I'm so amazed to see the other dogs just sitting nonchalantly on the couch - not concerned one bit. If I got on the floor & used my "excited" voice, both dogs would be jumping all over me! You do great work Emily! Love it when I have a new video of yours in my inbox!

Great job on the editing and putting the vid together kikopup. All the link is very seamless and classy I know it takes extra effort but it really made a big difference. I'm very impressed. You know Emily, one beautiful thing about your vids is they don't just apply to dogs. I c/t with my horse, and everything you show is applicable w/him also. I have been speaking with many dog owners lately, and intro-ing c/t to them. My first suggestion is always your youtube site. You are def at the top of the game:)

@TioMoka You mean the "prize"? The reward was actually kibble- a whole one for the big dogs and small pieces for the little dogs. but my dogs love all food. A great treat for dogs that are not as motivated is real meat and real cheese. (small amounts of cheese as it is unhealthy)

You can also teach the dog to put the object in something, then put your hand where the object was. I found this worked with my dog, who had trouble targeting my hand. The box being on the ground meant he didn't find it being there as an incentive to drop the object he was holding. It results in the same behaviour of dropping the object in your hand.

Thanks so much for this video! I've watched a few other videos on teaching this and never gotten far-- I taught my dog drop-it before, so she immediately thought that's what I wanted (even though I wasn't clicking or rewarding for that). Your technique of tugging and backing up finally got through to her that I want her to keep the object in her mouth. We'll keep working on this and hopefully before long she'll be putting away her toys!

@TheSpazzofMuffins It depends if you put the behavior on stimulus control- like service dog behaviors. But the object in the video was a plastic toy shoe, that splash hates picking up so I thought I would use it to teach her fetching anything is fun! I did not add the bit to this video about how to teach them not to mouth the objects on the way back, because I thought it would be too long but I will make a tutorial on that soon!

I really love the personality in your videos :) Some trainers have made claims that over-reliance on clickers in some trainers take away the human-dog interaction, and have become too mechanical and scientific, which is I think is an unsubstantiated statement. Just because a trainer relies heavily on clickers doesn't mean his/her relationship with the dog suffers in any way. Well done :)

Great tutorial. My dog Koby is great at taking, carrying, and places items inside objects. He will also perform tricks while holding something in his mouth. However, I am having trouble getting him to sit still and hold an object without chomping on it and it falling out of his mouth. Any ideas how to get him to hold it quietly with out the movement of his mouth. I have tried marking and rewarding for ever tiny moment that he holds it with out chomping and it has gotten better but still not great. I would love to be able to take pictures of him holding an object but he is so wiggly with his head and mouth when sitting still. But, he does not chomp at it when he is moving though.

for a puppy that sometimes eats/swallows things that aren’t her food, do you think this would make that better or worse? 🤔 I am not sure if encouraging her to put random things in her mouth will teach her not to just swallow things, or if it would increase her desire to try and eat it

Your other dogs are so well behaved even when the clicker is going off. I am currently using clicker training with my puppy, but in group training sessions when other people's clickers are going off she gets distracted, or looks at me for a treat. What should I do in these situations?

My dog is reliably taking the object but I’m stuck building up duration. She knows she will get a treat (were even using low value treats like her kibble) so she just takes it into her mouth and then drops it. Oh yes, please do! I'm a very novice clicker trainer who made the mistake of teaching my border collie to fetch my shoes, and now he won't STOP fetching them. When I sit down for more than five minutes, I end up with half a dozen shoes scattered at my feet. At what point/how do you add the cue word? I am in a wheelchair, and I want to train my dog to grab something off the floor if I can't reach it.
@gooconz8 жыл бұрын
When the dog knows what to do, say the cue as the dog is doing it, right before or at the same time as you click. When you've done that several times, you can progress to saying the cue word before the dog does the desired behavior. Practice in different environments and with yourself in different positions. The first cues are the hardest, after that the dog should start to get the general idea.

My dog, an Akita, 7 months old, loves to play ball, she will fetch and bring the ball back but then will not release it. She wants to do tug of war, but I will not play that game. How do I get her to release the ball when she comes back?
@K9JusticeTrue10 жыл бұрын
Why won't you play that game? It's a great reward, too! But maybe with a tug like toy. A great way for releasing a ball is to have another ball. Play with it and wait for a drop, click or mark, then throw the other one. Then move to hiding the second ball behind you, in pocket, and wait for drop, mark, throw.
@muskan-gf4cl10 жыл бұрын
U can hit him LIGHTLY on the nose and say in a strict tone leave. If he doesn't den u can get his favourite treat and he has to leave it. As soon as he leaves it give him d treat and praise him. Dis should work.
@K9JusticeTrue10 жыл бұрын
No you don't have to do that, and that's not good training. No reason whatsoEVER to hit a dog, even lightly. Please just watch more kikopup's videos for the real training. You can teach to let go of a tug or ball, by using 2 in the game. It's not hard at all.
