Hi Mr Salles. I've found your Romeo and Juliet guide and your videos very helpful as I have gotten little support in school. I've recently done an essay on Lord Capulet. My teacher marked me down for not mentioning how he is a good father and respectable citizen when he tells Tybalt to not make a scene at the Capulet ball. Would I need to include how Capulet is a good father in order to get a Level 6? Thank you

Hello Mr Salles, this video was very helpful, thank you! You saved my grades when I was doing my GCSE English Literature exams with your predictions! I was able to focus solely on certain topics and disregard others, which helped a lot! I was wondering, do you know why there’s no sort of predictions for the A-level papers? I’ve been searching all around, in need of the type of help I got from you during my GCSES but there are none. There’s barely any predictions/ advice for edexcel a level eng literature and my teachers don’t offer much help, either. Do you know the reasoning behind this? Is it just in general harder to look for patterns? Do you have any websites/ channels in mind which cover A level edexcel eng lit? Thank you so much!

Hey Mr Salles, I used the website because I was wondering about purchasing it and sharing it with your referal code however I recieved 2 vastly different judgements. My teachers decided that I had a level 3 answer scoring 15 marks whereas the website said I was level 5. I feel unsure about this website and was wondering if you could verify which of the two is more accurate so I know whether to purchase it or not.

@@MrSallesTeachesEnglish Feedback is at the bottom labelled as 1,2,3 so it may be easier to read this way (I personally think i deserve a level 5 only, and also your website in 'about' is not quite working im afraid) 1 As a socialist, Priestley uses the Inspector as a mouthpiece to point out the variety of problems led by the power imbalance and injustice in the postwar society. The Birling family is an example of the capitalist upper class, especially Mr Birling, who believes strongly in the ideology of patriarchalism and the importance of individualism. Their exploitative behaviour, whether intent or reckless, further shapes a harsh hierarchical structure in society which is based on their family background and social status. Their prestige and prosperity may satisfy their wants and needs, but their ignorant behaviours are the roots of all the corruptions and hostility in the society. Thus, Priestley tries to convey the idea of equality and social responsibility, trying to breach the rift between upper and lower class closer, and so to disprove the concept of capitalism. 2 The Inspector, as a proxy for Priestley, symbolises socialism and enlightened the potential that the younger generation could possibly step up and change, through “We often do on the young ones. They are more impressionable.” The way Priestley points out at the pronoun “we” suggests that socialism could possibly be a ‘prominent leader’ amongst all people, which indicates that socialism is the only way the society works. The lower class will not have to climb their way up, instead everyone has an equal opportunity and gains their fundamental human rights. Priestley also focuses on the younger generation, meaning that they are the group of people who are more open-minded and susceptible to take up socialist ideas. Here also suggesting that capitalism is already "old-fashioned", only the eldest would stay in their rigid and locked mind. And ironically, Mr and Mrs Birling, on behalf of the whole working demographic, is in fact the most experienced and sophisticated group of people, yet they seem to be incapable of being the leader for the majority of the generation. Simultaneously, Sheila and Eric, who seemed to appear immature and sheltered, realise their wrongdoings. They challenged and rejected their capitalist parents, instead helped to express that only socialism can pave our future as to enhance people’s minds. In Act 2, Sheila shows her dedicated petition for her change through “He’s giving us the rope - so we’ll hang ourselves.” The idea of a rope is perhaps indicating a tool which would help people to escape from struggling situations, showing that the Inspector is giving them opportunities. In spite of that, neither do the capitalist members grasp and comprehend his words, yet proceed to be resistant to change their beliefs. Consequently, it is referring to a way where they will eventually “hang themselves”, resulting in death equivalent to Eva Smith’s suicide. This also implies that the lower class do not deserve to die out of the lack of help, and that the upper class's unconscious actions can be implicitly and gradually killing the innocent ones. Priestley again brings out the importance of social responsibility, and attempts to shape a heroic side of socialism, suggesting that welfare of the poor is everyone's responsibility, and that businessmen shouldn't grow rich on the poverty of their workers. 3 In addition, at any time capitalism is mentioned, these ideas would be stopped by the interruption of the Inspector or even the stage directions, like 'the sharp doorbell'. These are significant because the Inspector is always shown to be powerful and is constantly knocking over to the concept of capitalism. Priestley uses the character of the authoritative Inspector to imply a distinctive aura around socialism, indicating that the capitalists show no sympathy and willingness to bother. Priestley uses these brutal acts to persuade his audience that capitalist belief is misleading. In a broader perspective, he directly addresses to the upper class as a whole that they shouldn't control the poor by using manipulative means under their prejudiced mind, they shouldn't profit from someone else's misfortune, as no one is deserved to be maltreated. The Inspector again reminds us of the importance of socialism at the end of the play: “We are all members of one body. We are responsible for one another." Priestley's final speech serves socialism as a lens through which he critiques the prevailing social hierarchies, and underscores the interconnectedness of individuals in the society. In a broader perspective, Priestley attempts to educate the upper class in the Edwardian era through this didactic play, that it is not merely about advocating for economic equality, regardless their social status, collective responsibility and compassion towards each other is what shapes an equitable society. Feedbacks 1 (This paragraph effectively sets the context for Priestley's use of the Inspector to critique societal issues. However, try to directly link these observations to how the Inspector suggests improvements to society.) 2 (Excellent analysis of the Inspector's influence on the younger generation and the critique of capitalism. Your use of textual evidence to support your points is strong. Consider exploring further how these ideas directly suggest improvements to society beyond the critique.) 3 (This paragraph effectively highlights how Priestley uses the Inspector to disrupt capitalist ideology and promote socialism. The analysis of stage directions and the Inspector's final speech is insightful. To strengthen your argument, consider discussing how these disruptions and reminders serve as direct suggestions for societal improvement.) Level: 6 Overall feedback: Your essay demonstrates a thoughtful and detailed understanding of how Priestley uses the character of the Inspector to critique societal issues and suggest improvements through socialism. You've effectively used textual evidence to support your analysis and have shown a clear grasp of the play's themes. To further enhance your response, focus on directly linking your observations to specific suggestions for societal improvement made by the Inspector, and consider exploring the implications of these suggestions in more depth. What went well: Your understanding of the play's themes and your ability to support your analysis with textual evidence are strong. You've effectively identified how Priestley uses the Inspector as a vehicle for his critique of capitalism and promotion of socialism. Even better if: To improve, ensure that your analysis directly ties back to the question by explicitly stating how the Inspector suggests ways that society could be improved. Additionally, delve deeper into the implications of these suggestions for societal improvement, considering the broader context of the play's themes.
