In Texas in the 90s, it wasn't common to get sweet tea at restaurants. They would serve you iced tea, and they had a sugar shaker on the table to add as much sugar you wanted to your tea.

nice black tea with sugar for a hot cup. My MIL taught me to make iced tea without sugar. Of course, you have to have good water. It quenches a thirst better than water.

We have the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, so iced tea is icing on the cake for us in Texas - it's not necessary like it is in the UK, but it's a nice extra, just the same.

Who would’ve thought there are as many ways to make tea as there are to make potato salad? But I understand culture and circumstances are involved. First time I saw jugged tea at H‑E‑B, I thought how handy that would be to have for a gathering after a funeral. Couldn’t be as good as fresh brewed but folks can be awfully understanding after a graveside in July (or August…or most of September).

Wait, did you just make your own pot of tea but not brew your own sweet tea in Texas? Sugar, you ain't doing it right. Get you some large lipton icetea tea bags, 2 to 3 bags in a glass measuring cup, microwave it to boiling (then do the thing you ain't supposed to do, squeeze The remaining water out of the tea bags with your stirring spoon as you bring the bags out of the water) and while it's still hot, add in 2 to 4 cups of sugar (we normally only go up to three at most to be honest). Combine your simple syrup well, dilute into a large pitcher of water, pour over ice. Preferably in a mason jar, but that's not necessary. Just a good idea.

I don’t bring that water to a total boil, I steep it. Not as bitter! I like that I can control the amount of sugar that goes in it. Not overly sweet. 😉
