This DOES WORK!!! Thank you!! My Yorkie and Beagle love to hike with me. The downside is that BOTH are EXPERT hunters and often find and enthusiastically and triumphantly 'claim' dead critters- from skulls picked clean💀 to the ultimate prize of recent corpses 🤮.... offering non perishable treats on trade is a VERY hard sell indeed! Aside from carrying liver bits in a cooler, any suggestions on an equitable trade item for these occasions? 🙂

But for smart dogs, they'll just start taking things they know they shouldn't have just to get a treat. I've seen it happen so I'm not sure about this approach. Input?

I have a little bit of a problem with this cue! My dog is super smart, and he is also ridiculously obsessed with food since he was a stray, and we adopted him very malnourished. I can't teach him drop it because as soon as he understands treats (even super low value) are nearby, he won't grab anything else and won't continue playing. Is there a way to teach him "drop it" with food only? For instance, drop a low value kibble for higher value piece of a chewy treat?

Yes, you can teach it with food only by using different values as you say. Or you can also be veeeeery sneaky about the food when using a toy. Put it into your back pocket and only bring it out when you know your dog has all but forgotten about it. I actually just had a lesson on this with a client this morning - we tend to be too impatient in bringing out the food. Only when the dog is 100% committed to the toy, bring it out. You can even just put the treats in your pocket, then go about your day and try this 30min later when your dog doesn't remember anymore about the treat :)

My dog will not play with a ball, in fact she does not know how to play at all. How can I teach her how to play with a ball, she is an ex street dog?

Hi There, Some dogs are not as toy motivated as others by nature, however we do have a Learn to Fetch course here: spiritdogtraining.com/learn-to-fetch-course/
