Teaching Myself How to Build with Logs

I have always wanted to build myself a home using logs. The scribe fit handcrafted log cabins and homes are a thing of beauty in my eyes and I am going to be pursuing one for myself. It is an incredibly complicated craft but it fascinates me and I am going all in on it. I cut some logs to practice scribing and cutting notches and it turned out exceptionally well. Cant wait to see where all this takes us friends.
Welcome to Traplines and Inlines, this channel focuses on my dog and I on our remote Off the Grid Homestead in Northern Canada. I make videos on off grid homesteading and building, trapping, chickens, mechanical projects, and hunting and fishing.
I went offgrid and started building my cabin over two years ago, while I was still in highschool. Since then I have built many things at the homestead and have had the priviledge of learning many things along the way.
The homestead is designed to be relatively low maintenance and with extremely minimal expenses. All of my electricity comes from solar power, heat from woodstoves, and I haul all my water so I dont have any monthly costs associated with my homestead.
I love the lifestyle, especially because it gives me the absolute freedom to do whatever I please. I plan on continuing to tackle awesome projects and work at building and fixing many more things, and I cant wait to share them with you on the channel.
Thanks for watching!

I’m 56 and I’m telling you what you are learning can’t be bought at any college. Hands on is the way to go. You build a cabin the knowledge you gain will stay with you a lifetime and you can’t put a price on that. I have a friend who builds log homes in ohio and let me tell you to say he’s is doing what he loves to do is an understatement and the reward he his reaping is he is providing his family a very nice lifestyle.

Most important design on a cabin, make the roof overhang as wide as possible. This will shed water, snow, and even sunlight, thus saving you log wall maintenance over it’s lifetime.
@mikeratcliff3835
@mikeratcliff3835 Жыл бұрын
Ya, completely agree with that, build a ton of roof overhang into any building! Couple sheds I've built I did a 2 ft overhang on the roof and even with just painted osb sheathing and no siding has been holding up great for several years since it keeps the rain and snow from beating on the sides of it. Just as solid as when I built It, even the paint still looks good.

There's a saying by European timber frame carpenter for every 1/2 inch of overhang the building gets a year of life... I worked on lot of buildings that where 500 + year's old

Great job brother from another mother, just one tip from an old Tennessee sawmill man. When you cut trees for your cabin, try not to cut any trees that are leaning very much, they all end up bowing on you as they dry out because of the stress points from the lean. Best of luck, I truly relive my youth watching your channel, been with ya from the get-go!

Wow I never thought of that! Thanks. Just moved to Rogersville TN, bought a sawmill and am starting to mill my Timbers, it’s a totally different point of view on trees than the harvesting of trees for firewood.
@tennwalt
@tennwalt Жыл бұрын
@@likestobike1111 Yeah, I really haven't had a bandsaw mill that long myself, before I cut everything with a chainsaw mill and when I started cutting thinner boards on the bandsaw mill I noticed at the end of the cut (on trees that were leaning,) the board would jump up quite a bit and so I researched it and stopped cutting leaners. School of hard knocks is my teacher lol.

Save up some money and buy yourself a nice house that suits you in a location you like (with as big a down payment as you can afford). Use the bush property as a combination getaway space, video production environment, investment property. It would still be a great place to shoot your videos and continue your hobbies (between which there's already much overlap), but also when you're not in production it's a getaway space, bugout location, or even an AirBNB side income generator.

I can appreciate your wanting to do something big, but honestly my favorite parts of your channel are when you're showing off things like what you're cooking for dinner... how you arranged the furniture in the cabin... talkin' with the dog. I enjoy that aspect of it more than the project itself because for someone who lives in a city, it's fascinating to see how everyday life is different. One thing I've always wondered is how you shower in the winter? I know you've got the outdoor coleman travel shower thing, but are you really showering outside when it's snowing and freezing? Also, what happens if you have to use the bathroom in the middle of the night during winter? Do you have to get bundled up and arm yourself with the rifle just to trek all the way to the outhouse?

If you get your scarfs flatter, and then narrower at the top of the log you will end up with a better notch in the end. Your making a mix off almost a round notch and almost a saddle notch here. Saddle notches allow for settling and keep a better fit over time. Pretty impressive start at this point. If you can figure out how to pm me and want too, do it.

I would suggest a small limbing (top handle) saw, maybe battery or straight electric if not a gas one. Save a ton of gas and is more versatile on the fiddily work and can be more precise. Not to mention at the end of the day you won't have been hefting all the extra weight. Bars and chains are cheaper as well. The big saw will see plenty of work as well of course. Good idea to tackle a large project and give the channel some continuity. Been watching since you started and enjoying most of your content. I am not big on the trapping segments although I have done some myself. Keep up the good work.

In honor of Cougar: I have had 3 good dogs through 40 years of marriage. I lost 5 as a kid until marriage. I missed my first dog, a Chihuahua so much through life that I now have another Chihuahua. He is 7. So in sll I have had 8 great dogs in my life. I started with a dog on the farm outside Grande Prairie. Now I just took my Chihuahua on his nightly walk on the street sidewalk in South Florida among the giant condos. You can't get your dog back but you can offer another dog a lifestyle with you. Get a young one and share you life with him. The dog deserves it and will reward you greatly. Cougar will always be in your soul and because of these videos, in our lives too. All the best!

If I was up where you are I'd look into a cord wood home. You cut peel split it dryer down .put your insulated concrete and start laying your your 24 inch chucks all the way around then you roll out 16 inches of insulation then add the next layer. Google it. Put a big overhang on and treat your logs .lots warmer and lasts. 12 to 15 cord makes a big home. Look at it. Lots easier

19 here and spent the last year building log homes out in Alberta. Keep that attitude and you’ll have yourself a house in no time. A tip for your notches is to do a “rough notch” first before doing your final scribe. A rough notch should drop the log lower still keeping a good inch between the two logs in the lateral. When you do your final scribe you’ll find it was nicer because your scribers will be much more closed making it easier and it won’t be able to rock around since the log has two nice flat contact points at either end. Wish you luck my friend, I wish I was in your postion to be building my own house at this age.

Let me tell you bud, if you ever get the chance to go to the lower 48 states, you have to go check out Silver Dollar City amusement park in Branson Missouri. It's located in the Ozark mountains and is a vacation destination like none other. That place in the fall during the Arts and Crafts Festival is right up your alley. Going there is like stepping back in time 140 years ago when everybody made things for themselves and other people by hand. You can watch log cabin builders, woodcrafters, candle makers, blacksmiths, glass blowers, and many other tradesmen making everyday items the old school ways if front of your eyes even while they are dressed in clothing from the late 1800's time period. You can't take it all in without being there for several days. And it sits on top of a massive underground cave which you can tour that as well.
