Mike, I compliment you for your intestinal fortitude in taking these gearboxes apart and inspecting them with such expertise and skill. One of these gearboxes would send me running for the hills with their complexity and W. Heath Robinson like construction.

Yrs ago i had a main shaft go on this particular box disco box in a series III with s 300tdi - rather than aff n faff with it got a price from dave Ashcroft and shipped it over for a new reckoned box. The new one had a cross drilled main shaft for better lubrication. I on its return i put a oil splash catcher inside the rear back plate on the transfer box to ensure the total gubbins were well oiled for the future The short shifter gearstick in a defender cab - makes a hell of a difference with little adaptation & its much more driveable. It seems someone was driving with low / no oil. Happy Easter to you

hello Mike, greetings from England, i used to get my parts from Dingocraft in the 80s and 90s, its a FAB shop just near Hywcombe ten miles from me, i think an Ashcroft replacement g/box is the answer if shipping is not too expensive, if the clowns had changed the oil at regular intervals i don't think this would have happened

Interesting video Mike. My mate was part of the very small team that engineered the original R380 (Rover - 380Nm torque capacity, as you probably know). The joke was that it should have been called the R340, for reasons you can probably figure out.

Good to see, all three R380s I have stripped due to bearing failures have been ruined, just like yours, I just bought a new unit from Ashcroft's, freight to Northern Norway WA expensive, and I incur the core charge, but it's a lot cheaper than buying bits. Two of mine were absolutely destroyed, a little bit of damage on everything basically.
@BritannicaRestorations

I just looked at some prices This needs a new casing as the front bearing has chattered in the housing The casings are line bored, so having JP sleeve the bearing would be risky as it has to be in line with the rear bearing LR are giving a price of £550 for the casing, but zero stock - assumed obsolete New Td5 boxes - Obsolete

If you do send it off for a reco unit - you'll need to bang it back together for a exchange unit. If its being heavily driven you can get HD bearings and shafts upon request.
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 3 ай бұрын
It will cost more to send it back to the UK from Canada than the UK core charge, and even then, we would still lose the core charge as it is too far gone.

LR had a habit of under engineering gearboxes from the latter series then defenders, eg., LT76. I can understand the S1 since it had a 1.6 then 2 litre engine. They kept up the tradition.

So it is written, the r380 is good for 380nm torque and lots of people tune the td5 to probably that and beyond. Quite often more torque than a V8 and I think that's game over for a lot of the gearboxes. You've probably covered this Mike but just my 2 pence worth. Always enjoy your gearbox and engine strip down and rebuilds. Can't do too many of them it's interesting every time

halo mike, greatly apreciate to see a gearbox again. if by a chance a series 2 gearbox is in your ER would be nice to put it on air. mine is behaving funny. first gear ratling when oil is hot, if i push the clotch it rattles, oilpressure warning light is turning on when the oil is hot, etc etc. but gearbox would be great - chears
