Teaching Your Dog a Focused Heel: Step 2

In this video, we will cover the second step to teaching a focused heel, also known as the backwards follow exercise. Building on the first step, we will work on getting your dog to walk towards you and center while maintaining eye contact. We will show you how to use positive reinforcement techniques to encourage your dog to stay focused on you and follow your movements. By the end of this step, your dog should be able to walk towards you, maintain eye contact and attention.

FYI these techniques work on my Corgi mix. You do not have to have a working breed. Sometimes luring and rewarding is a little more difficult with a smaller dog, but it works. My little guy amazes me everyday.

Corgis ARE technically a working breed. They’re herders, much like Rottweilers, Belgian Shepherds, Aussies, and Border Collies. There’s even a new breed called a Lancashire Heeler (created from the Corgi)! Just a fun fact :D

I've been trying this. Is it normal for Tizzy to step on my toes as I lure her toward me? Or am I not getting the mechanics correct. She steps on me enough to make it feel clumsy. Thanks! Great vids!

Thanks! You can try standing a little wider or reward slightly away from your body, so your dog doesn't get close enough to stand on your feet. Cheers!

I have a 22 month old standard Labradoodle. She heels pretty nicely forward, back up and side step. But often when I give her a treat (for any training) she has to stop to chew and swallow it. They are tiny and she is not a small dog. I have tried many and don't see the eagerness and quick swallowing that I see your dogs do. Is there a real enticing treat that goes down quickly that I should be trying. It seems silly, but I have been experimenting since she was a puppy. It is a big problem doing the Center moves also. She can't keep her head up because she is busy chewing and eating. Even tiny training treats get cut to a smaller size.

Positive only training is ridiculous. You have to spend 3 videos explaining the strenuous steps that require incredibly skilled precision that first time dog owners would never have. You can teach a dog to do this with just 15 mins of corrective leash pressure, which is incredibly intuitive and especially helpful for those trainers who don’t have the experience of forming a relationship with a dog yet.
