Sandipan Chanda is a teacher at the WestBridge Anand Chess Academy (WACA) and D. Gukesh is a student at the WACA. They share a wonderful bond with each other off the board. However, at the Qatar Masters Open 2023, they were pitted against each other in round 3. Sandipan, who once upon a time, was one of the best players of the country with an Elo of 2650+, has now come down to an Elo of 2496. Gukesh on the other hand is the rising star not just in India but the world and boasts of an Elo of 2758. It was going to be an exciting battle between the two. At the end after Gukesh gives Qf3 check Sandeepan can do Kg1 and then after Gukesh gives another check by taking the pawn on g3 what is Sandeepan blocks this check with his rook. Looks like after this Gukesh does not have any moves to mate Sandeepan. There is a situation to draw but if not Gukesh will have to be on the defensive to save his rook. Am I missing anything here. Thanks.

Yes, there is no mate but saving the rook is an easy task (literally takes 1 move) and it does not mean Gukesh is on the defensive. Gukesh has a very safe king with very active pieces hunting down the white king. He is already 2 pawns up and probably going to be even more. Completely busted position.
