Splash my own dog was one of the hardest reactive dogs to train and now she is reliably friendly and safe around dogs and people. The thing is with this method of training, the dog looks "trained". I am uninterested in trying to impress people with "the difference" because showing a dog reacting, causes the dog to be more reactive in the future than NEVER showing the dog react. All animals can regress to a previous behavior, they have practiced. So having an animal react one more time to...

I was excited to learn this technique which my dog NEEDS! But Ii felt frstrated because there is no way (despite great patience on both our parts) my dog would be that calm. I feel it would be so much more helpful to show how you teach this to a regularly active dog! He is well trained & can do "chin" but no long. I don't have many, many training sessions to muzzle my nippy Aussie around grandbabies. :-(

Nothing short of amazing! You have such great insight into the canine mind, and how to access it from the human mind. If every prospective dog owner were introduced to your videos, and trained accordingly, there would no longer be "incorrigible" dogs getting turned in to shelters. We have rehabbed 4 shelter dogs in the last 2 years--1 is now a well-behaved pet, 1 a Search & Rescue dog, and 2 are service dogs--all based on positive reinforcement. Thank you so much! Keep the videos coming!

I cannot put that info into a youtube video, each step of the process and management has to be outlined carefully so no one screws up. Most of the dogs in my videos that are not my own dogs are dogs who were previously reactive or aggressive, some have bitten people in the past (because those are the most clients I get). cont...

Thank you Donna, I see 4 dogs a day for training and behaviour. Super getting the owners to do this if I get young puppies, but so difficult when dogs have been let off without a proper recall for months. I know it would work brilliantly, getting owners to do it is far harder. thank you, I am going to work it with a clients rescue GSD tomorrow.

I think you need to change your approach - don’t think of it as ‘aggressiveness’ (be it humans, dogs, what ever), but ‘anxiety’ or ‘nervousness’. Few dogs are ‘aggressive’ - it’s not in their interests to be aggressive. Far better to move away or to appease the other. Sadly, some dogs don’t know how, or cannot (eg, when on a lead). The answer, really, is to manage the problem - try to avoid the thing the dog is distressed by. If that’s not possible, demonstrate that you are there to protect the dog - walk smartly away; get yourself between the dog and ‘it’; even pick the dog up (if that’s feasible). It’s a really long trail (and often unsuccessful) trying to teach your dog not to fear. Management and showing your dog that you’re there to protect him/her are the answers - in my opinion.

I understand the problem is with the people walking the dog and not the dog himself. Also the only reason we started using a gentle leader in the first place is because with a regular leash and collar our dog started pulling and 'standing' on hind legs to greet people walking by. He still enjoys walks but I don't want problems to progress. I want a calm happy dog that isn't stressed by others on walks and doesn't pull. Thank you for your help in advance!

I need so much help muzzle training 😭 I have a very sick puppy with severe food and environmental allergies, and GI issues... She is on Prescription diet for both GI and Allergies and vet said we cannot deviate from the diet at all. Vet has instructed because her condition is severe she MUST be muzzled whenever we take her outside. We have been in the ER 4xs in the last month for her severe allergic reactions. She hates the prescription treats and won't go for them...she needs to be muzzled for her safety and health, but there is nothing in it for her so she doesn't want to do it. Is there anyway to successfully muzzle train without treats? I am so lost. I want my puppy to be healthy 😓 we were just in the ER again yesterday because her face swelled up from eating a bug... she ate a bug so quickly we couldnt stop her even though we were right there and she was leashed. Getting her muzzle trained is essential to her being able to live, and the vet just said I'll be fine keep trying
@kikopup
@kikopup 2 жыл бұрын
Oh no I am so sorry. Try different muzzles, ask the vet if you can use something like an elizabethan cone thats long enough that she cant reach the ground with it. Its also a great idea to focus on training her to do a default leave it from anything on the ground so she doesnt think to eat things in the future when shes an adult. Sorry you are having such a hard time.
@jessicageorge4155
@jessicageorge4155 2 жыл бұрын
@@kikopup thank you so much for the suggestion. It would be a good practice to train her not to eat anything off the ground, also working on the "leave it" command, but they are so difficult to reward and reinforce without treats... And as a sighthound she is having super difficulty not hunting whatever moves... 😅 the training sometimes flies right out the window. Today we had good success, she didn't sniff the ground to find a "spot" and was able to keep her muzzle on but unfortunately still got covered in hives which disappeared an hour after Benadryl.

Please could you tell me if it really matters at what point the food is presented? I see you do a mix of classical conditioning when you feed *at the same time* as the muzzle is on and you also do some operant stuff - saying yes after the behaviour of being still as the strap is put on and feeding after. Could you clicker train the dog to push his/her head in - mark the behaviour and duration of that and then feed away from the muzzle so he/she has to go back to push his/her muzzle in again?

Please got. But also then take it in recent Merchant in cold water and it will stay in that position being coming a personalized fitted muzzle it took me about two days to get one from Amazon and I was under twenty bucks I did try to get one from all the local stores but they didn't have my size in stock there are sold out often and getting an online just worked out great:-) cheers and good luck

However, due to our current work/living situation (to guarantee our akita/border collie is always walked twice a day) two other family members walk him. After they walk him he starts pulling with the gentle leader until I walk him again. The family members understand why and how to use the leader but somehow are encouraging pulling when I am not there. How can I fix this problem?

Can you do a video showing how to have the dog not try to remove the muzzle once conditioned to put it on? My dog is good with it until we start moving around.
@kikopup
@kikopup 5 жыл бұрын
Good idea! I should have put that in the video. I suggest that when you start the movement, you go somewhere that is not inside your house. Its like when you wear an uncomfortable item of clothing in your house, you are hyper focused on it, but if you leave the house, because of the other stimuli in the environment it becomes easier to ignore the feeling of the clothing. The same works for dogs and equipment such as a muzzle or harness. I suggest having short sessions where the dog sniffs outside with the muzzle on then take it off. If the dog goes to paw at it, you can say "leave it" and lure his head up with a treat. The muzzle will also move a little when the dog goes to sniff, so it will be natural for a dog to think it feels different. Dogs with thicker on their muzzle have it easy, but dogs with sensitive skin and thin hair they obviously feel it a lot.... You can try modifying the muzzle to make it more comfortable. Michael Shikashio has a lot of ideas on making muzzles more comfortable.

Good afternoon, I am the founder of Muzzled Misfits, a muzzle advocacy page. Our goal is to shine a positive light on muzzles, the dogs who wear them and owners who choose to use them regardless of why. We currently share positive stories, success stories, and educational information regarding muzzles. Eventually we hope to have meet ups for muzzled dogs and their owners in the farm of structured walks and supervised socials (for those who are safe to do so), as well as help educate Veterinary and shelter/Rescue staff on proper muzzle sizing, training and uses. We are trying to get more input from Pet Professionals such as Dog Trainers, Veterinary Staff, and so forth. I know you are very busy, but I would absolutely love if you could share your thoughts on muzzles, muzzle training and any other information to be featured on our page! Thank you so much!

I'm not here to trick anyone. If something didn't work I wouldn't show it. The motivation of my work is to help people and their dogs not any sneaky self satisfying motive tricking people to do something that doesn't work. The reason I like to use dogs who are already trained is I can show the progression step by step till the finished result while talking at the same time to the viewer. Talking and training at the same time can be stressful to a dog who is completely untrained. Also it is so much faster to edit a video demo with a dog who is a demo dog than to edit a video of the 12 training sessions of 5 mins to show the exact steps. This cone video shows training a dog to wear a cone that has not worn one, its the same process kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKPWq5ypm9OJbMU I suggest playing all sorts of games, including "put it in" this is a game that the video also shows a puppy learning kzbin.info/www/bejne/fmLOpnWgfdqBY9k

1.) Baskervilles aren't bite proof, a dog needs a wire basket muzzle or Jafaco plastic muzzle if it is a bite risk and some dogs ARE bite risks 2.) Baskervilles rarely fit a dog properly. A better, still non-biteproof, muzzle would be biothane (these can be bought custom made) 3.) Dogs NEED pant room. If a dog cannot full pant in a muzzle then it is not the correct size of muzzle, regardless of bite risk or not. Any muzzle that restricts FULL pant including muzzles that hold a dogs mouth closed are not acceptable and can KILL a dog. 4.) That muzzle is NOT the correct measurement for your dog. Your dog should be able to hold a ball in its mouth in the Muzzle if you can't measure full pant. If you can measure full pant then do that instead. If you can't do either, adding 4-5 inches to closed hight is usually sufficient. For help finding the correct muzzle type and measurements you need, I recommend going to "muzzle up pup - the pro muzzle community" on facebook For help with training the dog to wear the muzzle and additional help with type and sizing of muzzles, I recommend going to "Muzzle tips & training" on facebook

@@cbcdesign001 the websites for a majority of muzzles, especially Baskervilles, do not provide adequate pant room in their measurements nor do they explain explicitly that they are or are not bite proof. The groups I mentioned are simply places to look for guidance as the admin and mod team are experienced handlers who do know what they are doing. If you don't like that then you don't need to comment, just scroll by. It's not my fault that YOU don't understand dog anatomy and the PROVEN FACT that restricting a dogs pant can cause it to quickly overheat and be deadly, thus adequate pant room in a muzzle is essential. You're ignorance isn't a good enough excuse to push people away from valuable help that could save their dogs lives.

+Pedro Reis I disagree with you, wearing a muzzle should be teached to every dog, as every dog can bite in a stressful situation, and those are the situations you don't want the muzzle to be adding stress - so you should teach to wear a muzzle before - that means teaching the dogs that "don't need a muzzle" to wear it.
