Thankyou for saying to not give up. I am the parent of a special needs teen who was fast tracked thru school and was made to memorize words without understanding. After 3 years of homeschooling and focusing on phonetic learning my teen read her first book both print and braille!

Having coached sped reading classes for 7 years, I so appreciate this video. The blending piece is key for our students. We taught our students to “sing” the sounds when blending. It was so helpful.

As a new special educator, I’ve been so frustrated by my county’s expectations and application of literacy for students with disabilities. My kids currently cannot read and ARE NOT EXPECTED to read. It infuriates me! I have decided that my students will no longer be held to my county’s stupid understanding of their potential. I am focusing on phonemic awareness for my kids this year. Thank you for this video. I’m so tired of being told your kids don’t need to read- THEY DO! And most importantly they can.

Thank you so much for this!!!!!! This is where I am right now with my granddaughter who has so much potential, I am at a lost for words at how society has just labeled our kids and have put them in a box! I will not accept this and is currently teaching my granddaughter basic phonic sounds and word blending, but I know that this is not enough. I know that there are other tools and resources that I need in order to teach her how to read, but I just don't know where to find it; I would love any additional information that you can provide. Again thank you so much for being a voice for our children.

@callieb4141 those babies can read, trick is no one takes the time to help them learn phonics. I have learned a child they claim Couldn’t read simply learns differently from everyone else. Don’t let no one label your kids saying they can’t read they can, the whole scenario is what way do they learn best, do they need a smaller classroom, or do they need more time on the material.

I just read the same book - so incredible - love the idea that no one is too anything to learn to read. I really appreciate your channel and your overall positivity. I’m a veteran educator - returning to the classroom after doing admin for a while and I connect so much with your videos and generally outlook. Thank you!

I love this video and it is right on time. I'm a 9 year SPED teacher and looking for more ways to help support my kids in Reading. Often times they are identified as needing decoding or additional support but overlooked because they have IEPs. Thank you for the information 😊

I’ve been using the S.P.I.R.E reading curriculum this year, it is FREE right now!! It’s an Orton Gillingham approach. I had really been struggling with trying to implement the research of the science of reading into my classes when we aren’t provided the explicit and direct instruction materials out kids need.

I'm not a special ed teacher, but I do teach ELA so this video is relevant to me. When you said at a certain point we give up on students and their ability on reading it resonated with me. Although our curriculum doesn't require a whole lot of reading, I am determined to implementing more of it this year (even with all the roadblocks we will have to deal with). Thank you for such a thoughtful video, friend. ❤️

I believe that our school system do give the things needed for our special needs kids and also mental health our schools are failing our kids we as Educators that have the love will put in the extra need for our kids that they need and make it happen with less pay less support and more work

I’m not a teacher however I’ve noticed my son can understand books by matching word with image. Only words. I haven’t taught him anything about prepositions or nouns but when I read a book to him with interesting images he learns the whole book word by word which leads him to learn the meaning of the word just by seeing it. ? Does that makes sense ?
