Teaching my Siamese cat to give paw. (He's so clever!)

In this video I show you how easy it was to train Momo to give paw. Siamese cats are supposed to be very easy to train and Momo proved this outright. It took him only 5 days to understand and learn that giving paw resulted in a treat. I highly encourage others to try this with their cats, even if they aren't Siamese. Many people are under the assumption that cats can not be trained, I think Momo has proven that to be wrong.

Some cats aren't comfortable with their paws being touched. Try building up trust by stroking their paws when they sleep. For the training part, you can start with a touchless trick like "up" or "spin". I'm busy with the spin video. Hopefully, we will be able to put it up next week.

Just don’t do tricks that require any grabbing or holding of paws. By nature, they don’t want their paws touched (let alone held). High five amd , choosing which hand a perfect alternative. I trimmed my cats nails basically everyday as a kitten. I barely trimmed anything off, but it’s a Better method for me than trying to trim longer nails. I never really grabbed at my cats paws because I know they don’t like it. But my cat doesn’t really bat an eye if I touch, hold, pet his paws. He doesn’t like that he has to sit still when I trim his nails, but he doesn’t care if I do it. Now he’s just over a year and I trim a few different claws different days of the week because he’s so cooperative. But I still avoid ‘tricks’ that involve things cats inherently dislike such as, shake. At this point my Siamese cat does some tricks, but they’re really related to games he likes to play. I am doing things all the time to keep him stimulated. I cut out different patterns of holes in boxes so he can try and get toys out. I put different blankets or old sheets over different tunnels or stools or chairs and he hides And plays around in that for hours (especially if I play hide and seek). I literally spend no less than two hours a day engaging him in some sort of activities. As a result, his ‘tricks’ are really a consequence of games he enjoys.. Be creative. I am continuously finding great humor in what my cat enjoys doing rather than a few commands. As you’ll see by the video above, she and the cat are enjoying the interaction and that’s why it’s so cool. Anyone can have a cat that will unenthusiastically train their owner to give them treats. No point if your cat is miserable. But building interaction where both the cat and cat parent are having fun is what it is all about

i started with directionals, name recall, followed by wiggling a finger that they have to touch with a paw, then to flat hand, then to high 5. I have 3 babies and one has moved on to tricks like turning around and standing, the other two are stuck on finger the wiggle.

I'm going to try this with my seal point! She seems smart, but she might be to young and playful to get it. Or maybe it's better to train them younger? I've tried to leash train her for when I take her outside but she just stands there. I finally gave up and bought a covered pet stroller. I had her wearing cute dresses when she was 10 weeks old and she played and didnt seem to mind them at all. She grew xs and s and then when it was time to go up another size whw wouldn't move. She would just stand there for a minute the fall over🙄. So now I just dress her for a quick pic or if we go out in the stroller. This is my second seal point, she is actually a decendent of my first who I got in 2000 for my husband. Shaggy lived only to 13 and always seemed skittish. I also got a Himalayan Siamese in 2000 after my 20 year old siamese passed away. Kooky, my Himalayan, also passed at 20 this year. So I'm hoping Nefertiti, we call her TT, lives a long life like my other babies and actually makes it past 20. I have a feeling my 18 year old, half siamese is going to make it past 20. She is the last if our original bunch and still kicks ass and takes names! She hates cats and since the others have passed on, she finally sleeps and stays on the covered porch, which I'm so glad about it's much safer. She used to sleep in the woods even though we built her a house on the back porch since she didnt want to hang out with the others. We live in the country, she refuses to stay inside, and I think the reason why is she likes chasing other animals off her land. Her old ass cracks me up chasing the neighbors cat away. I've heard her make a growling sound I've never heard her make before when she chases it away. I always think its because she feels she waited all them years for the others to pass on to make it up to the front porch and doesn't want to lose her spot. 🤣🤣 She doesn't bother with the neighbors goose, ducks, or the wild turkeys I feed! But she walks the perimeter of our land every morning sniffing around to see if a cat has invaded her territory while she was sleeping I guess🤔🤣. It makes me sad that she never had a friend so I give her extra attention at night and try to get her to spend a few minutes a day with the new baby but she doesn't seem interested and usually walks off. Wow this got long...yikes, that's embarrassing. My longest post ever is about my cats😹.

I trained my new rescue black cat to give me his paw. I'm so surprised with how fast he has learned, it only took 4 days! I taught him to give paw with hand signals but during the process of learning to give me his paw, he also learned the voice command for sit! He's one of my only cats who learned his name straight away so I knew he was going to be a fast learner.

Wichien Maat here in Thailand are quite less active and more shy. I can make one gives a hand automatically in a couple of hours. I didn't mean to boast, if the cat is easily trained a lesson then that lesson tends to be forgotten very soon as well. So it more depends on the time you spend with teaching.

Leica my oriental shorthair learnt this without treats. Just giving extra pats on head when she did it. She loved to play fetch as kitten. Again she dudnt need treats. I could see her struggle to focus on fetching outside with birds chirping but she would manage to stay on task. Definitly got attitudes and brains of her siamese ancestors. She is slowing down now at nearly 14 due to arthritus but still shakes hands.

@@MomoSiamese Leica is not so food motivated but definitley trainable. I would get home from work and had to play with her for a few hours every day when she was a full on kitten lol. We had another oriental when I was a teenager and he was pretty clever, figured out window security catches and how to get out his cage. My mum bread siamese in the 70s so grew up around these beautiful intelligent breeds.

I have a question for those whose cats have lived a long time. Ok, my first siamese looked exactly like Momo but had a white spot on the left side of her nose, so I don't think she was full blooded. She lived to 20. The same year she died I got a Himalayan Siamese who also lived to 20. Now, the seal point we got the same year only lived to 13, but had arthritis and slowed down way before he finally died. A flame point siamese we had lived to at least 17 with one eye still catching small critters and sadly we had to put him to sleep. So do non full breed or domestic cats live longer than full bred cats? Maybe some mixing of blood might lead to longer life span? I'm not a breeder so I don't know how it works. Maybe it was just a coincidence, but I'm worried maybe I shouldn't have gotten a decendent of a cat that had the shortest life of any of my cats. I got a siamese from a breeder two months before I got this one and the poor kittie had FIP and only lived a few weeks. So I kinda went with a breeder that I knew from previous experience had healthy kittens, but I don't look forward to her later years if she ends up like our previous seal point. Her eyes are not crossed like the cat was that shes a decendent from. So hopefully the breeder got some new blood in there. Her personality is way different, she's playful and entertaining. Shaggy always seemed scared but luckily he connected with my Himalayan so he had a partner. He was never playful and seemed so serious. So I'm hoping since she seems so different that she's going to be healthier but they look exactly alike except for the crossed eyes he had.

We aren't breeders either and have no experience with full bred cats either, however I have heard that mixed breed cats live longer because they are more diverse genetically. Pure bred cats often develop problems because breeders struggle to get pure bred breeding pairs to introduce fresh genetics into their litters. In the "wild" or among mixed breed cats breeding happens between the "strongest" cats so the gene pool is a lot more mixed and much more diverse. I think that is probably why mix breeds will most often live longer than pure breds. In our cats I have found that unless they have an underlying illness or something else happens they all live well over 15 years. We really love Momo and we are very happy with how he is, I think he got the best parts of Siamese but also got some nice trends of whatever other breeds might be in him.

I think with cats it's important to play to their strength. We tried teaching the others to give paw too but they were very uncomfortable with their paws being touched so we let it be. If you really want them to learn, positive reinforcement is key. Make sure to give them lots of treats so they learn that their paw being held is a good thing.

My cats won't let me shake their paws unless they are laying down. They know spin and sit. Hopefully they learn paw lol
