Wonderful. I haven’t heard this since I sang in chapel at school over 55 years ago. I loved it then and it’s wonderful to hear it again.

Took Grandchildren to St Alban's Abbey on Sunday, they were fascinated. I was thrilled when this struck up, having sung it many times in my school chapel,, Bishop Wordsworth's School, 1950s-60s, and a few times in Salisbury Cathedral. I have always found it Spine Chilling!

I love singing it, I especially love when I have to sing "The holy church throughout all the world doth acknowledge thee" and "thou art the king of glory o Christ!" I LOVE IT! This was a standard in the repertoire of my boys' choir at St. Paul's Cathedral in Boston many years ago, and it uplifted me joyfully whenever we sung it, particularly for the way Stanford ingeniously diversified his musical passages at various speeds while keeping the same tempo throughout the piece. The solo quartet at "We therefore praise thee..." was particularly inspiring. Thanks for posting this classic.

It's odd that others feel that the orchestra overpowered the Tenors/Basses. What has struck me--from the very first hearing--was the excellent balance between singers and orchestra. THIS, in my opinion, is THE way to do this piece. The Brits have the right idea: perform a piece with plenty of power, but put some restraint in it too. We Americans aren't that good at restraint. I thank you for showing us the way.

Word to the wise: if searching for sheet music for this piece on IMSLP or similar sites, be sure to specify Opus 10, not Opus 66. Opus 10 is a complete set of music for "The Morning and Evening Service together with the Office of Holy Communion in B flat." If you search "Stanford Te Deum," it will probably take you to Opus 66, which is a Te Deum Laudamus in B-flat, but it's a standalone piece with Latin text.

That's a very good tip. There seems to be a bit of confusion about this on the Internet, so it needed to be said. Unfortunately, KZbin compounds the confusion in a couple ways: They've erroneously tagged onto morphthing1's description an attribution of the Chandos (Naxos) / Hickox recording, which this isn't, then again by saying it's Op. 66 -- which the Hickox recording does not claim. Ironic, given the last line of the Te Deum.

This is a wonderful orchestral arrangement.
@richdawes664 жыл бұрын
Not an arrangement---I believe Stanford orchestrated his service settings himself. And quite well I would add. If you are familair with this music as typically performed with organ, you might agree with me that the published reduction could have afforded just a few more of the little details that got dropped, given a reasonably capable organist. But then, the organ accompaniments were presumable also penned by Stanford, so I'm not judging harshly.

I remember my choir master weeping as the decision was made to have happy clappy choruses and guitars. That was in the 1970s. Not been the same since, but at least then it wasn’t amplified. Too loud man, now, too loud. The only good thing to come out of it, when we ever get to sing a proper hymn, is that the words are cast onto a screen, and we can sing with good posture (without it being an effort), because you have to hold your head up to read the words!

Simple answer: The Te Deum is traditionally a different or even new-composed setting for each service. Boyce 1837, Stanford 1902, Parry 1911, Vaughan-Williams 1937 and Walton 1953......I wonder who'll be entrusted for the next time??

It seems churlish to criticise, but to my ears the orchestra could have done with its volume turning down from 11. A skilled organist will select a suitable "full organ" for choral accompaniment so that even at ff it'll still let all parts shine through. Here, the trebles were clear but the underparts disappeared beneath the orchestra - except in the solos which were well restrained. As I say, maybe a personal view - and the choir was very good indeed. Thanks for a great post.

I won't give it a "thumbs-down", but this is pretty boring music. If not for the orchestra and big organ it would be pretty plain - just look at the score. I don't find much interesting in it. It's a big, noisy paean to God (yes, I know that's what it's supposed to be)
@gordonjohnston7586 жыл бұрын
But if it's supposed to be a bit, noisy paean to God, and that's what it's supposed to be, then what's the problem? I don't think this is the height of western music, but for a "pièce d'occasion", it is perfectly suited to its purpose.
@alansutton70464 жыл бұрын
Well, you know what to do then: write a more interesting Te Deum yourself. Just remember though that it should be a noisy paean to God, so don't write anything quiet or gloomy
@jonb4020 Жыл бұрын
You clearly haven't sung it as a treble in a cathedral choir then. It's a great sing, not in the least boring and we really enjoyed it, as with most of Stanford's music.
