The 97th Rory Sutherland interview I have watched this week.

He blew up on my feed a few days ago and no joke I’ve listened to at least 15 hours of him talking while pottering about the house or shopping. He is a wonderful speaker, I could listen to him read the phone book

One of the best Sutherland interviews and it must be the first host to get a word in. Nice to actually get Sutherland to unpack his concepts a little deeper than usual.

Really good conversation. Good hosting as well - hosts with Rory on have a tendency to let him ramble, zigzag and dominate the conversation, but you kept him honest - nice work

You really don't need to put the "please subscribe" advert interruption so often, like every 15 minutes, and I think it's the exact same every time. And you do it in the middle of a sentence. It's so disruptive and takes you out of the conversation. It's unnecessary and I don't think it is helpful. Once during the podcast and then perhaps at the end, as a reminder, even if it's the same clip used both times, would be enough. And the one in the middle could be better placed than in the middle of a sentence.

Really good Podcast with Rory - Thanks for that. One request for likes/subs is enough though (perhaps somewhere in the middle) after the third request I felt like not doing so. Four is OTT. Keep up the good work. 👍

Good interview, nice job matching Rory's energy and responding to his humour. Quite a few podcast hosts are a bit po-faced, or just too slow to keep up with the flow, and its a bit embarassing. Occasionally I think he's humouring some of those podcast hosts, but this seemed like a proper conversation.

Hi Common Sense guy (didn't catch your name, sorry). Loved the interview. I'm a complete Rory nut and evangelist so I watch everything he appears on, so thanks for having him on again. And I really appreciated your retort that there actually aren't any things you 'can't talk about anymore', I think you had him cornered there a little bit! 😂😅

Coming from someone who works whenever and wherever he pleases, jets between multiple homes, and hasn't punched a traditional timecard in decades, Musk's stance on remote work is like a person in a helicopter telling people stuck in traffic they should be grateful for their commute. His critique of the 'laptop class' rings hollow when he exercises more workplace flexibility than perhaps anyone on Earth. Additionally, his stance conveniently aligns with the interests of commercial real estate investors and downtown business districts. When billionaires bemoan remote work, follow the money - empty office buildings and quiet downtown lunch spots affect their bottom line far more than worker wellbeing. They're not concerned about fairness; they're concerned about their real estate portfolios

Very interesting conversation with Rory who I just recently found out about which I am very happy about. I do have to add some friendly observations that it was a bit difficult to concentrate on with the continuous acknowledgements after nearly every sentence that Rory made, either by a yeah, hmmm, or a giggle.........might be better not to have those short acknowledgements every so often. Also no need to cut to you when you just say hmmm....or yeah....only cut to your take when you make a point or have a question as the interviewer. I love the casual format but maybe introducing a table between you and your guests might frame and concentrate the energy of the conversation. Once more these are respectful observations from a user and I am by no way an expert at all. So maybe what I have observed or felt has no real foundation. Congratulations on your podcast and this very interesting conversation. I look forward to your future podcast.

Why would Dominic Cummings and his wife stuck in a flat using Waitrose delivery be any different from any otther family in the country in the same circumstances? "Tax is for the little people" and "lockdown was for little people". I live in a flat without a garden and don't drive - I have no issue with a few drinks. It was the lack of distancing. I was working 18 hour days in my livingroom. If the rules were rubbish they should have changed the rules for everybody. Did we really want all the people running the country sick at once? Was there anyhting about their job that made getting everyone in the building into the same room at the same time? When we started back at the office we had distancing "passing places" on the stair. I could understand the PM needed his PPS next to him all day... the Christmas Zoom Quiz was fine with me. Much like Starmer's beer with his curry. Don't let the fact that Cummings' Durham accomodation had had its use changed without planning consent and Council Tax wasn't being paid on it by his parents-in-law, despite being multi-millionaires and one a non-doml put you off his clan either. Don't mention the colonial quelling of Mao Mao Uprising or Climate Change either. Ascribing the acts of the family to concern for others is nonsense - it was pure exceptionalism. "If he used the petrol app - he wouldn't come into contact with anyone" did he? has he ever claimed that?- citation? now you are just making stuff up.

When people say "we're not allowed talk about..." What they are saying is "if I speak about.... I get abuse from people" or "if I don't agree with the political consensus of the left my life is made miserable". The same would be true for people who are left leaning in right leaning areas. Most cities are left leaning even though they are a minority of the population as a whole but if you live in a city and your opinions differ you feel silenced. I don't agree that that's ok. If anyone is allowed to express their political opinions then all people must be allowed to and treated with the same respect

1:40:37 if cummings had said "while I admit that I did it, I did it for a good reason, however in acknowledgement that other people may have been fined for doing the same as me, I will pay the £2k fine." So many other people got fined and it was the double standard that really annoyed people. As a political strategist he should have known this and the fact that he didn't also shows that he was pretty rubbish at his job too.

My theory is he didn't get the fax for expediency. There are studies that suggest that we remember what we read at a better rate if it's on paper as apposed to on a screen. As someone with ADHD I well believe this. Screen info does not stick for me in the same way. Written copy is solid and better to cognitively work with. It may not be quicker but it is easier. He's not saving time he's saving cognitive load and he has an PA to do the leg work. I think it's pretty clever

I watch a lot of Rory and I like him. I had no intention of subscribing, as this seems like a fairly typical sycophantic chat, but then you politely and quite deftly pushed back on the 'we are not allowed to speak about immigration' trope and I was really impressed. Just to confirm I'm 40 yrs old and I remember when Farage & UKIP came on the scene to parasitize our politics as a teenager, and the topic has never fallen off the agenda since. However, migration remains essential & broadly beneficial, which is why we should probably ask if it is time to stop discussing it. Or at the very least start saying something interesting about it. For instance 'what you are not allowed to say' is that: a child born in Uganda is not responcible for where they were born & has just much right to live in the UK as my kids, if they want to.
@cobbler91138 ай бұрын
I think the issues surrounding immigration at the moment that alarm people are the sheer numbers (over 500k net per year the last couple of years) and our country’s (in)ability to cope with that. I believe it was the ONS who basically said that to keep house prices where they’re at now, we would to build 382,000 homes a year, every year to accommodate that. This is before we get into infrastructure and expansion of public services. We just do not have the capacity to do that unless you want to rebuild Victorian style slums or turn this green and pleasant land into a giant Mumbai. Neither will be very popular to put it mildly. By all means, let’s have migration, but let’s be much stricter and more sensible about who comes in.
@julianchase957 ай бұрын
Your last sentence doesn’t add up. Giving effectively everybody “the right” to live in the UK doesn’t work, especially as a huge proportion of immigrants are net recipients of UK largesse, rather than contributors.
