How about for non-native speakers but having a good score in IELTS and having a TEFL certificate with bachelor’s degree? Is it tough getting a teaching job in Vietnam?

Hey mate, is there much demand in some of the more regional cities such as Hue? When we visited earlier this year, we really liked Hue.

There are job opportunities in smaller cities around Vietnam but it will just depend on what's available at any given time. The majority of opportunities are in HCMC, Hanoi and their surrounding provinces.

What's the status with the new law. Is more going to be required?
@ninja.teacher
@ninja.teacher 8 ай бұрын
No, in December there was a circular released that outlined a new program that is accepted by the government but is an alternative to a foreign issued TEFL, not needed in addition to one. According to the head of the Teacher and Education Management Officials Department under the Ministry of Education and Training, the ministry's program targets individuals with English language proficiency but lacking suitable pedagogical skills. He’s quoted as saying 'Therefore, foreigners who meet the language proficiency requirements and have recognized English teaching certificates are not obliged to participate’

How does the white skin fare against the hot weather of Vietnam the whole year round? Context: I'm from the UK so sun isn't around most of the year
@killbotone6210
@killbotone6210 10 ай бұрын
It gets dark at 5pm all year round so if you're teach 9-5, you won't see much sun. It is intense heat thought, 15 mins without covering up and you will burn. Speaking as an Irishman, you should be fine, just use your head.
@ninja.teacher

Plenty UK folks surviving the sun out here. :) When you're living here you typically can avoid the worst of the sun just by being indoors during the midday heat or covering up when you do go out.

Lolz what you talk about like White skin is some kind special. This is VIETNAM - tropical country, not somewhere in Middle East - desert lands or Africa - not desert but burning hot. Tropical is hit, sunny all year long but it not like desert places!! Btw, alots VIETNAM have lighter skin more than White people Vietnam have wide range of skin, porcelain skin to light white skin to white skin yellow undertone, medium skin to slighty brown skin to medium brown skin.

I have recently been informed that it is becoming much harder for teachers to find work in Vietnam as the Government has introduced new (stricter) rules last December. Can you confirm this? I don't have a teaching license but I am a native speaker from England, UK with a degree in English Language and Linguistics, an online TEFL, experience in China, and currently two years experience as an EAL Co-ordinator in a British secondary school. Would it be possible for me without QTS? Many thanks.

Biggest factors: can you learn to drive a bike (if not you'll be taking and spending a lot on taxis), can you handle 20 excitable and boisterous kids in a class, can you tolerate illogical and archaic bureaucracy, do you like hot weather (if not, go to korea or japan), are you okay with a gamified approach to teaching? If not, you may struggle, do you need to be able to walk or hike around the city? (saigon isnt walkable barring d2 and d7 and maybe d1), can you handle attention from strangers? (you will get stared at if you arent asian), can you handle noise pollution? (in vietnam its okay to beep your horn and shout in doors - not to mention street noise of sellers with speaker phones and drunk men singing kaeroke). A lot of us learn to love half of it and tolerate the rest but its really not for everyone and I notice most people leave within a year of arrival.

You can avoid most of the above problems if you choose to teach in smaller cities. And of course your salary is smaller. They pay you a good salary compared to local teachers and as a developing country's salary scale. Your monthly salary is considered above middle class Vietnamese. You are a sort of selfish individual when you mentioned only the negative sides? Teaching in Korea! Do you even know how much does it cost for a weekend fight to the island compared to Vietnam a fight to the sea, let alone hotel cost and food price in Korea.
@leigh7507
@leigh7507 10 ай бұрын
@thumtlnguyen3626 the video is about if Vietnam is for them so we need to be honest about everything they will face. Ive seen teachers invest most of their savings to come here, they hate it, and then go home within a year without barely saving enough to cover the 4k cost to move here and the 2k cost to move back. The ones who leave before a year actual run at a financial negative. Only the international schools cover flight costs so teachers need to know this and plan if Vietnam is suitable as we don't want people making a huge mistake.

@@leigh7507Your argument sounds like Vietnam owed teachers something or Vietnam must have been responsible for their financial burn out. Vietnam did not invite them for God's sake. Teaching is a business deal between them and their employers. They are supposed to do their homework before closing the deal.
@leigh7507

hence me giving them advice to be careful before they come. People make out they can get rich in Vietnam when in reality they really wont (as an english teacher). The only people in vietnam getting rich are corrupt officials and swindling land owners (just stand outside of the fancy schools and look who drive the expensive 4x4s and SUVs).@@thumtlnguyen3626

Just a question: Do you know if Vietnamese employers will accept a Canadian TESL license? I don't want to have to do both programs if I don't have to. Love your videos!
@ninja.teacher

Most English teaching certifications, such as TESL, TEFL, TESOL are accepted for work permit by the Vietnamese government. The quality of the course (and how much practicum it has) is what employers care about.
