No it wouldn’t. What a crock. I want a set to replace the S series pickups made over seas in an S2 series guitar that is made in the same American plant but I have to settle for the cheaper not as good sounding 58/15 LT pick ups. Thats why I haven’t purchased a PRS guitar as I don’t like the lack of choice to get the pickups I want for the guitar I want.

To start, they sound great. I am a proud prs owner and respect a lot of what he has to say. I also have a background in physics and thought I was really going to enjoy his explanation. I was totally lost with his layman description of what they tried to do. I'm going to stick with the idea that they sprinkle ground unicorn horn on the guitars before finishing them with that patent V12 finish.
@jvin248
@jvin248 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, less layman magic and more engineering. How is the resistance, capacitance, and inductance being adjusted? Scatter winding? And what about the pots and caps that layman ignore when upgrading pickups but are as much of the tone output as the pickups themselves... which I heard the Mayer S-type puts more factory attention to those parts because their adjustment is what finally got Mayer's approval of the platform.
@ericwong1972

Agree. Layman explanation was beyond layman. Sounds like he targets a specific resonance frequency he wants for each pickup by adjusting the inductance and capacitance accordingly. So just better quality control/consistency..

Hi there! I believe his intent is to put into words what a layman would like understand about the different qualities/aspects of a pickup and how PRS can consistently produce pickups that sound "good" and just the way that they (or you) want them to sound. His intent is NOT to tell you how to reproduce what they have spent time and resources figuring out.

Got my first PRS this week. And I never in my life thought I would hear a guitar having what I would consider a perfect voicing in the pickups. I have more expensive guitars and I have to say my PRS is my #1 go-to guitar right now and I am sure it will continue to be. The craftsmanship far far exceeded my expectations. And it is what I have expected out of a guitar the past 25 years but never got until now. Thank you Paul for the attention to detail you have put in creating this brand of guitars. I have learned about the process your factories go through with each guitar and I am just amazed. Many blessings to you and to your people for making the perfect guitar for me and for many others.

Good comparison between the two guitars but unfortunately what most people will take away from this is that different guitars and types of pickups sound different. It would be neat if they could actually demonstrate the note that the pickups are resonating at and then show how that is consistent in all the new McCarty guitars and the same for each model. Then, grab a couple older guitars and show that the pre-TCI vary from guitar to guitar. That’s the only to really show this IMO. Excellent sounding guitars either way! Love PRS

riheg I had a custom shop Les Paul. Sold it. Still have my PRS 594 though - it’s just better. Better quality, better upper fret access with the double cut. More clarity and definition without being harsh or losing that vintage LP style bite. Pickups aren’t as much of the equation as the pickup building industry would have you believe. I’ve swapped pickups in several guitars but at the end of the day the guitar still sounds like the same instrument. It may have a slightly different eq or output but still sounds like the same guitar. Humbuckers in a strat don’t make it a Les Paul. Pickups can make a difference but comparing the non TCI and TCI ones I don’t think you’d hear a difference that was solely from the pickups. I played 8 or 9 different 594s the day I bought mine and they were almost exactly the same tone across the board. Biggest difference for me was single and double cut models and even that was pretty small differences.

PAUL - I know this is an older video. But it popped up and I had to leave a comment regarding the 58/15 LT pickups. First of all, I love them. Second of all, I am glad you released them for sale separately recently. BUT, I find it hard to believe that any pickups, especially a $500 pair, would not include a wiring diagram in the box. To make matters worse, there is no accurate info on the PRS site or anywhere else on the web. Worse yet, apparently these pickups have different wiring than other PRS pickups. The neck and bridge pickups do not even have the same color wires! The folks at Sweetwater (where I bought the pickups) did not know what the deal is. Finally I got some info from a luthier that I hope is accurate. Crazy wiring that makes no sense. I love PRS products but am not at all happy with the inconsideration of PRS on the 58/15 LT pickups.

Thank you for putting into words, something I have found difficult to describe. I have used words like woody, Spanky (to describe a humbucker vs strat pickup. But even with in that, there is a further level of sound. I like pickups that can sustain forever and by just turning the angle of the guitar, the harmonic note takes over. That kind of control with clarity and harmonics (the frequency of the pickup), can really define an instrument. Thank you Paul for taking every step of the guitar building process to the next level!!

I suspect the TCI process is being used to give a little more musicality/sweetness to the delivery of tone in each of the core USA guitar models. It might be one of those subtle but pleasing to hear differences that we’ll only really understand when given the opportunity to compare a 2019 model with a 2020 model as they arrive at the dealers throughout 2020.

One without the label TCI will still have “a voice”. My understanding is that TCI is PRS’s effort to manufacture a pickup with a controlled, and specific voice.
@antoniomonteiro1203

Every pickup has its inductance (L) and a distributed group of small capacitances (Ci). And also a series resistance (R). This is regardless of someone try to adjust them (tune). So, as per my interpretation of this video, this means at PRS they work, amongst other things, in trying to get the response curve of the pickup (as it is a transducer) adapted to each position in each guitar. I guess they mean: "we don't just try from a box of pickups which one sounds better". To me, TCI is just a marketing acronym once I believe every brand does the same, putting in this aspect more or less effort.

I believe the term Paul should have used was "timbre", not note....each pickup has it's own "timbre"...a musical character separate from pitch or dynamics.
@nicholasmullins3693
@nicholasmullins3693 4 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Timbre is still, to an extent, ruled by the audible spectrum of frequencies. All of these frequencies can technically be "notes". If this guitar has a resonant frequency at say, 200hz and prominent harmonics at say, 800hz and 1000hz, those are all technically... *notes*. Just not necessarily a named note on a 12 tet scale like we're used to.

TCI strikes me as not much more than a gimmicky name for matching pickups to a guitar ... much like Leo Fender and every other maker does when designing a guitar. With that said I I love my Custom 22 and have a Paul's Guitar on the way which no doubt will be a stellar and a sonic dream machine as well. TCI or not ... PRS makes out of this world guitars.

'TCI' is a fancy name for what every other pickup manufacturer calls 'voicing'. PRS didn't 'figure out' any new secret. Pickup design is not rocket science, it's a pretty well understood field, and has been for decades.

I ordered the SE Paul's Guitar. I'll pay 2 years 4 it but I must have this guitar because it's a Paul's Guitar and I think these TCI pickups are crazy. I am really looking forward to test it by myself with the mini switches and on the H&K Tubemeister. I think this could be working very well because amp and guitar both want the same. They want to show all the frequencies of your playing but not meshing it together. It tries to "harmonize" it showing the low parts of high tones and the higher parts of the bass. The parts you often don't even realize are shown now like with an EQ together with a Sound Retriever. I think it could make the guitar more singing than screaming. Just doing the right thing on the right moment. I am still a beginner and learning to play the guitar but this combination feels the right one for me. Let's wait and see^^ Greetings from Germany🤘

Probably just the laymen’s confusion, but I cannot understand how having a consistent “note” could be good- what if it conflicts with the key? This makes me think he’s using the term “note” in a very loose way for lack of a better term. Surely it can’t mean a specific pitch. Sounds more or less like he’s saying they’re selecting the pickup’s resonant frequency, but again I can’t see how that’s a set positive thing. Would like to hear him really explain it.
@joebrennan52
@joebrennan52 4 жыл бұрын
Well, if you're manipulating an EQ, you're tuning a "note" without actually messing around with specific pitches so to speak. By "note" I think he means more along the lines of "woody notes" in wine or something like that. I think what he's trying to say is that they've found a way to more specifically and accurately EQ a pickup.

i though the same thing. my translation of his word "note" would be "timbre". as in the balance across the frequency spectrum of harmonics and fundamental resonance at any pitch on the guitar string. eg the "voice" of the instrument. just like a clarinet sounds distinct from an oboe playing the same pitches, etc.
@guitarsruinlives4497

tmuka You’re right. The word that Paul describes is ‘timbre’ (said ‘tamber’). They basically found the ‘magic sauce’ to computing the exact wind for the time they want. It is probably a little bit gimmicky and not all that special, but it goes without saying that they make the best guitars (in my opinion).

Yeah. I'm sticking with Fender, so sorry. ;) The sound is too thick for my thing I guess. Like a spread sound somehow. It's unique, but it's not me I guess.

I much preferred the Silver Sky (sound wise) as it was without the TCI. I think, the guitar should be allowed to do what it wants rather than add only 1 vowel to everything it says. On the Humbuckers, Paul I think you should make the DGT humbucking & single coil sounds available on more of your guitars. Those things sound beautiful as do your 85/15s 594 with pickups voiced like the DGT ones maybe?

Sounds great... maybe a touch too sterile at times.... I love my Mojotones in the DW CE24 FLOYD..... but... I look at these pickups on my next „baby“. THX PAUL for all your great work and efforts. ENJOY🎸🎸🎸👍🏻

Seems like people are kind of debating on the effectiveness of TCIs, but TCI thing is simply about trying to use different pickups by each lineup even when they looks alike. It's not about making better pickups, but about making ones which Paul thinks that best matches the purpose of the guitar lineups. So If you don't like the sound of TCIs, then simply swap it out. You can have different tastes from those of Paul's. I think that's it. But think about it. No many manufacturers are trying to design pickups in details for the guitars. Pickup makers are making good pickups, but it's quite unpredictable whether they would still sound good in your guitar untill you actually install them. And Many guitar makers are 'seemingly' just dropping random pickups in random guitars, and when they put SD or Dimarzio they raise the price even more than what the pickups are worth. Honestly, unless the guitar is signature model, guitar brand's default pickups are mounted. Well it's good to hear that PRS had to make pickups specific to each Models. It sounds like they are trying to make products worth buyiung than just making good guitars with whatever hardwares.

I have a 2017 509 and it is better and more inspiring than any of my other 5 PRS Guitars, by the way my least expensive PRS is the new SE Paul’s Guitar with TCI like my Silver “Golden” Sky and just as nice for $1500 less

Thanks for the explanation paul. I just love the whole 2020 line up. Now that your able to tune these just the way you want to, do you think you might toss a set in the vela? I love the way it sounds now but I think it could be a little more twangy and jangly. Maybe a little more country rock.

I love the work that PRS dose. But yes i said But next time just say we created a better. TCI is just a complex way of saying we made a pickup that we at PRS believe to be worthy of the PRS branding and in truth we are not doing something new we are just branding old concepts with new names. TCI Seriously!!!

I think the fact that PRS have said they have a new technique for making pickups and have titled it TCI - tuned capacitance inductance indicates it is rather more than just choosing the right specification. I believe they have a method of fine tuning every pickup they make. It may even involve a few extra components added to the pickup.

As a layman I don’t understand how this is different than a pickup maker trying many different combinations of wire gauge, wire coating, winding pattern, bobbin height, windings per bobbin, mismatched windings on humbuckers, and on and on...and analyzing the frequency/tonal/character difference of all those combinations in the same guitar.
