playing it since release, even though I was only 12 back then and I always come back to it. Playing it again this week and it's the same feeling. I'm having fun doing a bit of roleplay and it's crazy how many options there are, even if they're small. Be a good student, go eat breakfast and lunch and go to class and then run around the field with the football team. Skip class and break into the girls dorm and pick on them. Sneak out after curfew to go hangout at the graveyard. Meet a girl and go on a date at the carnival. Throw firecrackers in the toilet, bouncy balls in the library and stink bombs in the comic book shop. It's all there and more as long as you have the imagination. It really is a great sandbox to just get lost in and forget you have responsibilities

It's a grand game, lightning in the bottle that hasn't been recaptured since. My favorite mission is helping Melvin out to get the Grottos and Gremlins character sheets back from the bullies and along the way getting help from the other nerds. Turns out why it's done so well is that it's actually based on real event where Houser bros in their youth had to get their D&D sheets back from a local bully. As for Jimmy its been stated by the creators that over time he'd of mellowed out and grown up, maybe becoming car salesman or something similar.

If you haven't, you should give the Yakuza series a try. They may not have the school setting, but they certainly have the more intimate open world environments, packed with life. The fact that some of the stories are masterpieces (Yakuza 0 is among my all-time favorite games, and I could watch the cut scenes as a movie) helps. Shenmue also had the smaller, more living environments, as well as more attention to the clock than most games. Bully honestly feels closer to those games than any of the other Rockstar games. At least to me.
