I’m an ex-teacher. It’s not phones and other devices or “being raised by the internet.” It’s that students are allowed to refuse to do the work and get the same grade as someone who did the work. They are allowed to use devices in class instead of class work. There are rules against this but teachers who enforce them are overruled and punished by administrators. Students are allowed to cuss out teachers. They are allowed to spit on teachers. They are allowed to hit, kick, and bite teachers. They also are allowed to do this to other students if they have any sort of special education documentation like aggressive emotional issues. The bad behavior is common because it’s not only allowed, it’s often rewarded by administrators with candy, less work, and more free time. They do all these things including hitting teachers because they are allowed to. They have permission from the people running the schools.

Yours is the only post by a teacher I’ve ever seen that I agree with 100% based upon my experiences in four different types of schools over a period of 8 years. In other words, the only reason the kids act the way they do today is for the simple reason that they’re allowed to act that way. So teaching feels like a conspiracy between the kids and the administration to drive all of the teachers nuts and I mean that literally, not figuratively. I quit to go ship out with the merchant marine for 8 years then finally became a barber for the next 20 years after that. I also believe that the schools are doomed and need to be converted to online academy for all albeit on public schools property with child care workers. In other words the teachers should all be in television studios, there should be far fewer of them, and the ones they do hire should be well paid. Let the baby-sitters they hire worry about whether or not the little assholes are spazzing out. That should not be the concern of the academic instructor who ought to be able to do their job perfectly well from a television studio.

The system is failing teachers AND students. I quit in 2022 mid year and never looked back. I cried almost daily for 5 years of teaching middle and high school....it was misery. I felt so helpless to help students who needed so much more than I was able to give. My work day was chaotic and hostile from the time I arrived from the time I left every single day. I also worked in 4 different schools, both public and charter, in 5 years. Some are better than others but the same issues persisted in every single school. I got a job in student services at my local community college and I love it - I still get to work with high school students to help them get into college. I'm still doing what I loved but in a completely different dynamic and without having to deal with behavior issues and parents. I don't regret the time I spent as a teacher but I'm so glad I left - it's the best decision I have EVER made for myself. Period.

@@Maxmarvelus yes teachers are both part of the system as well as victims of the system. We are forced to participate and uphold a system that is deeply flawed in order to keep our jobs. I went into teaching fresh out of college wanting to change things and make a difference. But I quickly was bogged down with admin demands, unrealistic expectations, no support from teachers or admin and students with needs far beyond what I was capable of providing. One example in my career was 40 seventh graders in one classroom - over 10 of them with special needs. Many more with behavioral issues. There's no way I could help all of those kids and give them the environment they needed to succeed. The system set both my students and I up to fail.

I bartend during the day and I had an educator come in and order a Titos Tuesday who just quit her job. She used to be a principle for 14 years. She was brought into help get things back on track and was fought tooth and nail when she tried to get others to take accountability and fix the problems. Then she became the problem. She cares about these kids, and parents aren't involved while school boards don't give a damn.

@ACWhoCares2 It definitely stuck with me. My daughter's Spanish teacher told her she couldn't help her because she is only a part-time employee and she doesn't do extra time with students. Not even 10 mins to explain or clarify something. Then I found out this last semester that she is just now taking English and writing in the 10th grade. She is literally learning the difference between your and you're. She doesn't know what the subject and the predicate of a sentence are. And they grade on a curve. They were bringing back the Psat and Sat, but then the hurricane hit us in the mountains, and they were out of school for weeks again. The test hasn't changed. These kids are screwed. I can't homeschool. Somebody has to pay for everything. It seems like all I do now is try to counteract the BS she is/isn't learning in school. The repercussions of this will haunt Gen Z and Alpha for the rest of their lives. I work with some of the young adults, and there is no hope for 85% of them. They can't handle any manual labor or communicate with customers. I only have one left in high school. Thank God my son didn't have to go through all of this. Parents have to get more involved. I can admit I should have been more involved early on. That's the only way to keep accountability on educators, students, and other parents. It's a joint effort.

So - I know I’m gonna catch hate or uninformed vitriol here, but here’s what I see. Yes, I was born on the tail end of the Boomer generation. I watch this channel because I learn from all of the younger people. You’ve taught me quite a bit and I see things through your eyes often now. But - I was required to respond to teachers as yes ma’am, no ma’am and please and thank you. Disrespect was an immediate trip to principal. I don’t get to make it to his/her office on my own - I was walked to that office by the teacher. My parents were contacted and there were serious consequences at home. Nope - I wasn’t beaten. Between two reprimands from both parents, MAYBE a swat or two from mom (dad wouldn’t do so as he had girls and thought that was wrong for a man to do so) and severe restrictions for a month - I figured out disrespect is not acceptable. Here’s how it goes - my generation was not right many times - but fear of repercussions as a kid was there. If I had EVER treated ANYONE the way teachers are treated now … omgoodness. I know we have one parent households many times (I raised my son by myself), but teaching and controlling at home is the only way teachers stand a chance. My son is 39. He still says Yes Ma’am when my tone changes. This is NOT the fault of teachers or education. This is the result of slow changes and a breakdown of simple respect for others. Teachers - thank you for being brave enough to try - it sure as Heck wasn’t for the money. 🌷

When people are incredibly disrespectful to other people, it’s not because they aren’t scared enough. It’s because they are absolutely terrified and have nobody in their lives they can trust. Think about what many of these kids are going through. They have parents who look to institutions to take care of them and their children, and people who work for institutions who have no idea what to do. Everyone in the lives of many of these kids is looking to some entity that they don’t even have a personal relationship with to look out for them. How unsafe must that make kids feel? Essentially, there is no adult in the room, and by “adult”, I don’t mean an authority figure that dominates you into submission. I mean someone who is emotionally strong and confident in their ability to handle what life throws at them. Growing up, I looked at my parents like they could handle anything, because they were very strong, resilient people who cared for me deeply and never made me feel unsupported. It wasn’t until I was 38, and both my parents were long dead, that I realized I AM the adult in the room. Nobody is coming to save me or my kids. That said, I’ve always been much stronger than I’d given myself credit for. The majority of parents are not, and their children can tell, and it’s absolutely terrifying for them.

I really appreciate your comments throughout this video, but especially the part about teachers being blamed for student failure, rather than students (and parents) being held accountable. This is extremely accurate. I was a high school teacher for 10.5 years and this is precisely what sent me over the edge. The job became impossible because all of the expectations were on the teachers, but students were allowed to do less than nothing…and still pass! This led to increased disrespect, apathy, entitlement, and inability to perform at grade level. As a teacher, I tried to maintain the rigor & expectations of my class because I actually want students to be their best. Rather than this being celebrated, it was seen as an issue…all because they were required to do things in my class. How can students succeed if they aren’t held accountable for doing the things necessary to succeed?! And when they fail, how can you blame the teacher that was literally not allowed to do her job?! I would tell people that some things are in my control, and some are not. What’s in my control: lesson planning, efforts to build positive relationships, communication of complex materials, providing differentiated resources, providing useful feedback, etc. What’s not in my control: students actually caring about learning, students doing the work, students reviewing the plethora of resources I give to them, students attending my office hours, students reviewing my extensive feedback, parents supporting me at home, etc. I loved the art of teaching, but I hated being a teacher in today’s system. I will never go back.

When I was a teacher, I remember one year the bulk of my students didn't care about the material they were learning. No matter what I did, only a few students cared enough to pay attention and try their best. I remember talking to the principal about it and he was like, "You have to make them care." 🤦🏾‍♀️ How does that work? Adults can't even get other adults to care or be interested in things they have no interest in. I also remember one of the things that I learned from my therapist at the time is that I am not responsible for other people's behavior. That was shocking to hear because teachers are always blamed for their students' misbehavior.

It’s gotten so bad that the only way to save the sanity of the teachers and keep the schools open permanently would be to convert them all to brick & mortar online academy supervised in computer labs by child care workers and tutors. If any teachers are willing to be rehired as tutors then let them be tutors but the curriculum itself should be entirely automated so the tutors don’t have to prepare lessons, grade papers, or do any of that bureaucratic nonsense. And concomitantly, under such a regime it would make no difference whether or not the tutor was permanent or a substitute which is genius considering how many classrooms don’t have regular teachers today.

After 33 years of teaching I took early retirement at 53 because I couldn't make it not one more day. EVERTHING that EVERYONE said in this video was like they copied and pasted my experiences. Now I wake up at 9 am and look forward to every single day. I am so grateful for my pension, and I could NEVER go back to the classroom. There's no way anyone getting into the teaching profession in the past 5 years will ever be able to last the 30 years it would take for them to get a pension. I really feel empathy for anyone that is a teacher.

@nuhabashir7677 I used to have a note on my desk to myself to never under any circumstances. to touch the students or be alone with one. Touching means anything from a hug to a hand on the shoulder, breaking up a fight, or a high five. Sounds ridiculous but I know teachers who all found themselves under allegations and court behind those things. Don't let the kids get to you and accept that you can not control their behavior; count backwards 1-10 followed with taking deep breaths to keep from losing your cool or yelling. Set up a rewards and consequence system that you consistently without fail, follow faithfully and be patient for the system to work. Create the system of what the rewards and consequences for behaviors will be with your students. Consistently call all the parents monthly; those positive only calls are so appreciated by parents and gets them on your side when you have to call about something negative. Lastly GET IN THAT BED AND GET AT LEAST 7 HOURS OF SLEEP BEFORE WORK. All caps because it's that important. With proper rest, you will be in the best position to be patient and deal with all the BS. Good luck my friend! You are essential and society needs you!!

@nuhabashir7677 went completely a diff. direction. Became a commissioned officer in the mil. It allowed me to 'restart' ...or 'over-ride' my humanities degree into entry-level middle management and put me in real world leadership and responsibility situations that there's no way I would have got otherwise. Pulling a pension from it--still kinda young so I transitioned (from that experience) to Operations jobs that pay pretty dang good. After stuff I've done that was legit hard--it seems too easy for the pay. Not trying to flex, as the kids say... But nothing ventured--nothing game and I dove in hard. I took years of high tempo work in tough situations dealing with people, foreign governments, millions & millions of bucks, hard decisions--so now a job over 30, 70, 100+ people feels easy in comparison. You take that to an interview versus someone with an internship, or (no disrespect) or running a Walgreens--theyre like "OK, You're what we need to move the needle here... you've done it and can tell us how you did with specifics--not with theory." I'm gonna be done working before 55 bro, maybe earlier if I want. Great feeling and able to do stuff too. If you know what you want to switch to, I would say teach as much as you have to--but transition that to something else. It's just not realistic for someone to unF years of being "raised by wolves" littered through the system. That's a problem larger society needs to figure out. Maybe people leaving and letting the system fail might be what it takes for people to wake up and say--yeah... it does start at home and with strong social/family fabric, etc.

AWFUL of your principal to say that as you left early to have your baby. Education is the only profession where the contract gives you a certain amount of sick days, but you are penalized if you take more than 3!! WHAT?! They know how desperate this is, but they stay with it, saying it's hard on your colleagues when you're out. How about how hard it is on YOU to come in sick?! Disgusting.

I fear for what society is going to look like in the future. If students don’t respect teachers they will probably not respect anyone with authority. If they are not learning they will not be equipped for a paying career. What happens then? Not everyone can be a content creator and make a living at it. Children have to be parented and come to school ready to learn. It isn’t the teacher’s role to baby sit and discipline. I am a senior now, but I look back and can say I received a platinum grade public school education. It was rigorous, and students towed the line. You rarely heard about trouble.

I’m not a teacher but I do talk about intellectual topics like culture, history, and genetics on my socials. Having had the experiences I’ve had posting online, I do not blame these teachers AT ALL for quitting and taking care of themselves first. These kids are more interested in being validated than they are in learning. They think they know everything because “TikTok” told them, and when you correct them or disagree with them, they attack you. They lack proper reasoning skills, and have no respect for rationality or expertise. And the way they engage with intellectual topics is from their feelings and subjective opinions. They have no knowledge in what they are trying to discuss, but get offended when you let them know that they don’t know what they are talking about. And when they don’t have a valid argument, they insult you instead of recognising and accepting that there are things they don’t know. It’s exhausting dealing with them online, I can only imagine how exhausting it is dealing with them for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. So kuddos to the teachers that are leaving. It’s tough to make that decision when you genuinely care about your students, but, at the end of the day, these kids are not worth the trauma.

Now imagine being in the public school system with no knowledge or experience of classroom management and training in childhood education. That’s the situation of the “professionals” that they want to slot in to cover for the educators who are burning out. I’m an engineer with no teaching credentials who is just tutoring math to small groups. I don’t deal with as many behavioral problem as the classroom teachers but it’s frustrating dealing with kids who genuinely need psychological and academic interventions to overcome learning disabilities and problems at home, but some parents are either to busy, or even worst, ignorant and prideful to accept it. And it’s free ($0), for now. Today I proctored a quarterly exam with a student who didn’t even have breakfast this morning. She complained of being hungry during the exam and asked if I could bring her food for our next exam session 😔 my kids are the main reason I still show, up but the problems in the system are going to get worst and my position may not even be funded next year. After the holiday break we’ll have 17 more weeks to go until mid-May when our tutoring funding will run out and we’re done for the year. Yes, I am absolutely counting those weeks up to my last day.

!!! I live in France. I showed your comment to my French husband. He's been cautiously supportive of my (reluctant?) interest in relocating to southwestern NYS, including Allegany County, so that I could finish out my working life as a teacher. I'm aware of the cultural problems plaguing our educational system both from within and without; but is there anything at all you could add about the situation, in that part of the country, to help me navigate the mess? I'm equally satisfied in working with talented kids and left-behind kids, and I can even tolerate administrative overreach into my curricula, but only ONLY if I retain authority in matters of discipline. Is everything-out-there- everywhere just an inferno, or is there some possibility of picking&choosing an acceptable situation? Well, there's my question in a bottle sent to you across the ocean, for you to open or not. :) Either way, I respect what you've been through, and I'm glad you moved on.

"In Africa.....?" dude its a whole continent. Also African kids in school would NEVER DARE TRY to behave like kids in America. Discipline is approved in schools in Africa. Remember corporal punishments for late assignments, talking in class, or behaving badly? Other than pay, teachers in Africa do have to deal with half as much as American teachers go through from administration, students, and parents. Having your parents called to school because of behavioral issues what damn near a death sentence.😅

If you think teaching about the history of cultural genocide of native people in North America is activism, that displaying tolerance for others is wrong, or that providing sex-ed is immoral, then either complain to the government who made the curriculum, or take your kids out of school. You people who complain about "activist" teachers are genuinely delusional, thinking teacher's have any power over what they need to teach. I wish I could teach modern history from a more international perspective, and when I asked if i could add it to the curriculum, only to be yelled at and accused of attemping to undermine authority. The most political history class has been this year is the teacher bringing up that learning about bad things can help learn to prevent it in the future. I’m in a rich area, no teacher is trans-ing children, at most they use preferred names and make sure children don’t kill themselves. School is compulsory for kids in murica. A kid doesnt go to school, its breaking the law. Quit making school compulsory and the kids that want to go will go. The kids who dont want to go to school will find other things to do.
