My favorite part of the knife bit is when he uses the knife as a rearview mirror. When I first watched this movie, that part is one of the few times I've done an actual spit-take. It's also a risky joke, as the rule of 3's says that joke should be over. Exception to every rule I guess.

Glad you're both reacting to this comedy masterpiece. FYI - the head of the crocodile gang at 2:30 is actually Feng Xiaogang - a director of several films in mainland China. The sound editing IS very good. A lot of early Jackie Chan films have absolutely amazing martial arts choreography, but they tend to use the same "whoosh, whoosh" sounds too much. This film doesn't take itself seriously at all, but it is very well crafted and produced. It has so many homages to other films, including Kung Fu and Hollywood films.

I LOOOOVE this movie. I remember watching it for the first time and having no idea what to expect. I was blown away. There's action, comedy, suspense, a bit of mystery to it, and a ton of originality. There are a ton of kung fu movies out there (many great ones), but this one tried to be different in order to stand out and it works. This movie is so much fun and one of my absolute favorites. Stephen Chow did something special here.

Those "kung-fu manuals" used to be everywhere when he was a kid, but they were always seen as being hokey or useless. This movie imagines what it would be like if they were all true. Brilliant film.

I'm convinced that the Hobo who sells those hokey manuals is an actual kung-fu legend who reached the peaked balance of his Ying-yang or became truly one with Buddha that he became an immortal and now searches for children who are born with the natural martial-arts prowess as told by the Landlady which is a 1 in a million case. He charges with a high price to see how willing the child would be to pursue the arts of kung-fu or that he can't find a job and still has to make a living for himself.

I absolutely loved the threatening scene where he's trying to find someone to pick on, but they just keep getting bigger and bigger. The squatting super tall guy, the super muscley old guy, then the even more muscley little kid. ;p gets me every time. Glad you like this one as well.

I'm from Amsterdam. I saw this movie when I was 19 in a coffeeshop where u can buy/smoke weed. They had a basement with lounge seats where u can watch movies. My cheeks hurt so much after seeing this movie. I was not prepared for how funny it is.

Stephen Chow is one of the only people I know who can direct, write, and star in their own film--yet it never comes across as a vanity project, or something similar. Anything he makes always feels so genuine, because they are truly good films in every manner. The man is a cinematic genius and no mistake. I think one of his biggest strengths is that he never makes the film all about him. While he stars in this film, he never fails to write amazing characters you care about instantly, with universally understandable characterisation --and the side characters always steal the show. They are by far the best and most interesting parts, and Stephen himself always ensures the best scenes and comedy go to the other actors.

The creator of this film has more like it if you're in the mood for more. A lot of people cite this one as their favorite, but my preference is for "Shaolin Soccer". The scene in this movie where he stomps on a soccer ball and says "no more soccer" is a response to folks asking him to make a sequel to that film.

BTW, when I went to Hong Kong I visited the restaurant that - according to some culinary guide - served the "original" exploding beef balls. Don't know if that's true, but anyway, they did explode - so much that I had to change my shirt afterwards, because it spilled all over me. Lesson learned: Never bite exploding beef balls, only eat in one piece 😅

​@@LeviBoldockit's not the same but it could be better for certain people. Example: Shrek and The hangover. Both have really great comedy and are extremely hilarious. But as a Mexican-American and Bilingual speaker. I love the Spanish versions of these two movies and I even think Shrek 1 is a lot funnier in spanish than English. Some jokes are changed to be more regional and they are great. Dubbed shouldn't be overlooked all the time. Some movies really put a lot of work into the dubbed versions. In shrek we have Eddie Murphy as Donkey but in the Mexican Spanish version, we have Eugenio Derbez which is an excellent comedian. Really great stuff.

The two musician killers use sound waves as weapons, which can also be understood as the setting of "chi" in kung fu movies, so it is infinite as long as the user's physical strength is not exhausted. The flying knives, shields (when defending), and the devil army you see are all visual manifestations of sound waves.

So happy to see a review of this film. Love it to this day. Another film along similar lines you might like is 2003's "The Blind Swordsman : Zatoichi". It has some humor, choreographed dance & music, and a good story, albeit a bit darker at times.

You both were really invested in the plot and scenes it was a delight to watch this again . I am not sure how close Samantha's Due Date is from now but my nephew's wife is Due to deliver was the 16th but now looks more like the 21st. "This is like... too easy for him!" The rascal landlord, played by Yuen Wah, is one of my favorite characters (alongside his abusive wife). He's been in a ton of martial arts movies, usually as a villain, and I always direct people to Eastern Condors, with Sammo Hung (it's a martial arts rip-off of Rambo 3 😉). Yuen Wah has a great fight in the finale.

"no more soccer" was in reference to another Stephen Chow movie: Shaolin Soccer. In the modern world, he and his fellow monkss have left the monastary to pursue civilian life. However, the monastary needed money so the group decided to join a soccer tournament. Hijinks ensued.

I don't know if you've seen all of the James Bond movies, but in 'The Man with the Golden Gun' Bond is rescued from a situation by his Chinese assistant Hip who happens to be taking his two nieces somewhere. The neices turn out to be martial artists and one of them is played by Qiu Yuen, the Landlady in this movie, 30 years later.

Coolie is the equivalent to a day worker. Poor, labourer who got paid daily by the amount of work they did. The term coolie is a phonetic translation from Cantonese meaning single layabout.

The Axe Gang was actually a real thing in 1920's Shanghai, they were dock workers that used axes in their work, hence the name.

Yuen Wah, the landlord, appeared in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” as the Old Man in Ta Lo. One of the Kung Fu Hustle movie posters can be seen in Shang-Chi’s bedroom. Finally, Marvel changed Shang-Chi’s original comic book finger rings to armbands/bracelets because it would align with the traditional Chinese iron rings as shown in Kung Fu Hustle and The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, plus it also distance them from Thano’s Gauntlet stones.

Rarely brought up in the comments to these reactions, but the Axe Gang was an actual gang in Shanghai in the 1920s, famous for their use of axes (obviously). The fancy clothes and dancing, though, is probably not part of actual gang's routine. 😆

"Journey to the West" was pretty bad. It was aimed for money and not art, many scenes dragging so long so they could split one movie into two. Also it stole many quotes from other movies, yet younger audiences think they were originated so JTTW took all the credit.
