The sail (conning tower) is from the original sub & was saved when this sub was salvaged in 1993, the body is concrete.

We were stationed at Kings Bay from 2014-2017, and in Jacksonville from 2017-2018. Downtown Saint Mary’s has some of the best fishing around! It’s crazy to see you explore a town we knew very well for years! Thank you for sharing its small town charm with the world ❤️

Good morning, Adam! The USS George Bancroft exhibit is not the actual submarine, the only part that is authentic is the sail. Members of the community pitched in to construct an earthen hull which was covered with black gunite, a mixture of cement, sand and water. Columbo would be proud!

Hey, I was on that sub for five years (a long time ago). We used to sail through the water, though, not dirt. We crossed the Atlantic Ocean several times, and made patrols in the north Atlantic and also in the Mediterranean.

Adam, I live here in St Marys, and Fun fact: the burning you smelled wasn't a controlled burn. The okeefanokee swamp ha shad a bad wildfire raging for a while and the wind carries the smoke over to the coast.

When I was stationed in Groton, Ct., I worked on the Bancroft's Sister Ship, the USS Kamehameha SSBN-642. When my Tour of Duty ended in Groton, Ct; I was stationed on USS Jacksonville SSN-699. We (the ship and crew of SSN-699) spent nearly a month in St. Mary's, performing emergency repairs to SSN-699. The Bancroft was decommissioned the day before my 22nd birthday, on 21 September, 1993 (we were there in December, 1992). So, the part you see as a "submarine" is actually a concrete sculpture. The only parts of the submarine on display are: the Sail (conning tower with fairwater planes), and WLR-9 early warning detector (the bump-thing on the forward bow). It's pretty cool to meet them old guys, who used ta work... (here, there, etc...).

G'day Adam we have our own Submarine sitting in a park as well here in Australia, its the HMAS Otway (S 59) an Oberon-class submarine of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). One of the first four Oberon-class boats ordered for the RAN, Otway was built in Scotland during the mid-1960s, and commissioned into naval service in 1968. The submarine was decommissioned in 1994. The submarine's upper casing, fin, and stern are preserved at Holbrook, New South Wales.

Awesome that you visited St. Marys! my husband and I are from there! So much history there! We live in Jacksonville now, so I loved watching this video and seeing 2 places I know very well! As for that submarine, the only real part of the sub is the top part. The whole bottom is concrete! but the top part is from the actual sub!! Thank you for all your awesome vlogs! Hi Adam! I’ve recently started watching your vlogs. The video of the submarine caught my eye. Lol I use to live in st. Mary’s GA. My husband was a submariner at kings bay. The sub that’s seems wedged in the ground is not whole. It’s just the top which is called the sail. Didn’t know if you knew that or found out later. I loved living there. The cemetery was my favorite place to go. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
