This is the most legendary video I’ve ever seen, I didn’t even realise how bassy the 58X’s were until you pointed them out, and this mod works so well that it honestly dumbfounds me. I also removed the outer foam covers and it seemed to widen the soundstage, they really sound beautiful now. Incredible video!

I did this and it does exactly what you describe - thank you! Previously I had to EQ to remove some of the veil and retrieve detail I thought was there but muffled, now I am happy and don't feel I need to continue buying headphones to get the right sound. And this mod is completely reversible.

Wasn't sure if the change in the sound signature would be significant enough to keep the mod, so I tried one side at a time and I've found the change worked and with the bass reduced the highs and mids were more in balance with the bass, so I can enjoy every part of a song more.

So I remember reading that the pre-production samples of the HD58x had a similar dampening filter as the HD600, but the bass to low mids were really weak. Removing it helped fix the shrill issue with that particular pre-prod driver setup. I would describe my stock HD58x as having full bass extension, muddy low mids, sufficient upper mids/presence. I've been using HeSuVi with the balanced EQ curve for these headphones and although it's not perfect, it flattens things out enough for my tastes. I'll definitely be trying the tea bag mod! Would help when I listen to music from my phone. Speaking of that, imo the sensitivity of the HD58x works really well for mobile devices! I think the marketing for them is spot-on for ideal use cases. Sturdy build quality and affordable price for pretty good sound quality with the 58x.

Just did your mod with matcha teabag and the result is incredible, the darkness of the 58X is gone! Thank you for the vid. Another further decrease you can achieve on this note is to remove the front foam and use some kind of veil fabric to still protect the driver. I'm still unsure about it being better than stock with your mod applied though, might be too much subtraction. Edit: just tried your mod with the stock inner foam back on and no, the combined mods are superb, better than stock. I'd say this brings the 58x even closer to the HD 600!

Really cool review. I got the current post 2021 OEM 600 series earpads, which have 1dB less output in low frequencies and the Solderdude mode might make 58X slightly lean. Also I replaced the front driver foam with ladies stockings, but the new pads make them brighter than I like. With current earpads the 6XX is slightly more neutral in the mids.

Great improvement, thanks. I have a late HD 580 (essentially the same as the h d600), which I love, but it needs the rather bulky ifi hip dac to get the right volume with my mobile. I've been using the HD58x with a simple usb-c dac but I could not live with the veiled sound. This has solved the problem. I used the thinnest teabag I could find so I'm left with a touch more bass than optimum but the veil is lifted.

I didn't catch this live so you may have answered this question. What I didn't hear in your review was that the HD 58X has an impedance of 150 ohm while the 600 is 300 ohms. Big difference if you don't have fancy equipment to drive them. Drue eludes to the fact that his Sennheiser's sound like, well, you know. I'm wondering if he is aware of that? Probably, just asking. Another good suggestion. Thanks.

I removed the inner foam, removed the spider cage and the foam covering the magnet from ny hd600. I then placed a pice of nylon to cover the inside of the ear pad. And cut a circle piece from a Red Rose tea bag ro cover magnet hole. Was amazed how much better soubd and overall bass improved. Sound is wide, full. But the bass has taken on a added depth of presence that i find very pleasing. For my ears i preffer this sound over tbe original sound of the hd 600.

I did my own version of this mod with a few extra steps... maybe overkill... but here goes... I used a piece of felt as my material (following Solderdude's recommendation). I also found a link to a 3d print file for a decorative piece that looks like the centre ring of the HD 660s. I sandwiched the piece of felt between 2 of the decorative pieces and then stuck the whole "sandwich" over the driver as you've done with the teabag material... the reason for mymethod was to create a small gap between the hole and the felt to avoid reducing the bass too much. the felt directly on the driver reduced the bass too much to my taste. I also did the "curtain mod" which involves replacing foam from the inside of the ear cups with sheer curtain fabric. This retains the bass response which is controlled by the outside of the driver (as you've shown) but also adds a little bit more sparkle to the treble (there's a curtain mod video here on youtube). I'd love to get my modded 58x measured at some point (I don't have the tech or smarts for that) but I love the balance of the tuning I've achieved

A good complement to doing this mod is to EQ in some sub bass. The 58x has the best bass extension out of all the 600 series, but it rolls off way too much. Fortunately it responds well to EQ, so if you do this mod + add in sub bass via EQ, you get more slam in the bass while gaining clarity in the mids.

Interesting video. Thanks man! Can't wait to try it out once my order arrives. Can you also do a video on the effects of removing the foam between the driver and the grills? I saw on Z's channel that this also has an effect on not just the bass, but also the treble.
@SuperReview
@SuperReview 3 жыл бұрын
There are two bits of foam that people often remove on this. (1) There's a foam panel behind the outer grill that's used as a dust cover. I did have it out at one point, but more for aesthetics than sound. solderdude, the guy that originally identified the magnet modification, measured the headphone with and without this foam and measured no difference, so I haven't really thought of it as a sound mod. (2) There's also some foam between the driver and the wearer's ear -- I think you get at it by removing the pads. Supposedly this raises the lower treble. I've seen this called "the curtain mod," and there are videos on KZbin. It didn't sound like it'd help with exposing the midrange, which is what I'm after, so I haven't tried this.

If you look at the capsule of HD600 (15:38) - in the region of 8-10 hours and 2-4 hours you can see plastic, black petals. Because of this, the mid-600s sounds haunting/screechy, coloring and at the same time hazy. On HD58X capsule (26:34) these petals have already been removed - so midrange is more pleasant and more correct.

A FR graph in isolation is pretty meaningless unless you have some reference that was also made on the same measurement system. I agree, I tried all the mods, foam, teabags, dryer sheets. Any mods you make to the effect the center hole ruins the perfect midrange sennheiser sound. Removing both foams and replacing the inside foam with something thin like leggings material really opens up the clarity separation and sound stage. It's the best it gets, which imo is pretty damn good. With mods I like them better than my sundaras, sundara just sounds too sharp and artificial in the tambour treble area. Sundara does everything else better but 58x w mods wins in midrange tambour and creaminess.

Allegedly, the foam is there to prevent dust from entering the exposed magnet. If you cover the magnet hole with tea bag or some other material, that function would no longer be needed, so you could remove it. But I'm just repeating hearsay.

@@SuperReview its a mod that was used mostly on Beyers for lowering some spikes. On HD58X that i mostly keep.them for mods the coffe filter between the driver and the foam makes the headphone darker. Another mod is the silk fabric behind the driver it reflects air waves better that tea bag and make bass linear. Something that helps dynamics is the magnet find a magnet same dimensions and have that over ... Its already be done and discussed on UK tunners the ones that are moding hd25 headphones.... But find a magnet with hole is hard... So what make the bass tighter is a mod that i use take a felizol or dynamat cut the same shape like the. Driver magnet with the same hole diameter then stick it like u did , that will.make the hole behind the driver longer and this will make the bass tight and progressive not flappy. Is there a reason you don't EQ? Mods like these have always struck me as trying to accomplish the same thing as EQ but with way less control, but maybe that's just me being ignorant.
@SuperReview
@SuperReview 3 жыл бұрын
If I was always listening to one headphone on one source, I'd probably have fewer reasons to not EQ. But moving between multiple headphones and sources, EQ gets challenging. Might forget you have EQ on and start listening to a different headphone. Might move to a source that doesn't have EQ, or doesn't have EQ with the same level of control (or different interpretations of EQ values).

NOTE : I didn't try the mod yet. I have the HD58X for 3 years now (Massdrop just released it and it was $149) and I hated it since day one. Mark's description of the sound is spot on : "Cloudy and meh...". To that, I would add "Upper bass/lower mid congested and a generally uncrisp audio experience". When my brother just bought himself a brand new HD600, he came home for a comparison with my few headphones : (in order of preference) beyerdynamic DT990 Pro AKG K7XX HiFiman HE400i Fostex T50RP mk2 (with mods) Sennheiser HD58X Jubilee I first put the HD58X... and then HD600. Wow, I wasn't expecting so much difference, but for me it was huge. Then I compared with all my other headphones, and I understood why the HD600 is so praised. It was my favorite of the bunch, followed closely by my good old DT990. For my brother it was a tie between HD600 and DT990. For those who wonder, yes the HD600 is much better than the HD58X.
