This is my review for the Teenage Engineering EP-133 K.O. II. As a hip hop sampling based producer. I have a bit of a fresh prospective on how a drum sampler should work.

If this existed when I was 16 years old, I’d have been in heaven. At $300, even watching the videos I understand how it works. I don’t need this (club deluge) but this is a superb and inspiring object for anyone of any age to get into sampling and come out with musical and fun results. Imagine being a kid geeking out to this? It’s at a price point kids can touch. (How much is a Nintendo switch these days)?

Yep when I was 10 my parents got me a Casio SK-1 and I've been obsessed with sampling ever since. I bet considering inflation since 1985, the EP-133 comes in at a similar price point as that Casio

I think you are nailing the "toy" aspect of Teenage Engineering products in general. They don't look like they are made for professional musicians. They look like consumer tech that is primarily about aesthetics. I don't know any real electronic musicians that would use any of their equipment. I've been a producer for 30 yrs or so and run a semi infamous record label fwiw

They’re not encoders, they’re potentiometers. They stop because it’s basically a variable voltage divider that goes from 0V to whatever the internal max voltage is and that gets plumbed to an ADC prob thru a mux. The reason for doing this? Pure cost savings. You can have a single ADC line on the micro with a multiplexer scanning the pots. With encoders you need minimum two lines and if you do two lines you do well to have an interrupt tied to one. If you don’t wanna dick with that you use grey code encoders which are 4 lines but you always always know where you are from 0-15. Anyhow engineer rant over, it’s cheap that’s why they did it that way. Also fader gate. IMHO either you break the wiper sled when you install it or you don’t. Don’t push hard, or maybe file the inside of the cap a bit to make it slip on easier. It looks like a really cheap linear pot.

Awesome video dude. My unit arrives soon, was wondering if you could post a video of how you installed the fader knob? As there might be a trick to it that would be very helpful to myself and others, to maybe place it in a certain way to reduce the possibility of adding too much pressure, which seems to be where the issue people are having comes from. Thanks again, and keep busting out these awesome videos.

I wouldn't be surprised if this gets a refresh with an SD card slot included. It seems like a really great gateway into the TE ecosystem for the overall price. I got mine as a beginner with the intention of working up to the 404 or MPC. I like the KO's design (a big part for me) plus the price being a sweet spot of affordability felt more reasonable than what Roland was offering. Super excited to play around with making my own soundscapes.

If not, all the other companies are paying attention and I can absolutely promise, this class of product with an SD card slot, etc will come out for around the same $300 price point. There is a reason this product sold out and for those reasons, other companies are very much paying attention.

Bruh, this is a perfect device for people starting to get into music imo. Of course there is some flaws there is never going to be the "perfect" beat box. But i'd love to see this in the hands of kids and teens who could obviously not afford 400-1000 $ units like MPC's or Elektron boxes. I actually dont like TE very much at all but I even bought one, i mean common......300 bucks? no brainer. I just wanna make music that will make your mom drop it like its hot "G"

Yep after much deliberation there will be one under the tree for my 13 year old son. He wanted a PO-33 but imho this thing looks less frustrating than the PO and more capable. I have the KO it’s cool, but this is better. Almost bought him the SP404 MK2 but I get a great B2B discount that made these TE boxes $224 hard to pass up. Also get the 404 cheaper but worried the learning curve may be too steep and he’ll lose interest.

Given how much they crammed into this one at $300, I expect a refresh for around $399 to include at least some SD card slot, endless encoders, and more features, especially since it sold out. I still like for longevity an MPC One secondhand, but this isn't terrible for what it is. I do hope they come out with a slightly higher end version which addresses some of the issues.

I have it and the fader don’t work from day one, as a MPC Live 2 and sp404 mk 2 owner it is far less convoluted to create a beat with than the others to the extent I would even say the workflow is transparent, the punch in effects are a cool idea Roland and Akai could add such a feature via an update, I like that it’s only 64 mb as it made me focus more on choosing the right sounds as opposed to having gigs of library to choose from meaning you get shit done in a focused way, I can just run it through the SP 404 if I want a lofi effect or through koala sample, I’ve used the editor it’s cool although only online functionality? Maybe they could enable the usb socket to allow a usb hub to save samples onto a card🤔😎 Yeah I like it nice sequencer nice sound😎

You'll see me in the comments for a while until mine comes in, but the real secret sauce of this machine isn't it's specs...it's the sequencer. Hear me now and believe me later. No 4 or 8 bar limits to a pattern, new scenes stack onto the end so you can literally just create the song on the fly and it's also your song structure at the same time...and then you have 99 patterns per group? On a sub 500 dollar desktop groovebox and not a workstation? Seriously. People can shit on the sampler part, but that sequencer, for people who are okay without the top most of the line and cutting edge sound and just like pushing samples around, this sequencer is a godsend. Being trapped in 8 bar land, at least for me, in hardware grooveboxes for as long as I have, I'm surprised I didn't slit my wrist with a jagged Electribe 2 which shrank it's pattern length from 8 to 4 bars in the 'upgrade'. FFS. So just...that sequencer is gold for anyone who can make shit samplers sound good. Battery powered freedom to sequence off the grid and beyond the 8 bars.. every other damn manufacturer needs to be taking notes and ripping this off.

You've had the ep133 a whole day and it's your favorite? C'mon son EDIT: also, it wasn't a blatant decision to use rotary encoders, as opposed to endless. It was because during the chip shortage they purchased a surplus of components with the plan to fit them into an idea later. So these units were birthed from a bunch of deadstock components...that's also why they were able to bring it into the market at this price point

I wish i pulled the trigger before it sold out... I've had the OG OP-1 and it kinda looks like this is more of what i wish the Op-1 would be, sampling wise. The 404 MK2, i thought it would be my go to, but it has been collecting dust for months now. I was so happy it could basically do everything i hoped it could do, but now i realise there is a thing as 'too much'. This looks like a way more focused and streamlined device and workflow. and at 2/3 of the price of the MK2, it's hard not to give it a go. and to lo-fi it, lets just go back to sampling at 45 rpm or speed the audio up before sampling, until they add that feature :)

Hey folks. As an Ableton beat maker I gotta ask y'all a question, how do y'all use the beats you make for actual songs? For me it's essential for the mix that I have access to each track individually. So I can rearrange and reprocess it for different parts of the song. As for beats made on these samplers - how do y'all go to the next stage of mixing, adding vocals and creating different parts for the song? Thanks

I'm assuming just old school tracking like we used to do back in the day (solo each track and record it). I do that with the MC101. I track the drums out one by one. It's not as easy as just dragging and dropping stuff in or having a plugin but it's not hard to do either.

I was thinking, so you know how places like Best Buy or even Wal-Mart electronics department usually sell those External Card Readers for SD Cards, Sim Cards, etc. Well I wonder is there a small possibility if that may or may not work. Just a thought.🤔🤔

My 2 cents is lofi is an easy fx to recreate. Sometimes resampling something maybe pitched up and slowing it back down adds character. Rinse and repeat lol

About the fader gate : watching some unboxing and assembling videos , it looks that the fader's cap is very tight and people have to squeeze it hard to fit .
@wesp404
@wesp404 7 ай бұрын
There’s a video on it. Apparently when people push it down with force, it bends the connection pins so it loses contact after it’s depressed. Very bad QC, but not very suprising for TE. Nervous about my package coming, knowing a replacement if I have issues will most likely take a long time.

@@wesp404 I suggest try widening a bit the cap first , so you won't have to press the fader much .

To be fair you don’t have to press hardly at all so it’s a poor quality component on the fader.

@@wesp404 The cap for the fader is a very tight fit, unlike the other caps. I tried to see how much pressure it would take, and I didn't want to break mine, so I didn't even put it on. I have some vinyl slider caps laying somewhere. I'll probably just use one of those

This thing looks beautiful and like a lot of fun. There's a dealbreaker for me, though. I don't want to be reliant on the web app so I can transfer data from and to this device. I shouldn't need to have an internet connection for that at all. They should release an offline version of the web app.

So like what the hell do you do once you make a beat on it? If it's hooked up to MIDI in on an interface unless I have the exact same samples in my DAW, playing back the beat, sequencing it, err whatever the term is. I'd need to have the exact same samples in my DAW for it to sound the same. So a beat made with the built in drums and samples, how do you get it out of the machine in a usable format with the actual sounds and not just midi notes? Obviously, I don't know shit here, I'm used to making a beat on my MPC One, then when I hook it to the PC I can load it directly in the MPC software and edit it, play it back, whatever. I'm confused about how you use the beats you make with this. It looks super fun and is cheap. Could some MIDI fellow explain this to me? I'm sure it can be done, I just don't have an understanding to know how. And before I buy one I want to understand the post beat process.

I was giddy when I first saw it but the more and more I see reviews and other content creators do demos it’s really not impressive. If your a hobbyist best maker it has a great price point. But if you want beef the Mpc or Sp404 might be a better rough. Memory Expansion or Durability wise. Salute to Avee!
