Watch her in Drums Along the Mohawk with Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert. Such a great movie. The part where she's sitting on her bed, ordering Indians around, who are supposed to be attacking her and her house, is hilarious.

She was a great scene stealer--a great comic actress.

How sad that Edna Mae died so young, and on her birthday also! I wish TCM had been able to interview people who knew her. I would’ve loved to of known more about her personality off the screen. It’s obvious that she had a sense of humor, because she played comedies so well. I think I love her the best and David Copperfield, but in reality I have loved all of her movies!

Edna May Oliver was an exceptional comedianne and had amazing music talents in voice and piano. One of my favourite movies, "Pride and Prejudice" released in 1940 had a stellar cast including super talents, Massachusetts born Edna May Oliver and British actor/comedian Melville Cooper who brought an immense amount of humour to this unforgettable film.

Edna May Oliver may just be my all-time favourite character actor, just brilliant, sadly just about, if not everyone who ever warked with her has now passed away, even Karen Morley was 93 when she passed nearly 12 years ago.

AssinnippiJack She was even considered for the Wicked Witch of the West but felt that everyone knew under her gruff exterior was a pussy cat and she wouldn't be believable.

THE best character actor! I will always rewatch a movie if she’s in it. She stole every scene she was in. Especially as Lady Catherine and Aunt March. One of my favorites.

Spitting image of Carol Burnett, I'd say, Rebe19668!! Have always loved old movies, and Edna May Oliver is one of my favorite actresses...
@Bronco46tube9 жыл бұрын
***** Interesting observation. I'm not sure I agree that she's the spitting image. But wouldn't they have been great together. No one else would want to be on stage with them; they'd steal the whole show.

Agree Bronco46tube, tho' I don't know how anyone could ever top the threesome of Carol Burnett, Harvey Korman, and Tim Conway.

I don't in an odd way she can be kind of hot in a non-glamarous sense in certain times. I will admit though in the climax of A Tale of Two Cities she kept reminding me of Ian McKellen in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring when he was confronting the Balrog.

One of THE greatest character actresses. She was so good in "Drums Along the Mohawk". I'm not sure that she didn't deserve it more than Hattie McDaniel. Edna's part was far more challenging and had greater range. But the Academy wanted to make a statement.

+Bronco46tube I can't think of a film she appeared in where she wasn't the high point of it. And for every cliched old maid role she played, she could add incredible depth, passion and strength when required. There is no one remotely like her in film today.
@bduhe2196 жыл бұрын
like Nancy Walker, when she appeared on television shows. whatever was going on, she was the sole attention of the scene.

Bronco46tube I don’t agree. Hattie McDaniel was the only sensible one- without illusions in the entire movie. If I were to watch GWTW now it would be to see her.
