discussion of exploitative language learning platforms, including allegations of extremely low pay, mismanagement, etc. what responsibility do we have as language learners to ensure that the platforms where we are spending money are behaving in an ethical manner?

wow, thank you so much for addressing all of this! ive been in the market for a new instructor/platform and i feel way more informed now before making that choice. the companies that literally just play the middle man but literally think they deserve that much of commission esp when the wages are already lowered. and force FREE classes onto the tutors… what the actual fuck. (im looking at you, preply)

Such an excellent discussion of an incredibly important topic! As someone who hasn't used these services but likely will at some point, this is great information to keep in mind when looking for a language teacher. It somehow still amazes me how people can be so willfully obtuse about exploitation of workers everywhere, but especially in the global south.

I agree with the point on unlimited classes, like realistically I’d probably tap out at 12+ classes per month. I’d rather have less classes but with an engaged motivated teacher and not feel gross about myself

@@DanHan91 agreed! I think most people are viewing these types of services more as conversation partners than “classes,” so they want every day or close to it, but we can always try to find free conversation exchanges, or group classes, etc. where it’s more sustainable
