It was only me, a Black girl and 1 Asian guy in our class. We used to get so mad because our teacher would show... almost passive distaste towards minorities. He would hide it behind “facts”, so it would be hard to complain to anyone.

Hey, I'm from the school where the Teacher was being racist. As of today, there has been no follow-up about this situation from the school district, and from what I understand this teacher was teaching history about how people used to be racist to Asian people and choose to pull her eyes back to demonstrate how people acted back then. There may be more, but this is pretty much all from what I could tell. As a Hmong American, I was really shocked by this and was really worried about this teacher. I listened to other students at my school with varying opinions. A lot of students were driven by emotions, they got mad, upset, sad, and felt betrayed. I heard many students say that she should be fired. I don't agree with that because I don't think this teacher is inherently racist. She made a mistake A RACIST MISTAKE and she should be suspended and should be able to learn from that experience. I think that if she doesn't get a chance to learn from her mistakes, then how will she learn and grow as a person? There is a great petition that addresses a lot more things that I agree with about this teacher! (at the end of this comment) .ALSO, she doesn't deserve death threats! nobody does! SHAME on those people for sending death threats! Other people tried to defend her by saying that "it was taken out of context" or "This teacher is the best, she would never do that". First of all, CONTEXT MATTERS but that doesn't change the fact that she was being racist to my kind. Her intention may be good, but she did a horrible job trying to teach. Then some students were extremely biased to the fact that this teacher was their favorite and that this teacher is the only one that cared for the students. And to that I say, BIASED people are the worst. So what if she's YOUR favorite teacher? does that excuse her actions? No, it doesn't. If ya guys want to help out, The Sacramento Asian/ Pacific Islander (API) Regional Network has created a petition for this! chng.it/xkMg5RsQ7b
@ajtam053 жыл бұрын
There is no amount of context that makes what she did A) reasonable or B) a viable choice through which to teach racism. Lol...literally zero...and that's if you logically break down any given scenario as to why she would "opt" to do it.
@shad0wCh8ser3 жыл бұрын
“Context matter” doesn’t make it okay for her to show up in black face and shackles to teach about slavery. I vote for her punishment to be her having to dress in “yellow face” for 3-5 month... esp with covid, to be able to have the real “Asian experience” aka getting harassed for no reason just bc ppl see that you are Asian so that she may learn from her mistake. Call it her sensitivity training... I can’t think of an equivalent action to make fun of her race to show how insensitive she is being. Maybe crumple up bag to saltine crackers and throw it at her? Jk. All jokes aside, if you are a teacher then you should have enough sense to not make actions that would alienate anyone of your students. If she can’t see what she did was wrong then she shouldn’t be teaching bc at the very least she showed poor judgement. Poor judgment and teaching = teaching poor judgement. If anyone argues that pulling the eyelid back to represent Asians is alright, then you can come back with: how would you like it if I only talk to you with bugged eye (a shocked look) and said I’m showing you what non-Asian ppl look like to me. I’m sure they would feel insulted and maybe they’d get a little insight as to how that makes Asian ppl feel when they have to see ppl pull on their eyes to represent Asians.

I'm black/Korean but I've had so many people assume I was Pacific Islander/Hawaiian. Maybe two or three people in my entire life actually guessed my ethnicity correctly or at least recognized my name is Korean. Other than that, I've only had a few people imply my Korean half was invalid/nonexistent because I'm also half black. The only time that happened was way after I stopped caring about those types of people so it didn't really affect me.

That's funny, my friend (black/korean) and I would always laugh at how all the other races thought he is one of their own. When we're out, random people would speak to him in their language, thinking he was Filipino, Khmer, Samoan, South American. Then at Korean church people thought he was just black. And once he got put in a cop car because the police got a description of two robbers- one black and one Asian. He was seen as the Asian.

I’m from the school this teacher is from, and I just wanted to say. It was like a setup, the class was talking about Asian racism today, and then someone asked about how it was back then in the 80s. Why would someone be recording a zoom class for no reason? Setup to ruin a career. She was explaining how people would recognize different Asian races. I personally know this teacher and she’s the most loving and caring teacher at the school (GUHS). She ran Asian clubs like Lao and Kpop club, it wouldn’t makes sense for her to do those gestures with malicious intent. I hate that there was no context in the videos posted and it just made her look bad and she got bashed on. She literally loved and cared for everyone in her class equally. I just hate how these childish Kids had to bring it to social media, especially when social media is sensitive rn. I’m not justifying what she did, she could’ve described it with words but man. Sucks seeing her get bashed on for a video that has no context to as of what’s happening or what was being discussed in the classroom.

Semi unpopular opinion: As a black man I honestly don’t care if any minorities say “nigga” casually and sometimes even close white friends but here’s the rub. If you feel like you have to ask permission to say it in front of my or you even feel like it’s “cool” to say it when black people aren’t around then you’re probably one of the people that didn’t actually grow up using it normally. You just want to say it to fit in a place that you don’t belong. I’ve literally had white people I know being like “can I say it” and I’m like “first I know you’re fake as fuck because had you just said it and kept going I would’ve noticed but I wouldn’t have really cared as much. Now I know you’re just asking because you probably say it all the time when you can get away with it online knowing that you wouldn’t actually do it in person.” I just hate fake courtesy. If that’s how you talk then talk.

I will say this, I had an Asian boss he was from Korea, he often a racist jokes and not about Asians. He once compared me to a picture of a gorilla. That hurt beyond belief. So my point is as someone who is black, it is very hard to have sympathy for the situation. What that lady did was WRONG! But I have experienced racism from Asians so is anybody really supposed to care? Sometimes the Asian community ain’t right and when something happens to you all you suddenly at like it is a entirely big deal when you’ve been doing it for years to other races. I personally have faced racism at least once a month living in the present day. And it’s not always a white person sometimes its an Asian. So why don’t you all think about that before you make videos about how you feel about being picked on. Because you guys aren’t always innocent.
