TEACHING ON SKILLSHARE: Don't Make My Mistakes

I have been pretty close to getting kicked off of Skillshare as a teacher for a while now (after almost two years on the platform). Not because I am trying to do things wrong, but because I am busy and I forget to do a few simple things (like check the constantly changing Class Guidelines).
Teaching on Skillshare has been a great way to earn extra income for my business and family. It was quite a bit of work to set up, but now the earnings are pretty much passive income. Since niche websites are now mostly my main focus, Skillshare revenue feels like a really cool little bonus hitting my account each month.

Not to mention that I get WAY off my uploading schedule and then come back to find many things have changed, but only after I've tried to upload a new course.

Thank you for sharing this video. I was about to create one of the topics that were not permitted in the guidelines. I did go through the entire guideline, but I missed this part specifically. So glad I have come across your video.- it saved me so much time.

Now this is a useful video. No rambling, no complaining, just plain: hey, I did this wrong, there's a point you might possibly overlook, here let me show you. I really want to try my luck in creating a first skillshare course. And I don't doubt the skill (in drawing) that I want to teach, but rather not passing the guidlines or overlook an essential teaching component they want to have in their videos. It's tricky, it takes planning.... BRING IT ON! XD

That seems so shortsighted on their part to cut out most of STEM subjects. It's very important knowledge and skills to be exposed to. I understand their point about self promotion but to me it seems they are trying to rip off the work of the people who have actually made the time to make content following their crazy constraints.

Hi Emilia, maybe but I think Domestika has probably taken that arts and creative spot to an extent. I get they want better content but cutting whole subjects like engineering is odd.

No you don't have to be a premium student to be a teacher. I do think it's important take a few classes even just the free ones to better understand what works.

This my first time teaching on skillshare and my video just wont uploaded i follow the settingd they wanted did mp4, more than bitrate standards, Then it said "Failed to upload" it really piss me

I'm so glad I found this video. I'm a yoga teacher and massage therapist and was considering making yoga workshop videos for skillshare and possibly for massage too. Do you feel they will give me a strike for these as yoga falls under fitness in a way but still skills. Thanks, Greg

You can have jumps but I think the cuts need to be cleaner than what I was able to do.

Thanks for this very informative video. Do you think courses on how to start a nonprofit (file in your state and with the IRS), how to do a balance transfer on a credit card to pay off student loans, how to purchase crypto currency, how to get into college and graduate school (write a winning college personal statement, putting together a solid application, how to speak to department/program chairs) would be prohibited? I'm a little worried that the personal finance topics could receive a strike b/c the examples use specific apps so it might look like I am promoting a product. The other topics seem like they might be prohibited because they are too general?

OK. New KZbin policies, so you can only say, "My name's Emilia" at the beginning or exactly at the halfway point. Not at the end! 😁 Crazy list of category exclusions. Covers many that niche marketers would have sites about or want to produce a course on. While Udemy is seeing course creators move away cos of constant discounting, is Skillshare better? Avoiding platforms & marketing courses on your own site seems the way to go. Use all other platforms as a funnel/secondary income.

Nope you don't have to have premium. I think anyone can teach.

I have had two strikes, one for self publicity and one for lack of narration during a 2 minute section of an hour long course. Both were edited and are now published. I believe the strikes last for six months, not for ever. I left a few months without uploading to be on the safe side as I didn't want to loose my skillshare platform. Do you know if this is correct? Or do the strikes stay indefinitely?

You are right, they look at the six month period. The strikes don't go away but they have to be too many within the last six months. If it was three total I'd be gone...I've gotten four so far since I've been on the platform but spread out

Not in the past, though this could change. If you are worried about getting a strike I'd just email their teacher support folks and see if they can give you any additional guidance.

If one of my friend buys Skillshare subscription and watch all my classes , then will it be profitable for me ? I have more than 40 hrs of content. I know this is not the organic way as I am telling my friend to make sure to make all my classes. Will skillshare ban me for doing this ? What happen if my friend rewatch my class again ? Will it be suspicious to the Skillshare platform.

It's like anything online....the more time and effort you put in, the more you can earn. It's not easy by any means. But it is pretty passive once your course is done.

Sorry, 2nd comment... A question actually. Skillshare videos are short. Is it OK to have a 10 or 20 second music intro with class title at the beginning of each video? Or do you think it's better to dive straight into the class? It's OK if you don't know as I will soon find out if it OK or not 😉

I wouldn't do it for each video. I'd introduce the topic and then get on with it. People have short attention spans.
