It's called symphonic /concert/ wind band. The difference between band and orchestra isn't just about not having strings, but also about using different instruments that arent in orchestra - that means saxophones, euphoniums. Also some instruments, especially clarinets and brass are multiplied in band - 10 clarinets instead of two, etc.

The first minute and a half of this music is the Russian Orthodox troparion of the Epiphany.
I’m not a fan of the balance of this band, too much woodwind, not enough brass. Especially for a piece of music that is going through the Russian Campaign of 1812. This piece was commissioned by Tsar Alexander I, written by Tchaikovsky, both to mark the consecration of the new Cathedral to Christ the Savior, and to play back the war in which Russia defeated the French. I played French Horn for almost 8 years, and been a Marine for almost one year, and following the President’s Own for almost 4 years, I feel safe in saying my opinion. One thing to note about Russian music, they use Rubato (slowing down and speeding up), tonal contrast (difference in sounds to show musical progression) and dynamic contrast (going between loud and soft and loud to emphasize certain parts of music) together, in order to more richly demonstrate the point of the music. Tchaikovsky was a Russian composer, and wrote several great pieces of music, all of which demand rubato, tonal contrast, and dynamic contrast to the highest degree. The interpretation was okay, but nowhere near enough Rubato or dynamic contrast for a Russian piece, (especially for Tchaikovsky), it’s amazing playing, but it’s not my favorite performance of this piece. The balance of the band itself was very woodwind heavy, even in the fanfare, which ruined the tonal contrast that helps this piece progress.

@@LyleFrancisDelp bit hard to explain in what's not my primary language ;-), but making music is making the score live rather than just playing the notes. Mind you, making the score live is the conductor's job.
@LyleFrancisDelp4 жыл бұрын
@@charlesmallo I understand that, but could you please be specific, rather than so general. It's easy to say what you say, but putting it into concrete ideas and methods is a bit more difficult. I think the band played it beautifully, but the outdoor acoustic does take something from the overall effect.
